MOD [MOD] Feature Designer: September: The Cozy DH Stitchery

Hi, Stitchers!

This month’s feature designer is The Cozy DH Stitchery!! We are so excited to bring you this interview and introduce you to Toot & DH. I know these patterns pop up here often and I’m so excited to share this with everyone. The designers have also generously offered a 10% discount with REDDHOT10 for the month!

Who are you?
We are Toot (she/they) and DH (they/them), a queer married couple from Canada who design under The Cozy DH Stitchery! Being the more front-facing of the duo, DH is the one answering the questions.

What’s something people don’t know about you?
Because we're a two-person team, each pattern is fine-tuned with the stitcher in mind.

How did you get started cross stitching?
We both learned to stitch in the 1900s and have circled back to it on and off for most of our lives. We picked it back up in 2023 due to disabilities making other crafts less feasible and we seem to have found our calling!

When and why did you start designing patterns?
Toot was looking for Five Nights at Freddy's patterns and simply couldn't find any good ones. Okay, I said. I guess I'll do it myself. We started with FNAF, Valorant, and Mail Time patterns, with our first original pattern being Crockpot Magic.

Where do you get your inspiration?
We draw heavily on the weird and wonderful world around us. We both have had a long-time love and fascination with folklore, mythology, fairy tales, and urban legends. Toot's college degree had a minor in folklore, and she also draws in a lot of inspiration from horror movies. I have a degree in Celtic Studies, and a special interest in conspiracy theories and ancient aliens.

Describe your designs using only adjectives.
Cute. Weird. Surprising. Comfortable.

What design was your favorite to make?
Our Patreon pattern for August is one that I am particularly proud of - it's called Summer Camp Slasher, and it's an homage to the summer camp horror genre, as well as my own childhood experiences of camp and ghost stories about deranged murderers coming up from the floorboards.

Favorite DMC color?
Mine is DMC 16. I would have said before 704, but I think 16 is my new love. It's just so intensely green. Toot's favourite is DMC 210.

Any advice for new stitchers or designers?
For new stitchers, I say - it's only floss and thread. Don't stress it. If you're starting with DMC, floss is incredibly cheap, don't let one tangle ruin hours of your life. Cut it and move on. My other piece of advice is that nothing is too difficult. Pick a piece you want to stitch and you can learn the skills along the way - you'll be more motivated to stick with it and learn if it's a project you love.

For new designers - think about who you're designing for. Not just in terms of your target audience, but think about the actual experience of stitching. Are there huge blocks of colour that you, personally, wouldn't want to stitch? Is this going to be a weird shape or size to finish? Don't rush it. Do a bit, step away, come back with fresh eyes, repeat.

Where can we find you online?
We are on all the platforms - Etsy, fybe, ko-fi, but the best place to find us is on our site TheCozyDHStitchery.com - BUT! You can also find us at your local LNS. We were a vendor at Needlework Marketplace this past August, and you might be able to snag one of our paper patterns in person or request your LNS reach out to us for an order!

And both myself and Toot stream on Twitch. Toot streams no-commentary video gameplay MWFSu 10am-1pm EST, with comfy co-working vibes. I stream co-working (often showing designs in progress and behind-the-scenes of being a designer) Mondays 1-5pm and Thursdays 10am-4pm, and I do a stitch-with-me Saturdays 10am-1pm.

CHAT [CHAT] Kalynovska Studio - Ai Art or not?

Upvotes

Hi, I am very new to this hobby and would appreciate some help spotting AI "Art".

So I bought a pattern from KalynovskaStudio on Etsy a few months ago of mice picking radishes, since it really reminded me of my old childhood storybook and I immediately fell in love with it.

I didn’t think any of it because of the higher price compared to other obvious Ai patterns. And since it looked very intricate I just assumed it was handmade.

Today I was recommended another one of their mouse patterns, but it looked AI and that’s when I went to check out their shop. They had hundreds of patterns in different art styles and so i got suspicious. I am really torn now, since it looked like they use patterns based of ai art as well. Maybe I am wrong, but that be a bummer since I absolutely adore those mice picking radishes, because they remind me of my childhood.

Anyone know anything about it? Are there other shops without ai art you could recommend?

Sorry for any errors, English isn’t my first language :)

CHAT [CHAT] Can someone help me identify is this pattern is AI?

Upvotes

Hey guys! I'm in love with this pattern: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4546867752/oak-tree-four-seasons-wide-landscape?ref=share_ios_native_control
But I'm afraid I might be falling in love for yet another pattern that is AI made. This store has some lovely designs, but at least some of them look like AI to me, which is a huge red flag, but I'm not sure about this one.
Has anyone bought anything from this store before?
Or what do you think, is it AI?
thank you for your help!

FO [FO] Quick finish - Commemorating an epic gaming journey

Hi all! For a few years now my partner and I have been slowly working our way through the spaceship combat roguelike game FTL, and last week we finished our goal of defeating the game on Hard difficulty with all 28 ships. The hardest one was Engi B, since you only start with one crew member. That crew member was named Scoops on our winning run, and he became something of a meme for the rest of our battles. Every time we saw a Scoops for hire in a shop we hired him.

So I stitched this little badge honoring our beloved Scoops, savior of Universe 0, Jack of all trades, and Generally Good Guy. I think he turned out super cute, and it only took like 3 hours!

Pattern was self-drafted in StitchFiddle using screenshots from the game as reference

WIP [WIP] Temperature tree project

Enjoying seeing the colours change through the seasons with my first temperature based project! Wasn't expecting so many 30°C+ (86°F) when I decided on the scale at the start of the year though!

I am getting a little bored of stitching the same kind of shape each day so I have my eye on a more interesting pattern for next year 👀

(Also my first post here, hi! I love seeing everyone's in progress and finished projects so decided to show one of mine off!)

CHAT [CHAT] Request for help finding instructions for Dimensions Kit #13083 (Animal Babes Baby Quilt)

! Updated - Per Rule 3, I am not asking for the chart itself, I am asking if I've overlooked any appropriate ways to obtain the chart !

Hi! This is my first-ever reddit posting, apologies if the request is not appropriate.

Someone in my fiber arts group has lost the second page of instructions for Dimensions Kit #13083 (Animal Babes Baby Quilt) - it was given to her by her late husband, and she'd like to finish it but feels she can't without the color chart. She's not comfortable using computers so I said that I'd help.

What I've done so far:

- I started with a Google search, but without luck. The pattern seems to be sold out everywhere; I believe it's been out of print for a while.

- I called Wilton, the vendor listed on the first page of instructions (see attached). They did call me back but said that they no longer own the division responsible for the cross-stitch quilts, and they referred me to a different vendor, advantus.com.

- I emailed that vendor (advantus.com), haven't heard back yet.

I don't do cross-stitch myself but thought that perhaps someone on this subreddit might have some ideas on how to obtain that second page of instructions. I've posted what we have in case that's helpful. The instructions have been translated into many languages, we need the English version. <update> Per Rule 3, I am *not* requesting the chart itself, only asking if there are other legal ways to obtain the chart than what I tried above </update>.

Again, this is my first reddit posting *and* I'm not familiar with cross stitch (I knit) so apologies in advance if this isn't appropriate, and many thanks to all for their patience.

CHAT [CHAT] How do you deal with carpal tunnel?

Post image
Upvotes

I have the next two today off and I decided I was going to finish my current project, but my carpal tunnel is so bad today I can probably only do about 10 stitches before I need to stop to get feeling back in my hand. I have tried to stitch wearing my brace and that was just too uncomfortable. I tried switching what hand I hold the needle with, and just no. The green half stitches are all that I managed to do in 40 minutes of work. So what are your suggestions?

CHAT [CHAT] thread organisers and blends

Hi lovely cross stitch community,

I just got myself a Pako floss organiser and I do like it, however I’m wondering what to do about the blends. My pattern has two and I’m not sure if there’s a way to put them in as well.
I can’t think of any but having to get the chart out again to check which ones I have to combine and then look again for the symbol on the Pako just seems like too much work..
How do you guys do it? Any ideas?

CHAT [CHAT] Markup R-XP 2.0.2 on MacOS

Anyone using the latest Markup R-XP on a Mac and not a device running iOS? I know this is not how it was designed to be used, but it previously worked just fine for me this way. I don't have an iPad, and using my phone screen is small and annoying.

The new version is giving me some trouble with marking up stitches, zooming, and panning. Since we don't have the ability to choose specific functions and it's meant to do it intuitively, I find myself unable to pan the image successfully. I'm also marking off stitches while I try to pan or zoom.

I'm sure those of us working on laptops are doing some troubleshooting. What have you found that works?

Hey everyone! I'm back with Part 3, and the process is moving forward!

Now it's not just the eyes — the nose and more details of his face are finally appearing on the 18 count Aida canvas. It's so exciting to see the progress!

How do you like this timelapse format? Is there anything you think I should change or improve in the next videos? Let me know what you think. ❤️

Pattern details: Custom pattern by Ukrainian designer Alexander Stitch, based on my daughter's drawing.

I’m feeling Christmasy 😂 Please share your favorite quick Christmas patterns to help me scratch the itch! (No full coverage please - I’m three years in to working on my husband’s stocking and we’ve since had two babies. Maybe I’ll have them all done in ten years or so)

Ok.

This was the first time I ever embroidered on wood.

And compared to fabric.... It was hell.

Then I got used to embroidering with floss.

Then came embellishments. And once again it was hell.

Then I got used to it.

And now once it's finished (I will cover the back once I get the glue) and is looking soooo pretty I am thinking about ordering a second one of those.

P.s. it's a kit by WonderlandCrafts the key is FLW-009

CHAT [CHAT] Why is the yellow stitched on the left so messy compared to the ones on the right? And how do I giz it?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm working on the left side of the pattern (sorry, i tried to flip the pic multiple times. Dont know how to 😅) , it's all solid blue with yellow, pink green lines going through it..

I started with the yellow but couldn't seem to get the stitches to look OK, thought maybe the floss was old since I had this patern for long time > tried it on the right side, not perfect but much better

How do I fix it?

Thank you.
