Spotted near Lucerne

Endingen and Lengnau are known for having had a significant jewish population and for being the only villages where Jews were allowed to live in Switzerland between 1776 and 1866. After being allowed to settle elsewhere, jewish residents progressively left for other cities, hence "historically". Both villages have a synagogue and Endingen doesn't have any other religious building.

The villages are known for their "double doors". Until 1776, Jews were not allowed to own property and therefore rented with Christians. However, since Jews and Christians were also not allowed to live together, the houses had two entrances for each.

Being interested in jewish history, I had heard of those villages since a long time ago, but never took the time to visit them until last Saturday (I live three and half hours away by public transportation).

I went by myself and it would have probably been better to visit in a guided tour. It is not possible to visit certain places by yourself. It felt kind of strange visiting these small villages who are not toursitic in any way. I felt like I stood out walking around. I also didn't take pictures of most double doors as those were people's house.

In both villages, there were signs with maps indicating the places to see. However, some of them had been demolished. I couldn't find the Matzenbäckerei (matzo bakery) and found an article online about how it had been demolished in 2013. I also didn't find the Spital/Armenhaus and there was a construction site where it seemed to be indicated on the map, though I may have looked at the wrong place.

Some facts about Switzerland foreigners do not believe until they come here.

I was in Switzerland for 9 nights. 3 nights each in Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zurich.

Before travelling I had done all my research on the internet about all its tourist places and also collected Swiss pass for unlimited travel access.

The first on my itenary was Stanserhorn, a place truly worth calling heaven on earth. So we all know how punctual the Swiss people are and their trains are never a second late.

I was waiting for a train to take me from Lucerne to Stans and as I said earlier the train was right on time. As me , my wife and my 6 year old boy settled in our seats, we heard a announcement being made in German language. I was talking to my wife about what it could be, a middle-aged lady apologized for interrupting and told us that the announcement was about the train running a minute late and that one minute will be taken cared of.

We couldn't believe this. Weren't they just a minute late.

That lady then politely inquired about our itenary and suggested a few places we shouldn't miss.

So the facts here not to believe are plenty. Like it's truly heaven on earth, the Swiss people go out of their way to help if you are lost or in other words they are happy to help you with your problem. The food is great, the weather awesome and the scenery is heavenly.

Can't wait to visit this magical place again!

Magnifique visite de Kandersteg (Première photo) et du Blausee. C’est vraiment magnifique comme paysage et je pense que tous le monde doit y aller au moins une fois dans sa vie (N’hésitez pas à prendre beaucoup à boire et des grilles sont à disposition avec une magnifique vue sur le lac.

N’hésitez pas non plus à prendre un maillot de bain.

Switzerland truly is God's own country. This click was taken on the last day of my trip. We had ice cream by the fountain and then spent some time feeding the goats. We were really sad, that our trip was ending. But I also promised them that I will take them on a holiday again to this magical country.
