It’s clear players are gaining the upper hand with contracts and trade requests etc. I’m curious though because if the player wanted to help the team they would keep it quiet so the GM can find best option - they pretty well lose all leverage when it’s made public they want out. Though most teams can put two and two together the confirmation will certainly only hurt the team. Only thing I can think of them doing this (making it public) is to put more pressure on their GM or to try and own the press narrative about why they want to leave etc. what do you all think?

Gretzky has 2857 total points in 1487 games, plus 382 points in 208 playoff games in 21 seasons, playing until age 38.

McDavid is at 794 games and 1220 points. 102 playoff games and 156 points in 11 seasons at age 29.

McDavid needs 209 points to get to half of Gretzky's total, which will take him 1.5 seasons at last year's 138 point pace. He'd be at 1520 points heading into his 14th season at age 31. He would now need 1338 points.

Let's say his true prime lasts for 6 more years, and he is able to rack up 150 points (best season was 153 points), that's 900, so 438 left at age 37. Assuming better sports medicine actually make an impact, he can play until at least age 42. So 5 seasons left at age 37, 24 total seasons. Chelios and Howe played 26 seasons, so it is well within the realm of possibilities, it all depends how healthy and effective McDavid can stay, and how he can change his game as he slows down. You'd think at some point as his salary dwindles, he'll be able to facilitate some really good scorers and keep racking up assists.

At this point he would need 88 points a season for his final 5 seasons, which is right around 60% of his peak season total (We don't know if he has another peak yet, he is still hungry as ever losing 2 Stanley cups and coming off a Olympic loss).

Ovechkin is playing his 21st season and in his last two years he's had about 60% of the points he had in his best season. 60% for McDavid's best season is 92 points. It's very very possible because you don't need to have McDavid produce numbers he hasn't already, you just need him to stay consistent, uninjured, and ready to play until age 42. He's an assist king, just like Gretz.

If you're adding in playoff points to the totals it starts to get incredibly interesting. McDavid needs 226 more playoff points which will be a little under 150 games considering his PPG. This is about 25 playoff series if each series lasts 6 games. Considering he is still hungry for a cup, playing until 42, and will not waste time on a non-playoff team but still misses the playoffs twice, you can guarantee 1 series in 11 seasons, leaving us with 14 series needed. Let's say he gets to the second round in 6 of those, that leaves us with 5 needed. Let's say he makes it to the conference finals 3 times, that is 2 needed, and finally let's assume he loses 1 more cup and finally wins the cup. There we go. I think it's plausible to say he will at least come within 10% of playoff games played as Wayne especially seeing he has the ball rolling in the postseason.

If we want to be generous, let's say he makes the playoffs every year, wins 10 of the first round series, makes it to 7 conference finals, and 4 more stanley cups... that's 34 series, about 204 games, and 312 points on top of his current 156.

I think he realistically can pass Gretzky in playoff points, especially because he hasn't won a cup yet but has been to 3 conference finals and 2 cup finals somewhat recently. If you're adding playoff points to the race, then McDavid may have a slight edge if he can play 13 more seasons. It's possible, it really is.

This was all due to the question going around about the most unbeatable record in sports. The biggest issue is going to be production issues in later years, but who knows how the game will look in 10 years. What do you think?
