Discussion I think one of the Zeta set designs was very much "inspired" by one of mine from earlier this year...

I made a series of proxy bundles based on classic painters earlier this year, one of which was an Artemisia Gentileschi's bundle that included a "Judith Beheading Holofernes" for a 'Go For The Throat' proxy. And saw this morning that the Zeta set used the same Gentileschi painting for the same card lol.

And to be clear, I just think it's funny - we both used public domain art. Although mine was done as an homage which overtly credits Gentileschi.

I already thought this set was pretty lazy, this was just the cherry on top.

Discussion The Hobbit may be the biggest disappointment of the last years

I mean, there have been sets were i expected nothing and ended being decent (OTJ), sets i expected to suck... and sucked (marvel, tmnt, spiderman), and sets that i expected to be good and effectively, were good.

The hobbit is the one set i expected to be good and ended being... not great.

Inflated prices, low power except some idiotically good chase cards, the terrible one ring reprint, short set, not great in limited, the insistence in a terrible mechanic (amass), the focus on minor tribes without enough support before... while still not giving them enough support to actually make them attractive.

I know opening packs is not wise per se, but in this set is has beenspecially bad, because other than the 5 chase cards there was effectively nothing i would use in a deck. So if you didn't hit something of monetary value, you couldn't even get excited over it maybe being a good fit in X or Y commander deck.

I am the only one very disappointed?

Commander / EDH Could I build a Cat Creature based deck

Thumbnail gallery

Is this possible?

I really would like to build a deck around cat creatures though I have some concerns. I’m not sure what my commander would be I’m thinking maybe Gavi, Nest Warden as my commander, but I don’t know where I’d go from there…as I’d more so be picking her so I can include the cards pictured above…

The two cards pictured, inspired me to do it plus I love cats. I’m open to making it more cat and dog based creature deck but making a pure cat one has my heart.

Any suggestions?

I Have a Question / I need Help Can a deck be constructed out of these cards?

I am very new to mtg and all i have are these cards and the draconic destruction precon. Recently some of my friends got interested in the game but deemed it too expensive to buy their own decks. Could this random assortment of cards make any sort of playable deck so we can all learn how to play?

Rules Question Captain America, First Avenger questions

Thumbnail gallery

I last played in shop tournies in 2019. Ive been out of the loop for awhile, so I just wanted to triple check some interacts here for a deck Im proxying to play with friends.

Captain America's throw ability says that *he* assigns the damage, not the equipment. That means this ability does commander damage, correct? And because he's the source of the damage, anything modifying how he applies damage applies here as well, right? So Mjolnir will double the damage, so Equipment Cost x2. If GE is equipped, it applies infect. If SoK is equipped, the creature is exiled even if damage wasn't enough to kill. Etc. Am I correct in this assumption?

Also, does that mean that Grafted Exoskeleton + Excalibur on Cap is just a kill combo? Throw to kill, move to combat swinging at weakest player, throw to kill the last one. Seems stupid busted if so

Edit: Throw doesn't do commander damage, got it

I Have a Question / I need Help How many new cards does WOTC add to a new set of each rarity?

I want to make a custom set of MTG cards, but I don’t know WOTC’s policy on new cards per set. Like, what’s the ratio of rarity for those sets and how many new cards of each rarity do they add?

I’ve made custom commander decks before (commander decks have 10 new cards (including commander and alt-commander) and 90 existing ones, but standard-legal sets are new to me.

Can anyone give me details on how I would go about this? It’s been my dream to make a custom set for a while, and I really want to know how WOTC does it. I have the world and everything already pre-made, I just need to know their process for making sets.

Edit: For context, this set would be a Universes Within set with a focus on fleshing out the four-color combos. Working with others to figure out how to make that draftable, but ideally I want this to be as accurate as possible while also being fun.

I Have a Question / I need Help FF Booster Box

I bought Final Fantasy player booster box tailored for a draft when it was released....

Had no chance to give it a shot yet and now I'm wondering whether to keep as "an investment" so to try to sell it in the future. I checked the current prices but it doesnt seem to have gone up in any meaningful way.

Would you keep it or just organize a draft? - in which case id be tempted to build some jumpstart pack from the contents for future replayability :)

Rules Question how do these three cards interact?

Thumbnail gallery

like obviously this isn’t efficient or optimized but let’s say you got a token of a “forest elf creature” and than used Rhys the Redeemed ability to copy it. What happens when Ambush Commander leaves play? Would the Token revert to a forest since that’s what it originally copied or stay as an Elf creature forest

Pretty new to both Magic and Warhammer and i specifically want the necron & tyranid decks. But the problem is of course the insane asking costs. Is there an alternative way to getting them for anything reasonable than what's on the front page of google?

I Have a Question / I need Help Does anyone know what this card is?

Post image

Hopefully reddit freaking works and shows the picture this time.

I got this card from an ebay order, i have no idea what it is and cannot get the MTG companion app to translate it for me, it is a 1 generic 1 green mana 5/4 with the number 121/ 275 C followed by the letters STX JP with the artist ilse gort and is dated for 2021. The image on the card looks like a moss covered bear or wolf snarling and coming out of some water in what looks like a swamp. Is there anyone who can figure out what card this is for me?

EDIT: Geez, its been less than 4 minutes lol. Thank you everyone, problem solved i appreciate the help!

I Have a Question / I need Help Beginner wanting to play with Avatar The Last Airbender cards

Hey! I want to get into MTG, and my friend who is introducing me told me to get a pre con commander deck. I absolutely love ATLA and would love to start with that collection, but have discovered that they didn’t make pre con ATLA decks for some reason. What’s my best course of action? Would really love to stick with the ATLA cards if it’s not unreasonably expensive

Commander / EDH Is my Yawgmoth deck too strong for br2-lowBr3?

I was building a Yawgmoth deck for reward games at our local LGS, and while I was building it, the synergies were getting so strong that I started to wonder if I had built too strong a deck for these types of games.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, and thanks in advance for your answers.

Decklist:

https://moxfield.com/decks/0fgw8T0hNESGRBFyTQNf-A

Editing after some comments:
Braids is removed from the deck when playing BR2; it's purely a flavorful card, just for fun. Instead, there's a sidedeck card.

The thing is, people come to us (our LGS) with decks at BR4, but with BR2-compatible rules. One plays Najeela, another uses full control of opponents. A third uses Asmodeka... that shitty commander you can only cast after discarding. He deals billions of damage while not shying away from using Deflecting Swat and Lotus Petal, which cost more than some decks. They don't spare anyone there.

Discussion Should I Keep Counter Intelligence Stock or Upgrade It? Is It Strong Out of the Box?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I recently got the Counter Intelligence precon and I'm wondering if it's worth keeping mostly stock or if it really needs upgrades to perform well.

I've read some feedback saying that the deck can be pretty slow out of the box, especially compared to other precons. I haven't played it enough yet to know if that's actually a problem.

For those who have played Counter Intelligence:

- Is it strong enough straight out of the box?

- Does it feel too slow in a typical Commander pod?

- Which cards would you recommend cutting first?

- What are the must-have upgrades to make it faster/more consistent?

- Would you personally keep it mostly stock, or upgrade it significantly?

Custom Card / Alter Custom Sleeves Art

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi, idk if this is the right place to post this but I wanted some info on custom sleeves art and I saw some posts on this community.

What's the best seller? Many say Dragonshield but I also saw on aliexpress a couple of seller a little cheaper.

My main problem is that I want to make a foil effect on it and I have a border that I want to stay foil, on DragonShield I saw they can make it with white/black border.

On Aliexpress there is a seller that make 50/60/70 bulk and can add various effect, but I don't trust it 100%

Does someone has bought off aliexpress? Or has another seller? Someone cheaper maybe?

The art comes from a new card game very similar to Magic, KartomantiK, hope this doen't break the rule

Discussion The meaning of the Zeta set is that you shouldn't buy it

And that idea feels like the only reason you reasonably would.

I was unfamiliar with MSCHF before this Secret Lair was announced, and after looking into their work I came away with an interpretation of the drop that I haven't seen discussed. Specifically after coming across their "Boosted Packs" series, which stands as a direct commentary to exactly what they've collaborated with Wizards on with this Secret Lair.

Upon browsing their previous works, it seems to me that MSCHFs artistic work is often very directly about the structures of capitalism and consumerism, and more specifically how the internet has driven these systems to evolve into something quite bizarre. Their collaboration with Wizards is an opportunity to communicate those ideas through one of the very companies their work tends to critique.

The drop itself is the work of art: a commentary on modern TCG culture and what it has become in 2026. It poses as a celebration of Magic's origins, (which cost the creators nothing aside from the paper used to print the test cards) while selling that experience back to the players at a premium price. It's no surprise that the product itself isn't sold as a self contained, playable set, but as micro-packs similar to Aftermath Boosters, an iteration of Magic that was universally rejected by the player base.

The contrast of the early design language (where the imagery was an afterthought or an inside joke) packaged in a modern distribution method (a limited drop at a premium price that is bound to sell out) makes these ideas even more pronounced. What Magic was and what it has become is on full display. The drop questions what makes cardboard worth the money we spend on it, and questions further if we even should, given the current economic landscape where everything seems to integrate some form of gambling.

I was planning on skipping the drop, due to the drama of randomized packs coming to Secret Lair. But the more I reflected on these ideas the more I wanted to participate in the experience MSCHF had created. Not for the cards themselves but to appreciate how they creatively explore the themes of modern cardboard consumerism.

I'm sure there won't be any left by the time I reach checkout tomorrow. Which, even that, seems to be part of experience. So at least I still get to "participate".

Discussion Has anyone tried using turn timers?

I've been reflecting lately on what makes magic fun or not, and when I look at the games I've played that haven't been fun for myself or others, the main reason I'm coming back to is turn length. Long turns lead to bored people.

Has anyone ever experimented with using a turn timer? I'm thinking someting tappable like they use in speed chess, where they could tap when their turn starts and then tap to pause during things like when they pass priority and are waiting for repsonses.

Also, what do you all think would be a reasonable time to set for turns? I don't want to make the game stressful. I was thinking maybe 5 minutes?

Thanks for the input!

I swapped out Flicker for Daydream in my Pantz deck, seems like a no-brainer. I imagine daydream would destroy flicker’s value, but it doesn’t. Am I missing something?

Edit: What I missed was READING THE CARD. Thanks everyone. Here’s my deck list if interested: https://moxfield.com/decks/lqdn-32zTkue0SjYAYy9-g
