Travel My visiting mother's favorite place in the Gold Coast

My mom (who, for context, grew up in the middle-east until her mid-20s, in a village of Latin America until her 50s and in a big city in the US over the last 20 years) came to visit a couple of years ago.

Her favourite place, Surfers. She said she would love to move there into a high rise.

Favourite shop, Gold Coast Discounters, across the street from the Condom shop where there's a guy on loud speakers is nonstop mentioning what clothes or souveniers are available for purchase. When I went to visit her last year, she asked me to go there and buy her a few things to bring with me.

Thought this sub would get a kick out of that.

Does anyone know what they use to clean the seat fabric on buses?

Hey just wondering if anyone knows. Yesterday I got on a bus that looked recently cleaned and sat down, didn't notice it was damp because of how cold it was (very early morning) and when I got up an hour later I had a huge stain all over the back of my pants. It felt like conditioner so I'm pretty sure it's whatever they use to treat the seat fabric? It didn't dry from my pants the entire day so I think it was oil based or something, but when I went to change into spare scrubs the back of my bum and legs were totally stained the color of my scrubs from whatever it was. And a day later it's still super itchy and red so I think it's given me some sort of allergic reaction, so just wondering if anyone knows what they use on the seats? Thank you😭

Walking around Surfers Paradise at 3am.

The winter chill is still here. Streets are nice and quiet. It's such a lovely vibe. Few people out. Nighttime workers like the street cleaners or construction workers working.

Here's a few shots. 7/11 coffee photo was taken earlier though.

Travel Outlet stores in the Gold Coast

Hello everyone.
Just visiting the GC from nz and I was wondering if there are my good brand discount outlet stores (especially for men’s clothing).
The only shopping scene I’ve heard about is Robina and pac fair but it seems like they are very expensive.
Looking for something similar to harbour town

Travel My first day at Gold Coast

My first time in Gold Coast and it gives such an interesting weird vibe, like it’s a town from the past, buildings, shops are kinda old school. Almost ghost like feeling.

I have been living in Melbourne/Australia since 2019.

Divorce/housing

My wife has asked me for a divorce. Wondering how others have gone about finding cost effective housing that is child friendly (im the male) and 1000% want a safe space for my kids without bleeding out the budget. We currently own. 950k id say its worth with 450k mortage. One 4yo and one under 1. I would like 50/50 from the 4yo and as much time as logical with the under 1yo. Thanks everyone

Local Question Moving with family

Hi, my family and I may be relocating for work next year, I'd be required in Brisbane some days but WFH others. My wife is 100% WFH. School aged kids.Looking at the area around Worongary primarily but interested in locals thoughta or other suggestions. A budget of about 1.7m, hoping for a small bit of land but still somewhat close to amenities. Have even looked at places as far south as the border and as far north as Ormeau. Appreciate any input!

Local Question Removalist Recommendations

I’m moving from a 3 bedroom house in Southport to Varisty Lakes and need recommendations for movers.

The last ones I used were shocking, damaging some of our items and the house we moved out of.

Bonus points if they can pluck a large TV off the wall (I may have to get that sorted ahead of the move if not possible)

Local Question Has anyone complained highway noise to TMR and had them do something about it?

We just moved to a place next to a highway. The hooning and big trucks are driving me insane due to how loud they are. Unfortunately I can’t just pack up and end my lease, it took me forever to get a rental at all. I talked to some neighbors and they had the same issues but they said I’ll get used to it. 😭

Does anyone have any recruitment agencies they have worked with that they wold recommend?

I am am changing fields entirely so need some advice on how to transfer my skills. I have tried getting in touch with recruitment agents but hear nothing or have been told that they can't help because they only do specialised roles, not career changes.

Pizza By The Slice on GC?

My family want to do a Pizza Taste Test on Father's Day.

Ideally, somewhere that they sell pizza slices, so we can each try several flavours without having to pay for a FULL pizza.

A few google searches has shown up one place in Broady, so I thought I'd ask the hivemind here to see if there are any hidden secrets I'm yet to know about.

Any places on the GC that sell pizza by the slice that have a few toppings to choose from?

NYE for a 30-something

I’m looking to visit the Gold Coast and trying to book some accommodation for NYE. I’m interested in Burleigh Heads and keen to hear what kind of places I can find on a busy night like NYE.

My ideal is wine bars, cocktail bars and a good vibing crowd without the little teeny boppers and too much noise/strobing lights. Is Burleigh Heads the right place? I saw Burleigh Pavilion does a party but it’s so poorly reviewed.

We are (thankfully) at a stage in life where cheap drinks and shit food do nothing for us.

Moving up to the GC from Sydney

My wife and I and our two young kids (4 and 2) are moving to the Gold Coast from Sydney for work in January.

We are looking to base ourselves in Miami, Mermaid Waters, Burleigh, Palm Beach… We are going to be renting initially then will look to buy eventually. Looking to spend $1200-$1400 and happy with a townhouse to begin with.

Any tips on the rental situation up on the GC?

Does anybody know why the Tugun IGA smells so bad? Do the management and staff know that it absolutely reeks? There is a southerly this morning and I can smell the IGA from up near the vinnies. The smell is legit so feral I could smell it on the condensation of the cold water I bought there.

So I'm aware that there has been a proposal kicking around to do a cableway up to Springbrook, much like SkyRail in Cairns.

On the other hand, I know transport to the Spit remains an issue as well.

Anyway, with some free time on a Saturday arvo I came up with this.

I've been to a few places where they run a high clearance cableway over a body of water, like the one to Sentosa Island in Singapore or the one across the Thames in London (Which you can pay to use by tapping the same Oyster card as you do for other transport in London)

I did the one in Busan back in December 2024 and freezed my tits off.

I figure you could do a cableway on the Gold Coast, but put it in a better location, and have it connect to either of the main light rail stops in Southport. There would be a short covered walkway to the cableway terminal and then it would probably take about 5 minutes to go up and over the Broadwater to the Spit to terminal over there, and of course you could have a nice boardwalk linking up all the developments and Sea World, so this would be a quicker shortcut than going down around via a bus or a future tram line.

Some of these systems have fugly towers so I'd want to see a nice white one done like a ship mast. Much like the Sydney Harbors bridge, this could be the Gold Coast's "thing" and you could let off fireworks or lasers or whatever during special events, and even put a flare up there to hold one of the Olympic flames in 2032.

I fully expect some people to hate the idea, but IDK, I miss the days of the GC where there was just more random stuff to do, like the Nobbys chairlift etc.

No I'm not a property developer, I come up with stuff like this for fun.
