LOL sometimes grandma's aren't too grandma-like. At one point in their lives they were young and pretty too
My mom came from a large family and I asked my grandma why did she have so many kids. Her reply "I just liked doing it with your grandfather too much... and before we knew it, there was another baby"
I'm not even sure that much is really true. At least not to the extend you might think. They were probably a lot more open about it with their peers than they were with you. Just like the people here probably wouldn't be as open about it with their children as they are here.
That’s all I think about when people nag me and my husband about when we’re having kids and how we need to hurry up. Like damn, do y’all want our raw doggin schedule?
I remember a friend telling me she was trying for another kid.
I laughed and replied, "polite way to tell me you're getting creampied every night"
Luckily she saw the funny side
This doesn't really hold up as sex positivity and openness has shifted significantly in recent decades. Yes, people are more open about it with their peers than cross-generationally, however, at the societal level, it is absolutely objectively true that current generations are more open than previous ones (irrespective of current rates of sex by generation).
I think it's something that fluctuates naturally over generations. The 50s were buttoned up, 60s were very sex positive and more open, 70s/80s a lot of places drifted more conservative again. We've probably trended more open since the Victorian era but it's not linear.
Man, every time I read threads like this I'm like... y'all need some fuckin history. Read some of the horny shit the classical Greeks or Han-era Chinese were writing, lmao. It would make the raunchiest smut writer blush even today.
I was watching an entirely unrelated video on ancient Egypt and there was a question along the lines of their attitudes on sex. Apparently and unsurprisingly, they were very open about it and enjoyed it often. According to the researcher they had a phrase for it - "having a pleasant day" IIRC but I'm sure that was a cleaned up version.
You're confusing specific bits of literature for wider legal and societal recognition and discourse regarding sex. They can overlap, but they absolutely can differ, too.
I think the current generation is a little less open about it than the past couple - Millennials and Gen Xers.
We had glam metal, gangsta rap, worldwide porn etc. Nowadays teenagers kind of cringe when there's a sex scene in a movie. The opposite was true when we were kids.
The pervasiveness of social media gives the illusion that we’re more sex positive now than in the past. 20+ years ago you had no venue to be sex positive other than talking to friends etc. I’d say we’re more comfortable mainstreaming kink now than we were 30 years ago but that’s also due to social media. If you don’t know about something, you’re not about to try it on for size.
I agree with you - having private bedrooms and private spaces for each family member is a really modern concept. Whole families used to share rooms. Even the very rich would have servants in their bedrooms. Sex used to be a lot more open and a lot less taboo to see or hear happen.
Nobody was more freakshow open about it (when they were young) than the boomers. It’s gotten more and more prudish since the ‘90s, though it’s gotten fantastically easier to be openly LGBT.
Sometimes I think of why people are so horny, but then I realized every single one of your direct ancestors on both sides of your parents fucked to produce you. That's a long line of a lot of people who did the nasty.
Queen Victoria was madly in love with her husband and while didn't care for raising children but she was so down bad for him she kept getting pregnant. In her journals she expressed frustration that pregnancy kept getting in the way of her sex life.
Back in my restaurant days about 25 years ago, there was a couple that worked BOH that had 5 kids. They asked why I didn’t have kids and I asked back why they gave so many. “We don’t have cable (shrug)” I hope they are doing ok. They were the cutest and always lovey with each other
My 82-year-old mother-in-law told me that she once asked her mother how come she only had two children, despite being married quite young.
The answer was "Because I behaved myself'" which I always thought was a really sad answer.
Why is this answer sad? What does the old woman behaving herself have to do with her having only two children? She refused to have sexual intercourse with her husband?
Yeah, it implies less penetrative sex because it correlates with fewer children, assuming no other pregnancy protection.
We dont know the exact nature of their relationship of course, but the commenter inferred the relationship to have less sex. Not to mention that previous generations had different views on sex than today, which plays into the inference that they were unhappy with their sex life for pragmatic reasons
When my 92 year old aunt got herself a 78 year old boyfriend she exclaimed in wonderment and delight that she hadn't thought she could still be orgasmic. A little TMI for me!
My grandma is 94 (and unfortunately in hospice care right now). My grandpa died last Christmas just shy of his 96th birthday. He’s never had a filter, but my grandma is a more reserved Catholic woman. They had 9 kids. Only 6 were actually my grandma’s. My grandpa had 3 kids from a previous marriage, but his first wife died a few days after giving birth to their third child. One day, about a year ago, one of my sisters jokingly asked my grandpa why he had so many kids. He just laughed and said that he couldn’t help it, sometimes he’d wake up and grandma was already down there helping herself.
They were the greatest couple I’ve ever known. A love that was truly special. And they loved their 50+ kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and great great grandkids fiercely. My grandpa was a larger-than-life character, and a great example of a good man. While I’m not religious, my grandma perfectly exemplified God’s love. A woman of faith with no hate, only love. She is currently dying. When she is gone, something special will be lost, but she will forever live on through the love that she shared.
Thank you. She’s never alone. With the previously mentioned 50+ children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, she will be surrounded by loved ones until she passes. And then we’ll all celebrate her life together once she does.
Liking a nice butt runs deep in the women of my maternal line. The reason I know this is because my sweet 80 yo grandma and I were once watching TV in complete silence until she went "he has a nice butt". And I also know it because I once asked my mom what she liked about my dad and she with no hesitation said "he's got a nice butt". And I also know it because the first time I saw my partner's butt in his underwear I was like "oh hell yeah, jackpot"
My uncles were telling me the birth years of my mom and her siblings. She is the youngest of 6, but I did not realize that there was a 4-year age gap between my mom and the 2nd-youngest sibling.
Uncles casually shared that Grandma was a baby-making-machine for 5 years in a row, "She was a good Catholic girl."
If you ask her why she had so many kids, she would say she is an Irish Catholic farmer - the Lord said to multiply, and she needed the extra farm hands.
If you ask grandpa why he had so many kids, he would say he is really horny all the time.
What will really blow your mind is my grandma had her first kid at 13 and no twins, meaning there was a point in time where more of her life had been spent pregnant than not pregnant
Oh my god, my Gram would say the exact same thing. She first did it while I was driving down the highway at 17 and I could not stop laughing. I miss her.
I used to dance in lingerie in a sex shop window when I was about 23. Grandmas loved it. When they walked by they would wave at you and give you a “you go” look.
Back in the day I had an 80something year old great aunt insist she get invited to a bachelorette party at the male strip club, back when those were big in the 80s, because "They don't have anything I haven't seen before."
She not only was the only girl out of a family of 10 she was also a widow so she'd seen plenty of twigs & berries long before she got married.
I asked her once what they did when she had her period, because she was born pre-1900 when menstrual pads weren't widely available & may have been priced outta the range of some folks, & she said "Oh there was bucket with clean rags under the sink &...." I stopped her there because I fully got it & finally understood why we said "on the rag" or called pads "rags."
I think about her often & miss her lots. RIP MS. BESSIE!!
I still remember the horror on my family's faces when my great-grandmother proclaimed "I love a man with a hairy chest. I love feeling fur on all sides when making love." After my cousin was talking about how she hated guys with "too much" body hair.
My grandma had 9 kids. Recently, she went to new doctor and while he was gathering her medical history, he asked how many children she had. When she told him he asked, “are you Catholic?” She said, “No, just a horny Protestant.” LOL
My 90 year old grandma said to me, "My one advice for marriage, never go to bed angry. You always make up. How do you think I got so many kids?!" She had 6 kids.
My grandma to my 4 year old sister when she asked what she did “before she got old”:
“I was a prostitute sweety!”
My mom had a fun time explaining that one.
A kid I teach comes from a family like that. I asked him if he was related to one guy with the same last name who was three years ahead of me (I teach at the high school I went to) and asked if it was his cousin or something and he’s like, no, that’s my brother, my parents have 13 kids. Like GOOD LORD who has the money for that??
I learned earlier this year that my great grandma was throwing that thang back back in the day. We're not entirely sure how many men she had kids with.
