General Question / Discussion How do I help my sister out

My 11.5 year old sister has been obsessed with snakes FOREVER. She's autistic and this is her passion. She had snakes plastered all over her room, she asks for a snake for every birthday.

My mom almost got her one for her last birthday, but it wasn't very well planned. The snake was full grown and a little pricey, and we ultimately decided 11 was a little young to handle the care for a snake that large.

I told her that I love that she's so passionate about snakes, but that she's a bit young and I wanted her to do more research and improve on her reading so she could read about snake care and know what to do if it got sick.

She decided, on her own accord, to start saving for a snake and writing down all the expenses to calculate a cost. We talked about the price of different species and she discussed getting a milk snake for a while, but she really wants a ball python. She had me write down a list of morphs that she's interested in (her og is a pastel banana). She has around $150 saved from doing chores.

Money is pretty tight right now, but obviously this is super impressive for an 11 year old. Is there anything I can do to help her get started? I know enough about pythons to advise her to stay away from spider morphs, but I don't know where you would go for a cheap enclosure or anything like that.

Pet Snake Questions Super Dwarf Retic regret?

Post image
108 Upvotes

Photo not mine. I recently visited Clint's Reptile room and didn't expect to, but absolutely fell in love with his super dwarf retics. They were the most amazing handling experience I've ever had. I have a corn snake (and some legged lizards) that I love now but am interested in expanding my collection and my eye is definitely on one of these beauties. It's easy to find people who love them, but are there any dissenters out there? Anyone find them to not be what you wanted? I will admit, I do wish they were a tiny bit heavier bodied. I suspect it may be a slightly more intelligent corn snake experience for a while as they grow slowly. Thoughts?

And yes, I jumped when I almost stepped on it. Unfortunately, I missed the owner of the skin by a few minutes, otherwise the picture would have been more than mildly interesting. Black snakes eat rats and mice, so he or she is a very welcome guest on my rock farm.

She was eating fine then all of a sudden her tail looked like this and doesn't want to eat. She's a western hognose snake, around 8 inches long. Please help!

Pet Snake Questions My children’s python may be ill?

Post image
22 Upvotes

*stimsons (similar to children’s) python.
Last night she regurgitated after 24 hours of digestion. She’s never regurgitated in the almost 3 years I’ve had her, and I’m still working out what caused it (heating malfunction is my main concern so I’ll be monitoring it very regularly in the coming days).
This morning I looked in on her and she was curled up in her basking hidey but she looked very flat? I tapped on the glass a couple times which usually has her poking her head out to investigate, but she didn’t move a millimetre so I opened up and picked up the hidey covering her. She didn’t move until I gave her a light pat near her head then seemed to wake up and slowly move around.
It’s coming out of winter here and she refused food for the last few months so this was her first feed since winter that she took.
It’s like her skin is sagging and she’s lethargic which worried me. Is this normal after regurgitation or should I be worried? I was going to book a vet visit but don’t want to be handling her unless it’s necessary.
TIA. Pic for attention, ft mouse tail just hanging out lmao.

Pet Snake Questions Pet snakes with keeled scales? (NOT this one lol)

I love the look and feel of snakes with keeled scales! Obviously a bushmaster is not really in the picture but I was thinking like Pituophis or Garter snakes, I like the size of Pituophis more though. I'd love to hear your ideas and experience with other snakes with keeled scales that make great pets, unlike the one pictured lol

This is just a question early in the process and obviously I would be doing a ton of research going into it beforehand, I already have been keeping snakes for a few years, as well as other exotics.

General Question / Discussion My mum is afraid of snakes

And y'know what? That's fine! She doesn't have to be near snakes in real life! But she used to freak out at snakes on the internet too... Which isn't fine. Don't ask me why. It's autism not reasonism.

Anyway I've taken it upon myself to send her overwhelming cute snek content.

My lovely mother watches all of it. She can even tell a legless lizard apart from a snake now.

Anyway... Do you have any cute snek content to share?

Pet Snake Questions Is this mouse too big?

i got my baby kenyan sand boa a few months ago and i’m not sure how much she should be eating? she usually eats one pinky (2nd pic) every 7-10 days but she hasn’t eaten in over two weeks bc she didn’t eat her last pinky (two weeks ago) or fuzzy (1 1/2 weeks ago). i accidentally purchased fuzzies instead of pinkies and i’m wondering if i don’t have to let them go to waste. If they’re too big, could i just cut them in half or something?

General Question / Discussion Looking to raise a rainbow

Recently came across a 2-month-old Colombian rainbow boa that I for lack of a better word fell in love with. Before making this post, I knew nothing about how to really take care of one, and still don’t, honestly, but I’m trying not to buy her without proper setup or knowledge impulsively.

For her neonate to juvenile months I’ve been watching this video by scalez reptiles and I found everything I’d need from the same source that I’m following to a key but I want to know if this is a good source and if anyone has any real recommendations or advice for me, I plan to wait around a week or 2 weeks to really make this decision because it can been a big investment that can easily go down the drain from a fragile snake, I know that can be tolerable and relatively resilient to certain conditions but humidity and temperature is the biggest concern especially in a gradient style setup.

Colombians are slightly more forgiving from what I’ve read about they don’t require as much humidity or temperature as the Brazilians do but I wanna know as much as I can before I make this choice any advice is helpful.

I just got my first snake today, and this is a 40 gallon tank with 2 hides, a water bowl, some plants, driftwood for scratching, coconut substrate and a side mounted heating pad and top mounted lamp. I’m getting thermostats for them tomorrow. Please let me know if I’m missing anything or anything to watch

General Question / Discussion Thank you all

I just wanted to give a thank you to the community. Today I was able to confidently identify a baby common garter snake and move it off a busy side walk where it had stalled after what I assume was running out of energy due to the low temperatures. I used to be terrified of snakes, but now I know at least the ones in my area and was comfortable getting it to safety without freaking out or accidentally hurting the snake. They are so tiny, it was like handling cold spaghetti.

So thank you for helping me not just learn respect for them, but for giving me the confidence to help out when I could.
