Discussion AMA: We are the Foundry Virtual Tabletop team! Ask Us Anything! (6th Anniversary!)

Hello everyone!

Here we are again, difficult to believe it's been six awesome years with Foundry VTT! Our sixth anniversary celebration has been going for almost a full week now, and that seems like the ideal time to kick off our usual r/FoundryVTT AMA.

We're gonna get things rolling a few hours early in order to give members of our international community time to get their questions up before the team starts waking up. Please jump right in and post your questions in the comments below. As the team starts coming online for the day we'll start answering!

For those who don't know me, I'm Anathema (Nath), Community Manager for Foundry VTT. Many of you may already know me from my presence on our Community Discord Server, my occasional posts and comments here, or my work on a variety of our premium content products. I'll be joined by several members of our team who have graciously agreed to take some time out of their day to answer questions here, including u/atropos_nyx (Andrew, creator and lead developer), u/fyorl (Kim, developer and dnd5e development lead), u/mattexdee (Matt, content developer in charge of D&D products and marketing lead), u/caeora (creative director of the Ember project) and u/drewzelle (environment artist, Ember project), and maybe even a few others. I'll come back and add names for them if they show up!

If you haven't already read it (hah, see what I did there?) our Year in Review article and the details for the current Premium Content Showcase share some interesting data about how the past year has been for us. We have a few other anniversary events scheduled for later in the week as well.

Our only request is that if your question is related to technical support or troubleshooting you head on over to the discord server so that you can find better real-time assistance, or complete a contact-us form for help via email.

We look forward to reading all your questions!

Thank you everyone for all your awesome questions and for keeping things friendly! We've been running for more than 12 hours so we're gonna call this one a success and close out now.

We might opt to pick up the occasional straggler question, but we're officially done for now! Look forward to the next AMA thread next year, and please join our other events. Including Caeora's walk through the lore and world of Ember tomorrow. Check out our anniversary celebration article for more info!

Commercial Gambit's FXMaster+ August Release: Neon [System Agnostic]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Content Name: Gambit's FXMaster+

Content Type: Effects

System: [None]

Link: Gambit's Lounge

Hello again everybody! The August release has turned out really cool I think.. Neon ended up being a super versatile filter, I think it can effectively introduce Neon for things like signs or buildings, but can also act as a more general color enhancer. Excited to see what everybody does with it!

Neon has three color matching modes, Color Families, Custom Colors, and Color Families + Custom Colors. Color Families allow generally matching color ranges (Blue, Pink, Red, etc), while custom colors allow specifying a specific hex code with separate controls to allow how much is matched outside of that specific selection. Neon Style can be one of Outline, Fill, or Fill + Outline to match inner or outer areas on the matched colors. There are also Core and Halo Colors that can override matched colors, and many parameters to adjust intensity, outline, halo, and more!

Hope everyone enjoys!

Help Feedback Needed: Would a focused SFX library be useful to Foundry GMs?

I'm a professional sound designer looking to transition part of my existing library, as well as future content, into the Foundry ecosystem in a way that actually makes sense for GMs. [System Agnostic]

The idea I'm considering is one larger, human-made SFX module organized specifically for tabletop use, with broad main categories such as (just a few examples):

  • Combat
  • Horror
  • Creatures
  • Item Loot
  • Audio Cues
  • Crafting
  • Coins & Transactions
  • Magic
  • Environments
  • Interactions

Inside those would be much smaller and more focused sections like;

Creatures

  • Troll (with sounds like idle, attack, pain, death, etc...)
  • Demon
  • Goblin
  • Undead
  • ...

Horror

  • Jumpscares
  • Suspicious / Creepy Sounds
  • Ghosts
  • Gore / Slime

Combat

  • Magic Spells
  • Archery
  • Melee Combat

Items

  • Item pickups
  • Crafting
  • Loot / legendary item reveals
  • Coins and transactions

Those are only examples. There are many possible ways to organize a large SFX library, and that's one of the main things I'm trying to figure out before committing to a structure.

What I'd really like to know from Foundry GMs:

  • How often do you currently use SFX during sessions?
  • If a large SFX library was already available inside Foundry and broken down into small, focused categories, would you use SFX more often?
  • What main categories or specific types of sounds would actually be most useful to you?
  • How would you personally want a large SFX library organized so it stays quick and easy to use?

I'm mainly trying to determine whether there is real demand for a professionally produced SFX library built specifically around Foundry use, and what structure would make it genuinely useful rather than just becoming a huge pile of audio files.

Any feedback from GMs would be very useful.

Help Fabula Ultima, looking for modules.

Hello, I'm looking to play GMless with someone else to Fabula Ultima. I do have the Mythic GME module and the One Page Engine too. I would love to find more rare gems and so on. Probably anything and everything Fabula Ultima, but I'm interested in having perhaps an interactive map, or better journaling, character bonds/trees, and so on. I'm happy to check out paid content.

We are playing an Isekai with techno-fantasy (similar to Final Fantasy XII? I think it was)

Help Hide part of a chat message/ability

I was building an encounter and something came up.

I wanted to show the players an ability the monster had, but not all of it. I needed parts of it to be hidden until they use a Study action or something similar.

For example, the Pest Mascot has the Regenerator trait, but I don't want to show how to circumvent it, so it would show up like this:
Regeneration. The pest regains 5 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point. If it takes fire damage, this trait doesn't function at the start of the pest's next turn.

And of course, I would need a quick way to enable the hidden information to be shown.

Is there a mod or a workaround for that?

Help Players bounce into a non-existent wall (KINGMAKER PARTY DO NOT LOOK AT THIS)

Post image

Hi there, I am setting up a dungeon for my players, and was testing out the shadows for the walls to make sure it was properly being obscured until I realized that I could not drag them past a certain point vertically. For the tokens, they cannot move downwards from this point. What seems to be the problem?

Help [Module / Macro Request] Container items to store and grant spells dynamically (Item-based Spellcasting)

¡HOLA A TODOS!, [D&D5e]

Answered Looking for help with UI Scaling after version update

[System Agnostic]

Hi all,

I recently updated from v10 to v14 and some of the UI changes make it borderline unusable. I'm sure that there are settings to fix this, but I've been unable to find anything online.

First, the right-side panel has all options open at once. (That pale box at the top right is as big as it will let me make the chat functionality). Clicking the tabs does not change anything.

Second, the existing UI elements (such as macros and scene navigation) are taking up half of the screen.

If anyone can help me with either of these UI issues, I'd be extremely appreciative.

This month, I'm celebrating 5 YEARS of mapmaking, and ten years of gming! I am really grateful for the interactions I've got in the TTRPG community during all this time, for the people who passed by and for the ones who stayed. As a thank you, I am offering a full month membership to my FoundryVTT tier (Overseers), so you can get ALL my maps for FREE. Yes: this includes everything I've published since I started. That's over 200 original packs, 1.500 maps in total, including variations. The Overseers tier also feature my FoundryVTT compendium modules for each pack.

- My FoundryVTT compendium packs come fully configured with variations, walls, doors, lights, stairs and teleporters.

- They are all system agnostic.

- Most of the library is updated to v13/v14 already. Heads up: I am still porting some of the bigger buildings compendia from v12 to v14.

- These gift codes will only be active for 24 hours and are limited to 100 redeems. Grab them while you can!!

Peruse my work and only grab the packs you need for your game, or visit my Atlas post to grab the whole library. Your continued support would mean a lot to me! However, times are hard for everyone. I'll be glad if you decide to stick around. I'll understand if you don't. In both cases, I hope these maps will bring some extra wonder to your sessions!

Make sure to use these links and not sub through my profile or Patreon might try to charge you! Choose whatever link speaks to you: they both have 50 slots available and do the same thing.

Gift link #1: https://www.patreon.com/Eledryll/redeem/EB277

Discussion [System Agnostic] Theatre-of-the-Mind Play

I know Foundry is known for its robust token setup and dynamic features, but does anyone use it for TotM play? I know Alchemy VTT is a more popular option for it but I'm curious how it would work in Foundry and what people's experiences are.

Non-commercial Resource Fabricate crafting is public in v1.9.0

Post image
171 Upvotes

Fabricate just got a lot bigger! This is the first public update since v1.2.1, and it changes a lot.

Crafting with Essences in the Fabricate player app

Players can now:

  • Craft directly from a single window that combines gathering, crafting, an alchemy workbench, activity journal, and inventory
  • Discover and learn recipes
  • Pick ingredients from their inventory
  • Track missing materials with a Shopping List
  • Use tools that provide bonuses, consume uses, and break
  • Resolve recipes with simple, multi-stage, or progressive checks
  • Produce different outcomes depending on the result
  • Salvage items back into useful components

Combined with gathering, Fabricate now ships a complete crafting loop for your game worlds. Check out the documentation for full details, and to get started using Fabricate!

Build the crafting system you want

Fabricate isn't built around one specific set of crafting rules, or tied to one game system. Alchemy, Smithing, Cooking, Enchanting, Herbalism, Monster harvesting, Rune-carving, Engineering, Potion brewing - Fabricate can do it all. It's a blank canvas for you to build whatever you can imagine! Well, that's the goal at least 😅

You define the recipes, ingredients, checks, outcomes, tools, prerequisites and progression.

A character can know some recipes but not others. Recipes can be hidden, discovered during play, require knowledge of earlier recipes, or be unlocked by meeting prerequisites. Recipes can become rewards for players, and folded into character progression.

Checks are much more flexible

A Fabricate crafting check in the GM app

Crafting doesn't have to be a single pass/fail roll. You can build recipes around:

  • Single checks
  • Multiple checks
  • Chained stages
  • Progressive resolution (where rolls are spent down an ordered list of results)
  • Different check outcome tiers

A terrible result might waste materials. A marginal result might produce something inferior. A great result might create something exceptional, or whatever else your system needs.

Tools

The Fabricate Tool Studio in the GM app

Tools have had a little uplift. They could already have limited uses, and break. Now they can contribute bonuses, have prerequisites to use, or to gain the bonus, and no longer require you to define them as crafting components before you can use them.

Salvage

Salvage in the Fabricate player app

Salvage lets players take configured items apart again, even in bulk, which makes resource loops much more interesting for games built around scavenging, repairs, harvesting monster parts from corpses, or resource management and scarcity.

Fabricate supports huge crafting systems

A big reason I held back the public release was performance. I did not want to dump a data migration on everyone that I could predict, and prevent.

Fabricate now does a lot less avoidable work behind the scenes. Actor resources are cached more efficiently, writes are batched, duplicate processing has been cut, and expensive inventory scans are deferred until they're actually needed.

The goal is to support large crafting systems with thousands of recipes and components without the player or GM experience stuttering and stalling. I've already had Early Access users implementing the full crafting and salvage system for the Fallout TTRPG, which is exactly the sort of thing I was worried that people would build with it, and why I did this work in the first place 😅

If you tried Fabricate around v1.2.1 and thought it looked promising but wasn't quite complete enough yet, I'd really love you to give v1.9.0 another look and tell me what you think 🙏

Use of AI

Fabricate's documentation now includes a detailed AI Disclosure page. Yes, Fabricate is built with the help of AI coding agents. If you want to read how and why, as well as learn more about the measures I take to protect your game worlds, please give it a read.

Help Blurry webm map

Hello, I've been trying to prep with Foundry for a while and so far so good, but yesterday I tried several times different ways to use s map from Dynamic Dungeons, which has animations and so, and it looks really blurry, kind of when bitrate gets smashed on Twitch. I'm just wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if there's a way I can make it better or if it is just how it is suposed to be. Thank you in advance!

Help [DND 5.5e] How to add +1 or +2 etc to weapons? How to add spells that actually fit in a characters spell casting?

Its not clear how to do so, despite messing around with editing the weapon.

Any help is appreciated

For the second question, I can add spells from compendiums, but for example, I dont expect to be able to add eldritch blast to a wizard. Not sure how to create the scaffolding for myself and especially for players.

Commercial The Troll’s Bridge from Angela Maps -- New map pack module for FVTT [System Agnostic]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Content Name: The Troll’s Bridge by Angela Maps
Content Type: Map, Module
System: Any
Description: Under the bridge down-troll is where I drew some blood! Did you know that the etymology of the word toll stems from the ancient practice of subcontracting trolls to collect fees on public infrastructure? Now, while that might not be true according to the "Dictionary" or whatever, it could entirely be true in your setting. Whether trolls have long gone extinct, hunted down by anti-taxation monster hunters, or still practice this noble tradition to this day, the slightly overgrown but still charming and sturdy bridge in this map will allow your players to experience that classic trope. Fully animated and available in two additional variants, with a more decrepit bridge, and a modern and tidy, freshly maintained version, this map may have your players hoping they had, and not for the first time, a billy goat with them!

My maps are available on my Patreon, Ko-fi, and the Foundry Marketplace.

Answered Force Hotbar For Players

[System Agnostic]

Hey there folks,

Just a quick question today.
What is the currently used module to force hotbars out to all my players?
It's a chore logging into each account to set up every hotbar. I'd love to be able to just set up my own and then push it out to everybody.

Was asked about why I would wish to do this:
I want to control what my players have in their hotbar.
I do not want to log into each of their accounts and place everything in every player's hotbar individually.
I wish to set up my GM hotbar and then push this out to all players.

For reference, here is an old module:
https://foundryvtt.com/packages/player-configurator

Thank you very much!

Help Alternatives to Quick Combat/Mods that Display Full Item Description w Limited Pop-Ups and Auto-Roll Damage?

[DND5E] I've been really missing Quick Combat since it was apparently discontinued and MidiQOL's tendency to 1) not display spell descriptions in chat when used 2) make users navigate a pop-up when attacking and 3) roll separately for damage rolls after the attack roll by pressing another button are kind of slowing down my game. Any alternatives to Quick Combat out there or recommendations for settings I could change to get the same effect?

Help Questions before buying

Hi everyone,

I plan to start a DnD 5e campaign with friends and am I considering buying Foundry as VTT.

I understood that I need to buy the PHB to play the full version of DnD. But what about the other books ?

Do I need the DM Guide book ?

Do I have access to basic monster without the monster manual or I can't play without ? (Or buy it later)

Also, I saw a lot of people talking about modules, and I understood that they are like "mods" for foundry. Do I need to bother with that or I can just play "vanilla" ?

Thanks for your help :)

Help Grid adjustment for different levels in same scene (V14)

I'm trying to adjust the grids for each level in a scene, but when I edit one the other goes back to being unadjusted. Basically, can only edit the grid for all levels at once, instead of each level differently. Any workaround for this? [D&D5e]

Discussion Dreadwyld / Mythwoven Information

[system agnostic]
I saw the Dreadwyld / Mythwoven system in the Foundry sale and from the brief desciption it sounds intersting. I went to look for more infomation and couldn't find anything. No youtube, no reddit, nothing. Anyone know what this is based on or is it just some random one-off setting.
