In my opinion. It kinda of a downgrade

For reasons only known to those with an unhealthy infatuation with statistical facts and oddities, I sought to determine the greatest offensive season in NHL history that went by without any official accolades or recognition. So, that meant no individual trophies, no All-Star game appearance, no end-of-season All-Star team selection, and no votes for any of the individual trophies. This took more time than I was initially expecting, trawling through the stats page of NHL.com and cross-referencing with hockey-reference for voting results/accolades.

But, it would seem I've come up with the answer: Mats Sundin in 1992-93, with 114 points in 80 games. I was actually half-expecting it to show up in this particular season, rife as it was with offensive dominance. He finished 11th in league scoring and 1st on the Nordiques, pacing Sakic by 9 points. This was the season he recorded his incredible 30-game point streak, the longest ever by someone other than Lemieux or Gretzky.

Digging into things a little, perhaps it's no surprise he didn't make the All-Star game. He had 69 points in 51 games up to that point, which was admittedly an amazing total, but 20th in the league then, and essentially identical to Sakic's numbers (68 points in 48 games), who was the more established star at the time.

Perhaps more curiously, he received no end-of-season All-Star votes. Seven centremen received votes (in descending order): Lemieux, LaFontaine, Gilmour, Oates, Yzerman, Turgeon, and Ricci. Lemieux swept the board with first-place votes, which was a given after his legendary season, but Sundin's own teammate Ricci received a solitary third-place vote. Ricci finished 4th on the Nordiques with 78 points in 77 games, behind Steve Duchesne, Sakic, and Sundin. It turned out to be the greatest season of Ricci's long career, but it's odd to me that he, the third-line centre, received an All-Star vote ahead of both Sakic and Sundin.

Honourable mentions for unrewarded seasons also go to Dale Hawerchuk in 1983-84 with 102 points for the Jets in 80 games, and Rick MacLeish in 1972-73 with 100 points for the Flyers in 78 games.

This list differs from Wheeler and Pronman’s own prospects rankings in that it’s only about predicting and projecting their rookie seasons, and not their careers. While the players’ profiles remain an obvious factor, external factors — potential linemates, power-play opportunities, roles, usage, etc. — are also uniquely relevant in handicapping the Calder Trophy race.

This ranking is also designed as a bit of a tutor for fantasy hockey managers, ideally helping to fill in the gaps that Dom Luszczyszyn and Shayna Goldman’s fantasy projections find difficult to model for new players.

Among the potential rookies we discussed but didn’t make our top 20 were defensemen Tristan Luneau, Theo Lindstein, Luca Cagnoni and Ryan Ufko, forward Victor Eklund, and camp wild-cards like Nikita Klepov, Caleb Desnoyers and Trevor Connelly.

Note: The NHL’s Calder Trophy criteria for rookie status says that “a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons” and “must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept. 15 of the season in which he is eligible.”
