Discussion The meaning of the Zeta set is that you shouldn't buy it

And that idea feels like the only reason you reasonably would.

I was unfamiliar with MSCHF before this Secret Lair was announced, and after looking into their work I came away with an interpretation of the drop that I haven't seen discussed. Specifically after coming across their "Boosted Packs" series, which stands as a direct commentary to exactly what they've collaborated with Wizards on with this Secret Lair.

Upon browsing their previous works, it seems to me that MSCHFs artistic work is often very directly about the structures of capitalism and consumerism, and more specifically how the internet has driven these systems to evolve into something quite bizarre. Their collaboration with Wizards is an opportunity to communicate those ideas through one of the very companies their work tends to critique.

The drop itself is the work of art: a commentary on modern TCG culture and what it has become in 2026. It poses as a celebration of Magic's origins, (which cost the creators nothing aside from the paper used to print the test cards) while selling that experience back to the players at a premium price. It's no surprise that the product itself isn't sold as a self contained, playable set, but as micro-packs similar to Aftermath Boosters, an iteration of Magic that was universally rejected by the player base.

The contrast of the early design language (where the imagery was an afterthought or an inside joke) packaged in a modern distribution method (a limited drop at a premium price that is bound to sell out) makes these ideas even more pronounced. What Magic was and what it has become is on full display. The drop questions what makes cardboard worth the money we spend on it, and questions further if we even should, given the current economic landscape where everything seems to integrate some form of gambling.

I was planning on skipping the drop, due to the drama of randomized packs coming to Secret Lair. But the more I reflected on these ideas the more I wanted to participate in the experience MSCHF had created. Not for the cards themselves but to appreciate how they creatively explore the themes of modern cardboard consumerism.

I'm sure there won't be any left by the time I reach checkout tomorrow. Which, even that, seems to be part of experience. So at least I still get to "participate".

I swapped out Flicker for Daydream in my Pantz deck, seems like a no-brainer. I imagine daydream would destroy flicker’s value, but it doesn’t. Am I missing something?

Edit: What I missed was READING THE CARD. Thanks everyone. Here’s my deck list if interested: https://moxfield.com/decks/lqdn-32zTkue0SjYAYy9-g

Rules Question Does Princess Yue work with clones how I think she does?

Thumbnail gallery
173 Upvotes

If I have Princess Yue on the battlefield and I play a copy creature like [[Clone]] it could enter as a copy of her and then the Legend Rule would put one of them into the graveyard. If I put the clone into the graveyard it would trigger her ability to return to the battlefield as a land named Moon that gains the ability to tap for colorless. But since it can enter as a copy of any creature on the battlefield it would return as a copy of something (applied on layer 1), is named Moon overriding it's previous name (applied layer 3), is a land overriding it's previous types (applied layer 4) and gains T: add {C} without losing any of the abilities of what it copied (applied layer 6).

Rules Question Question about a card

So I played a game of commander with a friend and I was using the Family Matters Bloomburrow Pre-Con deck.

At one point I equipped this artifact with my commander but my opponent took control of my commander. What happens to the equipment? We decided it was unequipped since I still owned and controlled the artifact. Or would it have stayed equipped and triggered at the beginning of combat and gave them a copy of my commander?

Went to Walmart to see what the Hobbit scene was like, not having bought any of this set yet. Every single box was open with the promo missing. I brought the entire box to customer service and he hid them away. He caught up to me with one box that still has the promo and said he’d sell it to me 20% off since it’s “damaged” so I happily took it, and the magic gods blessed me for doing the right thing!

Word on the street is that touching the Goblin War Chief before a battle gives you luck...

however this is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN during his nap time!

Luckily, goblins lack both a sense of literacy and personal space.

Discussion Sometimes I hate not having a regular group to play with

Upvotes

So unfortunately only 5 people showed up to my game store so we had only one large pod.

This one guy acts friendly enough; we will call him Steve. One of the 5 players was a brand new guy. Steve begins by welcoming him and then grilling the new guy about what decks he brought and educating him on “power levels” and stating how everyone tries to match power (fair enough). Steve then goes on to add “my deck is a bracket 3 borderline 4; it only has one game change, ‘Gaea’s Cradle’ because I had an extra.” That immediately triggered a red flag. But fuck it. I want to play Magic and I only have randoms to play with and one day a week to play.

Anyway, the game starts and Steve is playing elves. Also to note, my LGS does some little commander league thing where they do achievements for special in game actions and basically you can get bragging rights for earning the most points, sort of like a leader board thing. I don’t care about that. I like making cool theme decks; I was playing my brand new Aphelia deck. I usually never win and couldn’t care honestly. For Steve. Winning means fucking everything.

We start playing and as expected, he immediately starts ramping like crazy (turn one Sol Ring; Llannowar Elves, etc). Me with my little snakes sees the threat (no other players had anything meaningful on board) and attack Steve. Immediately Steve gets pissed. “He is attacking me for some reason,” he says, audibly annoyed. He then grabs my commander and thoroughly tries to understand what my commander does. Keep in mind, it’s a 1/2 death touch and no manna to activate her ability. He begrudgingly accepts his 1 point of commander damage and moves on. Unfortunately I get mana fucked and don’t get to do anything half the game. Most players are taking like 2-3 minute turned while Steve is taking 5 minutes plus playing solitaire with land drops and shit. Before you know it, Steve has an entire board state full of tokens and elves that fucking quadruple mana (hyperbole, of course) and for some reason the other players just decide to attack the Izzet player with one fucking creature on the board because “He is the one causing me to take 2 damage every turn” like what? 😂 Of course Steve ends up stomping everyone in the game and questioning every single players cards and effects as if he is a fucking judge.

Bonus funny moment. I attacked him with a Changling Outcast because no one else could or would attack him and at that point I was just kinda trolling. He literally considered killing with a spell 😂. Like dude. 1 damage. You will be fine.

God, I wish I had fun people to play with who could laugh and enjoy the game

I Have a Question / I need Help A Sculptures-only Deck?

Post image
17 Upvotes

A Sculptures-only Deck?

“Sculptures have power & toughness that are equal to the number of Sculptures you control”

Goal:
A Sculpture, artifact creature token / tribal deck - try to go wide and tall as possible!

Key Creature:
“Doomed Artisan” - Sculptures you control can’t attack or block. At the beginning of your end step, create a colorless Sculpture artifact creature token with “This token’s power and toughness are each equal to the number of Sculptures you control.”
(To my knowledge, this is the only card in MTG that generates Sculpture tokens. Please correct me if I’m wrong.)

This poses some issues:
1) In order for the Sculpture engine to work, Doomed Artisan needs to be tutored, protected, and have recursion possibilities, etc. Because if they go to the graveyard, the sculpture engine shuts down. (Might be good as a secret commander?)
2) Doomed Artisan needs to be flickered, blinked, or bounced before Combat phase - so that the Sculptures can be “unlocked” to attack or block. But needs to be able to return to generate more sculptures.
3) Once per turn (or End phase) is not ideal/is slow/is clunky. So we need ways to copy, multiply, or populate them.

Token Multipliers (or anything with Keyword: Populate):
• Mondrak, Glory Dominus (Creature - 2x tokens)
• Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation (Creature - 3x tokens)
• Adrix and Nev, Twincasters (Creature - 2x tokens)
• Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage (Creature - pay 4 mana to a copy of a token)
• Doubling Season (Enchantment - 2x tokens)
• Parallel Lives (Enchantment - 2x tokens)
• Primal Vigor (Enchantment - 2x tokens and 2x counters)
• Second Harvest (Instant - 2x tokens)
• Parallel Evolution (Sorcery - 2x tokens)

Ways to copy Creatures, or Token Multiplying affects, for more Sculpture pumping (Like Ojer Taq, Mondrak, etc.):
• Bramble Sovereign (Creature - pay 2 mana to make a copy token)
• Cackling Counterpart (Instant)
• Rite of Replication (Sorcery)
• Mirrorweave (Instant)
• Spark Double (Creature)

Ways to blink/flicker, the Doomed Artisan:
• Roon of the Hidden Realm (Creature - pay 2 mana and flicker)
• Brago, King Eternal (Creature - has to attack to flicker)
• Venser, the Sojourner (Planeswalker - charge up 2 to flicker)
• The Eternal Wanderer (Planeswalker - charge up 1 to flicker)
• Flickerwisp (Creature - ETB flicker)
• Charming Prince (Creature - ETB flicker)

Protection:
• Final Showdown (Instant - pay 3 mana for indestructible)
• Teferi’s Protection (Instant - pay 3 phase out and not lose)
• Guardian of Faith (Creature - ETB phase out)
• Selfless Spirit (Creature - sac for indestructible)

Possible “Statues” to include (although, I want to stick to the “Sculptures” theme):
Levitating Statue
Ancestral Statue

Instants:
Ephemerate
Eerie interlude
Momentary Blink
Rootborn Defenses
Cloudshift
Clever Concealment
Ghostway

Sorcery:
Wake the Reflections (populate)

Enchantments:
Anointed Procession
Astral Slide
Teleportation Circle
Song of the Worldsoul (whenever you cast a spell, populate)
Growing Ranks
Cathar's Crusade (to double counters)

Artifacts:
Sculpting Steel
Prototype Portal
Roaming Throne (double abilities - like that of Doomed Artisan)
Conjurer’s Closet

It’s very much just an idea at this point- need help with building the “99”. It would be a very niche, very casual deck - probably bracket two. But I like the concept of killing opponents by inanimate objects.
What would you include? Exclude?
Any better or more efficient ways/combos you’d suggest for this deck?
How would you build this or “fix” it?
Just curious, just for fun 🙂

Discussion Cute and easy decks to get wife interested in learning MTG

Sup y'all. I played magic growing up, but haven't been able to find anyone to play with in adulthood. None of my childhood friends I played with live near me. I have a 1.5 year old kid so I can't leave the house much to go play at card shops. I taught my wife how to play Pokemon a few years ago, which has been fun, but gets boring after a while because the game mechanics feel very repetitive. I recently started playing MTG arena, which made me miss playing the game with actual cards. I've tried to get my wife interested, but she says the cards are "scary and weird" unlike the cute Pokemon. She also doesn't like games that have a ton of rules (AKA the Scarlett Johansson crying meme). I think my best bet for getting her interested is to use some decks with cute non-scary creatures and basic spells/mechanics. I was wondering if anyone has any cheap deck lists I could order via singles online that would work well for this. My old collection is buried somewhere in my parent's basement, so I'd rather just start fresh and also don't have time to sort through thousands of cards. Also if anyone has succeeded in teaching their partner magic in a similar situation I would appreciate any tips. Thanks!

I Have a Question / I need Help Looking to get into MTG as a surprise for my fiancé. Can someone explain the game to me like I know nothing?

I barely know anything about mtg. I know it's a fantasy card game based on luck and skill, and I've played once with my fiance but I was so confused. Can someone explain the game? He was throwing around facts like "I have a flying type and he can't dodge" and stuff like that. I'm just so lost but I want to learn it for him.

Discussion Trying to settle a debate on bracket 3 interpretation, please help!

Post image
768 Upvotes

So I play in a pod of 4. We usually play pretty high interaction, higher power, and quicker bracket 3 games. Imagine if you will a game with lower interaction though.

Player 1 likes infinites. Has no problem going infinite almost every game on turn 7 and winning.

Player 2 like burn. Has no problem burning the table out by turn 7 and winning.

Player 3 likes mill. Has no problem milling the table out by turn 7 and winning.

Player 4 likes voltron, annihilator, single target infect, and cards like surprise blighsteels on turn 4 or 5.

Some people in the pod believe that player 4 is playing unfair. Basically that they should start killing players on maybe 6, but more than likely 7.

Some people think that to be able to compete with other mass damage decks and have a fair chance at winning on turn 7, they should likely be able to be SINGLE PLAYER lethal by turn 4-5.

Which group is correct? EDIT: as is, is player 4 playing incorrectly or “bracket 4”?
