Mechanical Help Please post year, model, trim level, and DTC scan results when asking for help. Thanks.
IF YOU ARE POSTING FOR MECHANICAL HELP:
Please include year/model/engine/transmission information in "Mechanical Help" posts.
If you are looking for help with warning lights on your dashboard, please include results of an error code scan. Without error codes as a starting point, no one will be able to provide meaningful help for you.
The r/subaru community is very willing to help, but there's a baseline amount of context about your car that we need you to provide. Without the very basics like what kind of car you have and what symptoms you're experiencing, no one can give you any sort of accurate assistance.
If you are posting about warning lights, most auto parts stores (NAPA, O'Reillys, AutoZone, etc.) offer code scanning for free. While reading codes is not the same thing as diagnosing a problem, knowing what error codes you have is the minimum amount of information necessary to start figuring out what's wrong with your car.
Thank you :)

Announcement Big update today for Denso CP1.5 owners (2023+ vertical screen radios)
- 23-25MY Outback/Legacy Models (including Wilderness models)
- 23-26MY Ascent Models
- 24-26MY Impreza
- 24-26MY Crosstrek (including Wilderness models)
- 24-26MY WRX
- 25-26MY Forester
- 26MY Forester Wilderness
CP1.5 radio updates are documented in TSB 15-305-22R (public copy not yet up to date). A new update released today, and I've already added the patch notes to the wiki page, but some of these patch notes are interesting enough that I thought it justified an announcement thread as well:
Update 7:
Release date: 8/18/2026
Version: XXXXXX205-280
Category: Meter Display
- Change the charge abbreviation displayed in the power meter area from “CHR” to “CHG” in the 12.3-inch SHEV combination meter (map display mode).
Category: Display
- The following (1 and 2) may occur together:
- After rearranging Home screen icons and exiting edit mode (returning to the normal screen via the Home button), the rearranged icons may revert to their original positions.
- Among the Home screen shortcut icons, ISS/AVH/VDC/SRH/SRVD/ DMS may appear dimmed and cannot be selected. (In this case, the corresponding original controls within the Settings screen still operate normally.)
- Since the use of STARLINK will be discontinued, replace the applicable displays with a different design and logo. The designs shown below are among those subject to change.
- In conjunction with the design changes (logo, etc.) associated with the discontinuation of the STARLINK trademark, update the MY SUBARU icon to a new design as well.
Category: Camera
- If strong light (e.g., sunlight reflection) causes a portion of the upper area of the rear-view image to become severely overexposed (washed out), the rearview image may become hidden (not displayed).
Category: Reset
- The CID may repeatedly reboot, if the ignition is turned ON (IGN-ON) shortly after the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF). Aafter turning the ignition OFF (IGN-OFF), the “See You” message appears on the CID and then disappears; approximately one minute later, the ignition is turned ON again (IGNON).
Category: Navigation
- The MAP application ("Map" icon) may fail to start with “Loading Navigation” displayed continuously and with no map shown.
- The area where the “EXIT” icon should appear might not be visible.
Category: SXM
- Failure to register preset channel
- When certain channels are selected the preset highlight on the CID may jump to a different preset channel and sequential preset scrolling may not work properly.
- If the Favorite List for the Listener Profile prior to the change is displayed follow the work around steps 1-4:
- Change the Listener Profile.
- Register favorites in the OnDemand category up to the maximum (30).
- From the SXM main screen, open Setting > Favorite List; while the Favorite List is opening, press the “X” button to close the screen—repeat this 8 times.
- Press Edit in Favorite List, delete a favorite, then press Back—repeat this cycle twice.
- Audio output from the newly selected source may be lost. With up to 23 teams registered on the SXM Team Notification screen, press the Add button to display a list of teams not yet registered for notifications, then switch the audio source (e.g., to BT or USB audio).
Category: Bluetooth
- Bluetooth audio may appear to be playing on the CID screen, but no sound is output from the vehicle speakers.
Category: Android Auto
- Wireless Android Auto may disconnect intermittently.
Category: CCU log
- When exporting CCU diagnostic logs to a USB memory device from the Dealership Mode screen, the progress bar may appear not to advance at all for approximately the first minute.
Category: Diagnosis
- When using the SSM Data Monitor to check the AUX-BOX USB connection, the diagnosis may incorrectly indicate a USB connection failure even though the USB device is properly connected.
Category: Telematics
- Add an operation in the CID Settings screen to disable vehicle location tracking via telematics services. However, because this feature works in conjunction with the DCM (Data Communication Module), the option will not be displayed and cannot be used unless the DCM software, as well as the CCU software, is updated to a version that supports this feature.
Some of you may have gotten this update as FOTA (update over telematics) already, possibly as early as last week. To check your current software version, open the Settings app, and then on the General tab, scroll down to "System Information" and it will display your current software version.
No word on the aforementioned telematics/DCM update that's supposed to correspond with the feature change. I suspect this will be also pushed as a FOTA update. You'll have to navigate the settings menu and see if the feature is working for you.

Car Mods Magnetize the Badge of Ownership
I’m not a big fan of stickers on my car. But I wanted a magnet that will survive the car wash, the highway and a monsoon thunderstorm. I think I’ve found it. Rare earth magnetic strips that are exactly the same width and length of my badges.

Accident Incredible passenger compartment protection and integrity (TW: badly crunched beautiful Subaru, no human gore or anything)
This Subaru had a very severe accident this morning in Boulder, CO. I'm not going to dwell on specifics. But it likely was airborne for 100+ feet and landed on other (unoccupied) parked cars. Look at how protected the driver space is (it is believed the door was removed by jaws of life). Driver was reported to be extracted alive, no further info available currently.

Mechanical Help Does this seem like a good idea to get this service package done at the dealership?
2015 Subaru Legacy with 182,000 miles. Have not had this car serviced at all since buying it used 3 years ago besides oil changes. Would it be worth it to do this if I want this car to last as long as possible? Or should I go to an independent shop? I've called different mechanics and they're all charging the same price if not more.

Finally hit 200,000 miles with 2019 Ascent
CORRECTION: 2020 Ascent (bought in September 2019)
Long daily commutes, road trips to Florida, GA, SC, NC, NY, MA, Vermont, Maine, MI, OH...
Original transmission. Regular maintenance, i.e. brake fluid and transmission fluid flush, oil change. Oil change @ 7-8000 miles. A few minor fender benders.
At some point, the ride was not as smooth but found out that 2 alloy rims were bent from hitting curbs and or pot holes at high speed. After fixing the rims, it has been very smooth again. My 17 years old son just commented about how smooth the car is this Sunday.
Hoping to drive at least 25-50,000 more miles (1-2 years).
(My last Subaru, 2013 Outback died at 187,000 miles because i neglected to fix the head gasket.)

Rallying crosstrek?
Hey guys! I own a wonderful 2018 Subaru crosstrek with a 6 speed manual transmission. I don’t want to do any serious racing or anything, but will sliding around on dirt a little destroy my car? Thanks!

Buying Advice When to buy forester hybrid
Hi 👋
I’m considering buying my first Subaru. I’m really interested in the Forester Hybrid. The financing deals for this model aren’t as good as other Subaru models, unfortunately.
Do you think that will continue to be the case through the end of the year, or are there likely to be any good deals on the Forester Hybrid between now and January?
Trying to decide if it’s worth it to keep waiting.
Mechanical Help 2016 Wrx center differential rebuild advice needed
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello, my girlfriend’s center diff failed on her car and we ended up putting a whole other transmission in because the shop figured it was their easiest bet. So now I want to rebuild the old center diff for a spare and I’m assuming the viscous coupler needs to be replaced but I was wondering if these roller bearings on the upper shaft need to be replaced? TIA

Thoughts on maintenance
I have a Subaru Forester 2024, around 34k miles. I’ve been doing all my maintenance at a local Subaru dealer. Is this price legit and do you guys recommend doing all of this?

2007 Forester alternator question
I checked the search feature and haven't found a definitive answer so I'll risk asking outright. Will an alternator from a 2007 Forester XT turbo fit on a regular Forester X NA engine?

Mechanical Help Lower control arm bushings
How bad are these lower control arms? I don’t feel anything abnormal braking and no metal on metal noises. Maybe a little rattling when backing out of parking spaces but can’t remember if it’s always been like that or if it started later on

Mechanical Help Can you guys help me find this connector’s mate?
I just finished putting things in my 16 crosstrek back together after replacing the valve cover gaskets. I have this 1 little connector that I don’t remember disconnecting (doesn’t mean I didn’t though). I should have taken pics before unhooking everything, I know. Either way I still would like to know where this lil guy should call home. Thanks in advance ❤️

P0455 Code (EVAP System)
2022 Impreza Hatchback, has check engine light popped up 2 days after filling the tank. Code is P0455
~48000km, Car drives very normally as usually. Without clearing the code myself, I tightened the gas cap and drive for more than 100km, check engine light still there.
Gas cap looks very normal to me (or I just dont know how to inspect?), had a shop put on another gas cap from another impreza, they said check engine light still popped up,
I am very new to car and what should I do/inspect/diagnose next? Would this be something still under warranty- checked warranty booklet, very less likely.
What would it possibly be other than gas cap?
Thanks everyone in advance.
Can anyone recommend a mechanic in CT?
Getting a clunky when turning at slow speeds and I'm thinking either tie rods, cv joints, or axles. I usually do the work myself but don't have the time or tools for the job.
I could do Fairfield or New Haven county but would go a bit further for a great shop
Buying Advice Shopping extended warranty?
If I buy a cpo Subaru Crosstrek from a dealer, is the extended warranty negotiable? If so, what is reasonable?
Also, can you take the car home and call multiple dealers to see who would give the best deal, or do you have to get it from the dealership you bought it from?
