How does the greatest player of his generation have such mid numbers for his number one line? 

I have been looking at lines, and the Oilers have struck me as bizarre. They use so many line combos and then the ones they use the most don’t always have good numbers.

For example, McDavid’s highest ice-time line (397 minutes) is Hyman McDavid Nugent-Hopkins and they were under water at 48.9% goals for percentage, 23 goals scored and gave up 24. Goals per 60 was 3.48.

This 48.9% is 21^st in the NHL for all lines with as many or more minutes on the ice.  Marchment Fantilli Marchenko and Slafkovsky Suzuki Caufield were first and second with 70.6% and 70.2% respectively.

And this isn’t a new thing.  In 24/25 this same Hyman McDavid Nugent-Hopkins line was McDavid’s highest ice-time line and they were a middling 52% which was even lower at 24^th place compared to 25/26 at 21^st best.

You have to go back to 23/24 and 22/23 for this same line - four years in a row McDavid’s highest time on ice line – to be over 60%.  In 23/24 it was 63%, which was good for third, and was 61.5%, good for 23^rd best in 22/23.

Again, how does the greatest player of his generation have such mid numbers for his number one line?  49%, 52%, 63%, 62% - are these the numbers for a generational center?

I’m thinking Oilers aren’t very good overall in talent and in management/coaching and their success has been due solely to having two incredibly elite players.

I think we’re going to start seeing a pretty common development path for American prospects that basically didn’t exist before.

Something like NTDP -> CHL -> NCAA

Carter Meyer might be the first really high-end/top prospect to take this route, but I seriously doubt he’ll be the last.

The CHL/NCAA eligibility changes basically opened up a completely new option for American kids. They can get the higher-level junior experience in the CHL at 17, then still go the college route afterward instead of having to choose between the two at 16-17.

It actually seems like a pretty ideal development path for certain players. Get NTDP/USHL experience early, spend a year in the CHL playing against older and stronger players, then head to the NCAA when you're physically and developmentally more ready.

Obviously not every prospect is going to benefit from this, and some will still be better off staying in the NTDP/USHL or going straight NCAA. But I could see this becoming a very normal path for American prospects over the next few years.

Curious if others see this becoming a trend too, or if Meyer is more of an exception.

After the Stars announced they were leaving Victory+ yesterday some people were wondering if the WHL would continue streaming on the platform this season, it looks like we have our answer.

First off- I love Makar. He's the best defenseman in the world and he deserves every penny that he was offered- so this is not a slight against him. I'm in favor of players getting every dollar they can while they can get it.

I just think we've seen guys like Carlsson and Robertson get a TON of flack for their contract situations in recent months when the boat they're in isn't any different.

Example: Marek on Makar-

"I LOVE the Makar deal.

One of the things that happened in the NHL after the
PA caved to a cap in ‘05 was players seemed to think it was their job to manage it. Or perhaps they got convinced that they should.

A player is not a GM, it’s not his job to manage the cap."

Contrast that with the way he handled the Robertson negotiations, and it's night and day...

Players shouldn't be disparaged for looking out for themselves period- and it irks me even more when there's double standards.
