I'm 31 and work as a mechanical engineer making about $108k AUD in Perth.

I got offered a FIFO role at a mine for just under $180k plus super. Originally I was told it would be 8 days on 6 days off, which actually sounded pretty manageable.

Then during the final call they casually mentioned that for at least the first 6 months it'll probably be 14 days on 7 off because the project is behind schedule. Mostly 12 hour days too.

My girlfriend was already nervous about the 8 and 6 roster but when I told her about the change she basically said if I accept it, I should assume our relationship is over. We've been together 4 years and were planning on buying a place together. I've got a decent amount saved toward my half already.

To make it more complicated my current boss found out I was interviewing because they contacted him for a reference. He suddenly offered me $128k and a senior title to stay, but also made it pretty clear that if I leave for FIFO and hate it in 6 months I shouldn't expect my old job back.

So now I'm looking at roughly $50k more to spend half my life at a mine, potentially lose my relationship and close the door on a job I actually like.

At the same time I keep thinking I could do FIFO for 2 or 3 years, absolutely stack money and come out way ahead financially.

Anyone here taken the big FIFO money and actually regretted it?

I got pulled into a meeting with our director and HR this week and was basically told they're planning to replace my manager.

He has no idea.

They asked if I'd be interested in his position and said they would rather promote internally than bring someone new in. It would take me from $78k to around $112k and would probably be the biggest career jump I've had.

The problem is my boss is the whole reason I'm even in this position. He hired me when I didn't have much experience, pushed for my last raise and has backed me up multiple times when things went wrong.

HR specifically told me not to discuss the conversation with him because nothing has been formally announced yet.

Now I'm sitting across from this guy in meetings every day while he's talking about plans for the next quarter and I already know there's a decent chance he won't even be here for them.

Would taking the job be normal career self preservation or am I basically helping them push out the person who helped build my career?

My husband currently makes $120k working fully remote with full benefits. His job is comfortable, has good work-life balance, and being remote means he can help with school drop-offs, see the kids throughout the day, and generally be much more present with our family.
He was recently approached by the owner of a company about becoming a Director. The position would be in NYC, about a 1 hour 15 minute commute each way from NJ by bus, and would come with significantly more responsibility. Salary is $200,000 plus a 5% equity after 3 years. At office 5 days a week.
He wasn’t actively looking to leave his current job, so we’re trying to figure out if the salary would actually make giving up the remote lifestyle worthwhile.
A five-day commute would mean roughly 12+ hours a week just commuting, plus transportation costs, NYC work expenses, less flexibility with the kids, and obviously more stress/responsibility at a director level.
Is leaving a comfortable job worth it for a high paying job?

For all you nay sayers out there: they weren't upset at all! They approved my $32 an hour up from $30 an hour no problem. I just signed the agreement today!

That might just be the difference between nonprofit/service work and all other industries. I don't know for sure, but my start date is October 1st!

I have a team mate. We are devs. The project we are on is high profile and extremely stressful. A couple of months ago, my teammate and I got on a 1:1 call to debug something. I’m asking him basic debugging questions so I can understand the problem and he gets angry about it. To the point where I felt the situation needed to be diffused so I said I was asking so I could get caught up to where he was on the problem because I’m trying to help you. This calmed him down slightly but later on the call something came up about the project that sent him into a raging tirade. I was floored someone would act this way at work. It was like 10-15 minutes of him ranting non stop. After that I told my team lead what happened and that it was unprofessional and he needed to treat me respectfully going forward.

There have been multiple other small instances of issues that have come up since then where he’s been rude and belittling and unhelpful. I mostly let it roll off and pushed back when he was rude. These were annoying but not anything as a woman dev I’ve never experienced before and not directly impacting the work.

Last week we were on a call to merge some work and he absolutely lost his shit again but much worse this time. He was full on raging about everything and I kept saying I need to go and he’d say “ok ya we should go” then launch into another rage. I tried diffusing it or redirecting him but it was not possible and tbh, he was so angry I felt like if I hung up that would make his rage even worse.

This week I’ve been obviously reluctant to get on any 1:1 call with him and this is not good for team collaboration or efficiency as you can imagine. I’m now the team lead so I need to be able to interact with him. Furthermore, as I’ve started to take on more of a leadership role I’m noticing more instances of dismissal of me and ignoring my requests.

He never loses his temper when anyone else is present. He also never loses his temper on anyone else. It’s also worth noting that I’m a woman and while there are other women on the team they are the team leadership.

I told my team lead and sent her some screenshots of his slack messages. She reached out to the project EM who spoke with me this morning. She said since no one has had a direct conversation with him we have to do that first. Also she said I should record or transcribe any 1:1 call I have with him. That’s pretty much it.

I told her I did not want to ever be in a 1:1 call with him ever again during the call and that his treatment of me wasn’t only a problem of unprofessional behavior that affected me personally it was also affecting team collaboration and efficiency. I described his behavior as hostile and aggressive.

She sent me a message after she met with him that he was “unaware he was making me uncomfortable.” He definitely knew I wasn’t comfortable because he would intermittently apologize during his rants then keep on going. And he definitely knows this is not acceptable behavior and he can control it. If he didn’t and he couldn’t he wouldn’t wait until we were on a 1:1 call to unleash it. Or send it as back channel slack messages.

Despite this it seems that they still expect me to get on 1:1 calls with him and they won’t remove him from the team, no plans for EAP referral or anything else.

What do I do next?

im a senior in college and im already regretting every choice ive made the past four years. for the past year or so, i realized i’ve never been interested in any kind of career path. i only chose this major because i had no idea what to do and i had no real guidance. i feel like im wasting my time and not learning anything. last semester i started getting into marketing + business + networking because thats what i was told to do, and i just do not like it much. i stick with it for the “connections” but i dont really care. as for interests, my school schedule doesn’t give me much room to do more electives. i’m so scared of graduating in this awful job market. i have no internships, no clear goals, and i cant switch my major. i know it isn’t the end of the world but still.

i tried taking online tests, going to career counselors, asking people, and thinking about my preferences, but nothing is clicking. i know for a fact i refuse to do anything with trades, healthcare, sales, hr, any service/assistance roles, or anything that is too micromanaging. ideally, i would like something that gives me a bit more flexibility and pays well.

New grad working my first full-time position. I'm an engineer for a fortune 50 company. I work on a fairly small team (<10 people) and do time sensitive work that is relevant to national security. I knew going into the job that occasional OT and odd hours would be expected. Thankfully, overtime is paid (I'm salary, so it's my "hourly" rate + $x.xx/hr)

Today, I got a work phone. At first, I was excited to feel important but then I realized that comes with the expectation of replying to urgent messages at odd hours (basically the whole reason why I have the phone). I'm currently in a long distance relationship, don't have much going on outside work, and have big career aspirations so I'm okay sacrificing some of my time right now to get ahead. However, I don't want to be the person who is constantly "on the clock" and end up completely missing out on my 20s.

That being said, how do I balance my career goals and "go get em" attitude with still having a life outside of work? I know early career habits and boundaries are important to establish because they set expectations.

Hello everybody, I just need a little bit of guidance because I am having second thoughts about my career. My partner and I just moved out of state for a job offer for him. I applied as an accounting specialist at a smallish business. I got the job offer today. The pay is decent and has good benefits. But I’m struggling with whether or not I want to continue the accounting career path. My last position I was a revenue auditor for a casino. I don’t want to say I disliked it because it wasn’t terrible all the time but I was super busy and started to bring work home with me. Meaning I would stay up super late thinking about what ifs or I missed something. The stress was becoming so overwhelming.. I started dreaming about my job and waking up panicking about things I may have messed up. I don’t want that to happen again and/or ruin my mental health. My partner can afford our life by himself but I don’t like to be provided for completely so I said I would at least get a part time job. I’m really struggling on what I should do.. any advice to help make the decision easier? Should I accept the job offer since it could be totally different than my last position or look for something maybe I would love to do?

I'm Burmese currently working one of the EMS companies in Thailand. My position is QC and Japanese-speaking is required for my job. But, I don't really do full-time QC work. Since our customers are Japanese and my main part is supporting as an translator. The difficult part is that i have to communicate between Japanese customer and my Thai coworkers. My coworkers are not very comfortable with English and my Thai-speaking is still limited! I'm not blaming them at all. I understand that English is not their native language and mine is not perfect either! During meetings, i often have to translate from Japanese from Thai or English. Sometimes, I hv to use simple Thai or broken English just to make sure everyone understands. Honestly, I've been exhausting as hell especially when the discussion involves technical or quality-related issues.

After doing this job about a year, I'm starting to feel lost. I don't know whether I should focus on learning Thai until i can speak fluently and continue developing my current career, or prepare to move into a completely different field.

I'm currently studying CS at UOP cuz I'm planning to work as software engineer or another IT-related field. However, I also need a company that can support my visa and work permit in Thailand. So, I can't simply quit my current job and start over without a realistic plan!

So should i improve my Thai and stay in my current role or focus on preparing for a new career? After graduating, how realistic is it for a foreign junior to find a job with visa support in Thailand

I recently just accepted an offer at a firm.

I asked for a week to decide but got some additional pressure (slight hostile tone) to accept so I signed that very night.

The very next morning I got an offer from a bigger company with a better pay…

Any suggestions on how I should go about this? Wait a couple days then tell them “Thank you for your time but…. blah blah blah”

I finished my masters two years ago and took a job that was supposed to be temporary while I looked for something better. The pay is okay and my manager is decent, but the work itself is stuff I could have done straight out of undergrad. I spend most days doing basic admin tasks and attending meetings where I just nod along.

The problem is I've gotten comfortable. The job is easy, low stress, and I can basically coast. But I feel like my skills are atrophying and when I look at job postings in my field now, I worry that the gap between what I'm doing and what I should be doing is getting too wide. I've tried bringing up more complex projects to my manager but she says the team structure doesn't really allow for it right now.

Part of me wants to just start applying elsewhere, but another part of me feels like I'm being whiny or entitled. Like, people would kill for a stable job where they're not burnt out, right? But I also didn't get a graduate degree to spend my days reformatting spreadsheets and scheduling conference rooms. When I talk to friends about it they either say I'm lucky to have it easy or that I should have left ages ago.

Does anyone else feel stuck like this? How do you know when it's actually time to move on versus just being impatient? I don't want to make a dumb decision but I also don't want to wake up in five years and realize I've wasted my twenties being comfortable.

I’m a 23 year old Canadian woman with absolutely no skills (or so I feel like, anyways). I grew up in a bad situation and didn’t do well in school, especially with math. Now I’m 23 and I have no idea what to do. I’ve unfortunately had chronic pain for years and still trying to get a real diagnosis and I’m usually an artsy person but in this economy, anything art feels like a dead end. (Sorry if that’s considered a ‘sob story’, first time posting here and just trying to explain the situation 😅)

I’m interested in trades to be honest but I don’t think I’m smart enough for any of them. I worked at a movie theatre for 3 years but that’s about it and felt like I gained nothing out of it.

Any suggestions are welcome, even if they’re a bit abnormal.

I'm 23 and recently did my BS with Major in Econ and minor in maths & data analytics. My ideal role would've been something related to data (a somewhat specialised field ). During my uni, I did a partime project coordinator job with a global NGO for 2 years, and after graduating I started as an Executive financial coordinator, reporting directly to the cfo, at a really good top company in my city- which I believed would expose me to real world financial processes. Problem is, in my first month all I have done is set up meetings, reply to emails, make presentations (very basic), and get docs approved- essentially having nothing to do for 95% of my day, and even tho, in a few months (or years), I might be able to learn how they work and how they are shifting to an ERP based SAP system; I perosnally will not be getting any practical experience and will only ever be a bystander.

I wish to get a data analytics role- or atleast something more technical, cuz at this point in my career my first priority is to learn and develop skills that would make me a highly valuable asset a couple of years down the line.

The work I am doing right now is entirely administrative, and Im afraid this will move my career trajectory towards similar roles- leaving me feeling listless and useless ( as I currently do).

I am adept in SQL, Python, power BI, R studio, Excel, and the things needed for my current job can be fulfiled without a specialised degree, or set of skills.

I will also be applying for a masters based on my job experience, and I was leaning more towrads the analysis side.

What I want to know is:

1. Could anyone tell me if I am just being impatient, or am I wasting my time at a job which I am highly overqualified for?
2. What does an entry level data analyst position look like?
3. Do all entry level jobs make you feel this inapt?

At the momemt, I feel like I am highly replaceable and bring nothing special to the table; which could be understandable with my experience level, but this job makes me dread of life of feeling no sense of accomplishment and instead standing stagnant and providing no meaning to anything.

I interviewed for a BI Analyst role at a global technology distributor and supply chain services company and received an offer letter from them today. To my surprise the job title on the letter is 'Professional – Sales Excellence' which is slightly misleading for me as the JD never mentioned this title and it was advertised as a BI Analyst role. Since this role is for a Sales team, they have given it a sales based title. I asked the HR to correct it or give me another letter which states that my job responsibility is analytics based. I am concerned that if in future I apply to a different role, this sales job title would come across completely different from my job trajectory which has been analyst and reporting based roles.

Is it a fair thing to ask the HR to update my offer letter or mention officially on a letter that my job responsibilities remain as per the JD ?

HR has refused to share a different letter or include job responsibilities in the offer letter which is a cause of concern for me.

PS- This role is based in India and since I am moving back to India from the UK and hold no other offers at the moment, I am concerned to let go off this offer.

I work at company A for 1 and a half years. It is my first job and it is in tech.
We have the biggest competitor, company B, in our market, and the HR messaged me on Linkedin to ask me to meet because they are searching for someone like my position.
It is a large company regionally, much larger than the one I work for, but my company is larger internationally. Here i work with a small team of 8 people and there it would be a much larger team.
I dont know if i should go to the interview, mostly because it is a smaller market and im afraid someone from my company will find out, and they will consider me as a risk and wont invest that much more in me.
However, if company B were to offer me a much larger salary, I would maybe take the risk because I am not that pleased with my salary (even though it is fine for my market and I only work here less than 2 years).

I am in a huge dilemma. I am pretty happy where I am, but i dont know if I would regret not going, or not liking the offer and someone from my company finds out.

What to do?

So I’m 26 years old. I graduated from Rutgers with a bachelor’s degree in political science as well as journalism. (3.9 GPA). I never did anything with those degrees, but it was what I loved learning about and I excelled at both. (Ignorant choices were made to not pursue it, I know. :/ but I felt lost after graduating. Neither field is very open to newcomers and I didn’t want to be a “journalist” per se).

After college I spent 2 years doing sales and I was really good at it but there was no growth for me and it was a devastatingly toxic workplace.

After I quit that job, I’ve been living off of my savings and my childhood collectibles that I’ve been selling slowly to pay my bills. It’s been 2 years of being unemployed and bills are starting to catch up to me.

I know I’m young enough to still make the right choices and build a career for myself, but I also feel like I’m far behind where I should have been.

I don’t know where to look for work, I don’t know what jobs to look for, and I don’t even know what I want to do. I’m hesitant to apply for physical labor as I have medical issues that limit me. I really want to do something that I feel has purpose. I love giving back and feeling like I’m helping people in some way.

I am in my mid-30s and worked as an aviation mechanic. I enjoy this, but there is a physical limit to blue-collar work. My family of origin does not have anyone with a bachelor's degree. I had no guidance when I was younger, so I joined the military, and now I have a full GI Bill. I have an associate's degree in general studies. How do I know what the next step is from here? I know several people who earned a bachelor's degree that never turned into a job.

I have been at the same company for 5 years and the same role for 3.5 years. I love my company the culture is excellent it's wfh and they put their people first. I took an 18 month maternity leave (i'm in Canada so this is common) and have been back to work for over a year. Since i came back i have been wanting to change roles and an opportunity came up for an internal role that pays 30k more than what I am making now. It is also a more senior role with a better title that could open up a lot more opportunities for me in the future. I did the interview and the hiring manager booked a half an hour call with me today to give me an update (this is a good sign).

I found out i was pregnant a few weeks before the interview. I haven't disclosed this information to my current manager or the hiring manager and I have been on a sick leave the last 3 weeks due to severe nausea and vomiting. I'm almost in my second trimester and feeling a lot better so i was planning to go back to work in two weeks. Now i'm feeling guilty on whether i should disclose my pregnancy. Like i said I love my workplace and i would feel guilty leaving the role in 6 months time. I wouldn't want them to feel negativity towards me. My workplace doesnt have a requirement to disclose your pregnant until 4 weeks before you plan to take maternity leave so I know i don't have to tell them. I worry if I tell them i would be putting my own career at risk. i worked really hard this last year since i've been back from maternity leave to create an impact so i do think i deserve the role (if they feel the same way). I really wanted to make a role change before going on another maternity leave to set myself up for success when i return. otherwise it looks like I have been in the same entry level role for 5+ years. i'm really conflicted here on what I should do. I know I haven't gotten the role yet but the reason i'm asking is because i'm not sure if I should tell them before accepting the offer.

and if i don't get the role that's completely fine too please don't tell me im getting ahead of myself because i like to be prepared for all scenarios. im just really looking for advice from a manager maybe whose seen this happen in the past or someone who has been through this as well.

I (25F) have a great job - I make $110k per year, my job is very easy, I work 3 days in person. It’s everything I wanted for so long- but I’ve always wanted to go on a backpacking trip through SE Asia. I visited a psychic with my friend recently who told me I should do this trip because if I don’t I will spend the rest of my life thinking about it. I know this will only get harder to do, but I’m worried I’m going to make a mistake leaving my job.

I don’t especially enjoy the job - I know I am smart and I feel like it is not challenging enough for me, but I love my boss. I also have been wanting to move out of the city I live in fora long time.

I almost feel like this could allow me to do some self reflection on my true calling career wise as well as get the adventure bug out I’ve been dying to experience. I know I want to get away from corporate & become an entrepreneur… but I’m worried life will only get harder with marriage, kids, mortgages, etc and I almost feel like this is the best/only time in my life to do it- especially while I am already craving a change. What do you think?

I also don’t know if I should wait until March if I do decide to quit for bonus season. If I do this I miss the best time of year to travel through Asia but I would miss out on an easy $15k after taxes.

Ive had a really traumatic life i wont get into it but even though ive had loving and financially stable parents i wasnt able to get the proper push and discipline i needed as a kid. My mother was terminally ill and passed away when i was 16. Its no excuse for me throwing away my life but you know.

I am able to do hard things when i need to, ive taken ap classes (got bad grades B’s and C’s) but got my things together when ap exams started and studied very hard. ( and passed every one ) I have some problem with discipline here and there but i think its getting better.

My problem is I have no skills, no idea what i want to do in life, and extreme stress about it all.

I want to make money but i also wanna enjoy life along the way and delve into my hobbies. Right now im trying to do all of these things

Hi, I've started a new job almost 3 months ago. It's an IT Service Desk position, so nothing crazy, but there are 3 different shifts and a lot of different projects in which we have to do various small things.

To give you some details, we have two stations here at work, the first one is more active during the day, but I've more or less managed to learn it. I mostly have to handle some tickets or call to certain locations.

The second station is the one I have difficulty with. During the day, barely anything happens there, but at night we have to handle two different ticketing systems on top of that we do during the day. I find them difficult to use, they load very long and the UI is a mess. Additionally the only "guide" I have for it, is a Google doc which is terrible formatted and doesn't have every ticket type described.

I'm trying to figure it out, but it takes me forever. The guy who's teaching me it, kinda doesn't care and gives me an impression I should be doing it a few times faster—like him.

Whats worse, I still don't have an actual access to those things, because someone is f*cking it up more and more, so I'm using colleagues account. This whole situation feels very stressful to me even though I know It's not my fault.

What can I do to not feel so bad? I searched for a job for a very long time and this one allowed me to actually move to the city.

Hello. I just recently resigned from my previous work and employer coz I was hired to another company but apparently it's for a night shift achedule. The night differential was not mentioned to me during the process and I relly thought that I will be working on a morning shift.

I have hypertension and already on a maintenance -- I got my FTW and yes, the salary is good and even the benefits -- but my health is my priority.

Anyone else who manage to transition on this? What did you do?

I’m about a month into a new job as a Solutions Engineer, and honestly, the experience has been pretty rough so far.

At my previous company, I had been there long enough to become one of the go-to people on the team. I was technically still a junior, but I was the senior person in my batch and had built up a lot of knowledge of the product.

If something wasn’t working, people would usually come to me before escalating it to Engineering. I handled a lot of troubleshooting, implementations, and client-facing situations, and I was often trusted to take ownership of things.

I eventually left because I felt like I had hit a ceiling in terms of opportunities and compensation.

I joined a new company expecting to learn, grow, and obviously go through a learning curve. I knew I wasn't going to be the guy who knew everything on day one.

But I didn't expect the transition to feel this brutal.

I've been put onto a fairly large project very early on. There was training, but honestly, it wasn't enough. There were quite a few things that weren't covered, and now I'm expected to work with the platform and project as if I already have that context.

The hardest part is the communication from the leads.

They'll sometimes say things like:

“Why are you doing it this way?”

“You shouldn't be wasting time on this.”

“Just do X, then Y, then Z.”

And I'm sitting there thinking... I genuinely don't know what X, Y and Z mean in the context of this system yet. 😅

It's not that I don't want to learn. I actually want to learn very badly. It's just that there's a huge amount of internal terminology, product knowledge, previous project context, and little things that apparently everyone else already knows.

I also feel like I'm going from being someone who was trusted to solve problems independently to someone who constantly has to ask questions.

And that's messing with my confidence more than I expected.

I'm trying not to compare myself to people who have been there much longer, but it's difficult. At my old company, I was the person people came to when they were stuck. Here, I'm the person who's being told I'm doing things wrong.

I know logically that being new means I won't know everything. But emotionally, it's hard to reconcile that with the fact that I know I was actually pretty good at my previous job.

So I'm curious about people who've gone through something similar:

I'm trying to figure out whether I just need to suck it up and push through the learning curve, or whether this is a sign that the environment itself isn't a good fit.

Long story short, I have two bachelors degrees (public relations and digital technology) and recently took on an administrative assistant role at a tech company in seattle. It's through an agency and pays $25 an hour with no possibility for conversion.

At first I thought this job would be a good entry level role to get my foot in the door but it's not at all what I expected. I spend most of my day on my feet stocking fridges, pantries, bathrooms (lots of free stuff) cross three floors while also being expected to do administrative work.

3 weeks into the job the office manager is about to go pn vacation for 2 entire weeks and expects me to take over for her despite me only being there 3 weeks.

I keep feeling really anxious because she keeps telling me how worried she is about leaving me alone. Im trying my best to learn everything I can but feel like im jusf getting the hang of my assistant role and much less the office managers role.

Today she said she was going to come in late so she could leave me alone to see how I handled things on my own.

An employee didn't have badge access for the elevators this morning so I gave him a temporary badge and reached out to security who told me to notify the building manager. Then 2 more employees had the same issue. I followed the same process and expedited things with the building. Long story short, the building managers had done an audit of badges which affected access for some employees but we were able to get them new badges right away.

When my manager came in before lunch, she was furious. Despite me having taken care of the badge issue and running around like crazy trying to stock and clean all three floors, she was mad that I didnt notify her while she was out and also was upset that in the midst of the chaos, i didnt fill the snacks on the main floor. She was especially upset about the badge issue because even though I was able to get it resolved, she said I dont have enough experience to be handling those issues.

On top of that, we had a large shipment from Costco that I had to take care of. I told her I had handled it and I thought id let her know once she comes in. Plus, I told her everything I had to do from the Costco delivery, to setting out breakfast, cleaning, stocking, etc.

I spoke about this with my agency who advised me to suggest to her that the company hire a dedicated facilties person to do the stocking and cleaning.

I brought up this suggestion and told her that way I could focus more on the administrative side of things especially when she's gone. She laughed at me and said, "that's why I have you here".

Later, I noticed a spilll outside the main entrance and asked her if I should contact the building's janitorial service but she told me no. She said there's a mop and bucket in the kitchen and that I could clean it up myself.

Im rarely ever at the desk, and when I am, she gets upset and implies I should be up and doing something like cleaning.

I feel like this job is mostly facilities work despite the title. Her lack of faith in me, the expectations, and especially her laughing at me today have all severely been affecting my mental health.

My agency plans to talk to the company on Thursday to see if they have another role better suited to my skills and said they're already looking for other placements outside of the company as well.

I just feel bad if I were to leave because she's going on vacation and there would be no one else to cover. At the same time, I'm really struggling to the point of crying almost daily and feeling like a servant.

Im torn between leaving as soon as my agency gets back to me on Thursday (they told me to keep my head down and keep working in the meantime) or sticking things out until my manager gets back.

For reference, I graduated in 2021 and have worked in marketing and Healthcare. I took this job since I recently relocated back to the seattle area from California to be closer to family.
