General Question / Discussion My mum is afraid of snakes

And y'know what? That's fine! She doesn't have to be near snakes in real life! But she used to freak out at snakes on the internet too... Which isn't fine. Don't ask me why. It's autism not reasonism.

Anyway I've taken it upon myself to send her overwhelming cute snek content.

My lovely mother watches all of it. She can even tell a legless lizard apart from a snake now.

Anyway... Do you have any cute snek content to share?

Pet Snake Questions trying to pick what snake I'll be getting in the future, do all of these species seem suitable for a beginner and are the enclosure estimations accurate?

Post image
3 Upvotes

i've liked snakes for a long time, they're my favorite animal overall, and over the years i've slowly worked on a list of snakes that appeal to me the most while not being unrealistic for someone who has never owned snakes.

unfortunately, it's kind of difficult to narrow it down to just one species, as i'm really not that picky, nor do i know if i'll be able to provide a large enclosure for a snake when i get one (i'll only be getting one after moving, and i'm not fully sure if where i'm moving will have the room for larger enclosures, yet). initial cost isn't as much of a concern.

i'm hoping my research has been accurate, and these species' enclosure sizes + their beginner-friendliness aren't wrong, but that's why im asking here lol. it can be pretty difficult to weed out misinformation about pet snakes from what i've noticed, especially when it comes to realistic size estimations.

Pet Snake Questions pet milk snake stuck to tape used:(

Post image

I need help with info about what to do to save my snake. This morning I woke up to my pet milk snake wrapped around his thermometer, so I took it out to see his neck and body was sticking to the velcro tape I used for the thermometer. I immediately grabbed a q tip dipped it in an olive oil/water solution and tried to ease him off of the tape. After about 5 minutes he was still stuck pretty good. He pooped all over me and i cleaned that off. My mom suggested I used a drop of goo gone but I knew that this was a bad idea since goo gone is so potent but it was the only thing I had left to try in that moment and I figured it was better than pulling him off and potentially ripping off scales. After a bit of watered down good gone on the q tip, he came off and didn’t have any tipped scales. I immediately took him to my sink and filled it with like warm water solution soak him in. I then put some dawn dish soap to rinse off the left over goo gone for about 5-7 minutes. he’s now in a new cage with paper towels and I super worried about him.

General Question / Discussion Cmv: live feeding is cruel and unnecessary

People who feed their pet snake with small alive vertebrates ( often rats or mice) do it probably out of sadism as it's not necessary at all. Most pet snakes( or lizards) will definitely eat dead frozen mice. No need to throw an alive mouse in their cage. If the snake refuse to eat a dead frozen mouse, u just have to heat up the dead mouse and make it moves with chopsticks in front of the snake. Like that, the snake will belive the prey is alive and will strick it. Now if the person tried everything and the snake still refuse to eat dead preys, than I have no choice but to agree that its "ok" to give it alive animals. In general live feeding is just cruel and should only be done as a last resort . Some snakes ( or even other reptiles) can definitely be extremely picky and refuse everything thats not alive . However thats far from the majority. The vast majority of reptiles have no problem eating pre-frozen mice.Predation happens in nature, thats true but in nature the prey animal has a chance to escape because it is not locked in a cage. Not to forget that bunnies, mice, rats have sharp theets and claws. They will definitely fight back if they can and have no other choice and can Injure the snake ( sometimes fatally). Conclusion: if u have a carnivorous pet, just give it dead animals.Way less dangerous for ur carnivorous pet as dead prey dont fight back wile being eaten. Also way less cruel for the prey animal.

Pet Snake Questions Are corn snakes chill? Also am I wrong for looking for a rosy boa?

I’ve been doing some research for the better part of six months looking for a rosy boa locally. Research seemed to tell me it was the best option for me. Disposition of a bp without the size. But every time I brought it up to non rosy breeders at my last reptile expo wondering if anyone sold them they just kept putting me down and telling me “not to believe everything I read on the internet.” And kept trying to sell me corn or king snakes. So like, how are corn snakes? Are they also pretty chill in your experience? Internet seems to me like they’re a bit more active. I kinda just want a friend I can take out and hang with (obviously for short amounts of time and on their terms).I made up a tank and everything for a rosy so I’m kinda disheartened at the prospect but I just really want a snake friend. Sorry for the ranty-ness I’m not very good with my words lol

I'm looking to get a new exotic pet and ended up choosing snakes, I'm a fishkeeper for 2 years and have really been into exotic pets. I just love how cool and unique they are from other common pets. I'm looking to get maybe a ball python right now and have been looking for shops that I can got one.I am open for recommendations for beginners tho. If you have anything to share like enclosure requirements, feeding, cleaning, or other products I might need before getting one please let me know

Pet Snake Questions How often should I be feeding my tiny speckled kingsnake

Post image
Upvotes

I recently acquired a speckled kingsnake, she's 6 grams and she's so tiny that I can't even feed her whole pinkies, I cut the heads and back ends off and feed to her, the mid section is too big for her to swallow (I feed frozen thawed to all my snakes). She's eaten both I think twice now? Maybe three times? And one time she didn't eat the back half. The point of this is how often am I supposed to be feeding her (pic is from when I first got her)

Pet Snake Questions Super Dwarf Retic regret?

Post image
106 Upvotes

Photo not mine. I recently visited Clint's Reptile room and didn't expect to, but absolutely fell in love with his super dwarf retics. They were the most amazing handling experience I've ever had. I have a corn snake (and some legged lizards) that I love now but am interested in expanding my collection and my eye is definitely on one of these beauties. It's easy to find people who love them, but are there any dissenters out there? Anyone find them to not be what you wanted? I will admit, I do wish they were a tiny bit heavier bodied. I suspect it may be a slightly more intelligent corn snake experience for a while as they grow slowly. Thoughts?

Pet Snake Questions My children’s python may be ill?

Post image
23 Upvotes

*stimsons (similar to children’s) python.
Last night she regurgitated after 24 hours of digestion. She’s never regurgitated in the almost 3 years I’ve had her, and I’m still working out what caused it (heating malfunction is my main concern so I’ll be monitoring it very regularly in the coming days).
This morning I looked in on her and she was curled up in her basking hidey but she looked very flat? I tapped on the glass a couple times which usually has her poking her head out to investigate, but she didn’t move a millimetre so I opened up and picked up the hidey covering her. She didn’t move until I gave her a light pat near her head then seemed to wake up and slowly move around.
It’s coming out of winter here and she refused food for the last few months so this was her first feed since winter that she took.
It’s like her skin is sagging and she’s lethargic which worried me. Is this normal after regurgitation or should I be worried? I was going to book a vet visit but don’t want to be handling her unless it’s necessary.
TIA. Pic for attention, ft mouse tail just hanging out lmao.

General Question / Discussion How do I help my sister out

My 11.5 year old sister has been obsessed with snakes FOREVER. She's autistic and this is her passion. She had snakes plastered all over her room, she asks for a snake for every birthday.

My mom almost got her one for her last birthday, but it wasn't very well planned. The snake was full grown and a little pricey, and we ultimately decided 11 was a little young to handle the care for a snake that large.

I told her that I love that she's so passionate about snakes, but that she's a bit young and I wanted her to do more research and improve on her reading so she could read about snake care and know what to do if it got sick.

She decided, on her own accord, to start saving for a snake and writing down all the expenses to calculate a cost. We talked about the price of different species and she discussed getting a milk snake for a while, but she really wants a ball python. She had me write down a list of morphs that she's interested in (her og is a pastel banana). She has around $150 saved from doing chores.

Money is pretty tight right now, but obviously this is super impressive for an 11 year old. Is there anything I can do to help her get started? I know enough about pythons to advise her to stay away from spider morphs, but I don't know where you would go for a cheap enclosure or anything like that.
