My family owns a kfc - we often would throw an extra chicken tender and like a few extra whole wings in buckets we sold, particularly close to closing. People LOVED when we did it.

Thats so true. I have a vivid memory of walking to a dunkin donuts with my cousins when we were maybe 10. My cousins all got a donut, but I didnt have any money to buy anything. When the worker asked what I wanted, I declined and told her I didnt have any cash. She smiled and gave me a donut anyway.
It was a 90 cent donut but a core memory for me that I still remember and occasionally think about nearly 30 years later. Wild how such a small gesture can have such an impact on someone.

There is an unimportant little lesson on how the french pronounce some letters and how the rest of the world finally understood how to pronounce them that I wish I still could point people to, because it's so interesting.
I first heard about it when we had to learn how to form our mouths to say the letter "K" in french. For years the best Americans could say was close to "Koo", but the reality was "Key" while making an "OOH" mouth. I'm sure I'm butchering it but it was fascinating to me how mouths and words are formed.

Looked into the word and holy shit, its etymology is Quechua and not French.
That's a language with a strange sort of beauty and simplicity, for example the word for "baby" is "guagua" (pronounced "wah wah").
Felt a strange sort of connection to "lagniappe" once I realized that (I spent years around Quechua).

My Popeyes used to fill that chicken box right up with tenders and fries and it would fill me up.
Now the Popeyes has new owners and they give little pieces and call it a full tender. The box is like 1/3rd the weight of what I use to get late at night.
They also fired all the old staff. They all had to be interviewed about missing money and was trying to set a “baseline for trust” they fired anybody who admitted to sometimes eating on the job.

I had a similar situation with Wendy's. There was one I could walk to in 6 minutes, but I'd always drive 10 minutes to the next closest one because the difference in quality is astounding. No surprise that the one super close to me closed down for good earlier this year.

Worked at a KFC/Taco Bell waaaaay back in the day. Would do that too. It was gonna get tossed anyway, so why not? Sometimes we would give entire extra buckets if it was mere minutes away from closing, because we didn't wanna bother with trying to throw it away. We'd also get extra generous with the ingredients in the Taco Bell side, and even give extra items like Taco Bell versions of the KFC items (Famous Bowl but as a burrito was a cool secret menu item we would do, but back then it was known as a Mash Bowl. So we named the secret item a Mashitto, for example) because it saved us a LOT of time on cleanup
Made customers happy, saved us cleanup time, and helped encourage repeat customers. Just a win all around

When i was in college my friend worked in the cafe and wed regularly go see him at closing, buy a drink and hed throw in a bunch of the food that had to get thrown out. We often didnt even have college that day but went for the food and paid him back in a after shift smoke.
He did it with all customers around 30 minutes to an hour before he closed.

I spent a year working at McDonald’s. Salt dispenser for the fries was this plastic cone that kinda looked like a bird seed feeder. You’d turn it upside down and it would drop salt but quickly clog, putting the “perfect” amount of salt on every time.
Well… I slightly spun it every time I made the fries, making it dispense roughly 25% more salt.
Idk how many people would say “this McDonald’s fries are the best. You’re not afraid to salt them!”
One day my manager saw me and told me to stop. Was very adamant that if someone saw that, we’d both get fired.
Few people made some comments about them not seeming as good anymore. He kept me on the register after that. He knew I wanted to give it that extra spin. Salt just tastes better when it hits that fresh fry.

I have a very fond memory of being over at my friends house with them and their step-brother and getting their step-dad to take us to KFC right before close one night.
When we got there we were just going to get a bucket and some biscuits but since they literally locked the door after us the employees just rang us up for the one bucket and gave us anything else we wanted.
We walked away with like 3 buckets and a large side of every option. I ended up staying over the whole weekend just to help eat all the KFC.

I worked at a McDonald’s on campus in my early college days. Many times someone would walk up with a handful of coins and ask how much for a burger and small fries or whatever. If they couldn’t afford both, I’d ring them up for the burger and then accidentally forget that they DIDN’T order the fries and throw them in the bag. I’d bet that there were many of us who did that. Come and get me corporate! :)

Yes, at the time I think they said it was the only one actually on a college campus. It’s gone now (maybe because of too many free fries), but my kids all have some form of chain restaurant in their student unions as part of a food court setup. It must make the universities some good money, you know, because tuition isn’t high enough to cover things.

I worked at a radio shack in the 1990s.
They had a ‘battery of the month’ club where you could bring your card in and get a single battery. Well, some of the old folks who came were obviously on a very limited budget and would bring their card in to get a battery and then have a handful of change to try to buy a few more, say, double a batteries for their little hand held radio that they sometimes brought in also.
I’d pretend to mark their card and then drop a giant handful of batteries into their
little purchase bag. They’d look surprised and I’d give them a little smile and a nod and send them on their way.

I will never forget the time it happened to me. I was carrying my dogs ashes around Brooklyn to all of her old favorite places and dropping some ashes. When we got to her spot in Prospect Park, I decided to stop at Mcdonalds because I was hungry and she used to love getting some nugs.
Well they gave me 11. I cried. I threw the extra one into the lake when I tossed her ashes. I miss Ham so much.

I worked at Sonic in HS and they fired me over this. I would send out the food and the people up front would go through it to make sure I didn't add it and they would actually take out the extra one.
The place shut down a few years later for health violations. They served hamburger buns that had bites from mice.

I got in shit cause id never give you one coupon, for us it was a free small fry or “blue ticket” as we called it. I’d hand em out for any reason, even if nothing went wrong, and id give you a solid like quarter inch of the book we were given. I ran out of mine every few days which is what got me in shit since the manager was thinking i was giving them to my friends before he checked the cameras and realized i just liked to be nice.

I managed one. Owner was a jerk and a lunatic. Used to sit in a parking lot and spy on us with binoculars. Accused me of stealing from him. Fired me at gunpoint. Later they found out it was his mistress. He owed the wrong people gambling $. Found his Cadillac with his blood in trunk. Never found him. His gf went back to Vegas. They think she was plant to keep eye on him. Case was never solved, but pretty sure everyone knew what salt bayou he was in. He's long been 🐊🦀💩

The McDonald’s closest to me is so bad. Like, it’s not exaggerating. I waited at the pick up window, window 2, whatever the fuck it’s called, for 18 minutes before anyone even came to the window. For 2 McDoubles that I ordered 5 minutes prior on the app. I’ve seen people who used to work at that location or others and tell the employees “I used to work here, do yall want me to come help”. I’ve heard customers ask “are yall hiring? I can start right now because this is ridiculous” or asking if they can just make their own food after 15 minutes of waiting lmao.
Maybe you’re close and you can help them cuz holy fuck it’s annoying ordering a pie and being told it’s gonna be 12 minutes after waiting 12 minutes.

I did this at Burger King for the 3 months I worked there. Sometimes I'd give them 2 extras. If they ordered two 4 piece nuggets they'd get 10 nuggets.
They also charged us to eat their food on lunch, and we weren't able to use our employee discount while on lunch because we had to be clocked in to use it even though we weren't allowed to purchase food while on the clock.

When I was doing my masters, there was a small cafe on campus. The cook over there was a very very sweet lady. My friend and I were vegetarians and there was hardly anything on the menu except for fries. She saw us order only fries a few times during lunch and asked if we want anything else. We told her that we are vegetarians and there weren’t much options on the menu. She quickly whipped up an amazing stir fry with rice and gave us on the house. Since then she would always make sure that there is something for us which wasn’t on the regular menu.

I was a regular at ordering chicken wings from a 7-11. To the point where the employees even delivered an item to me when the Uber eats driver forgot. They would add a cookie with my order and that always made my day. Some people are just sweet and good natured.

I worked at McDonald's when I was like 16 in 04. I would often throw in extra food. Especially after a big rush when there were a bunch of mismade burgers or overtake burgers. If i heard stones come through and just get like a burger and water I would hook them up. The look on their faces when they got their bag like they jist got away with a bank heist.

Worked at a McDonald’s through high school, there used to be a button that when pressed it put a red dot on the order for the guy at the end of the line bagging and it didn’t mean anything. So when someone would come thru obviously super high with blood shot eyes we’d press the bottom and the guy bagging would toss an extra McDouble or fries in the bag. Watching them open the bag and the smile of their faces was just the absolute best.

When I worked at McDonald's I always added 1-3 extra nuggets, wings, poppers, etc. especially if they ordered one or two extras, as two extras where at time more than adding 3 pieces on a bigger menu.
In a couple of weeks people started ordering more extras, so I guess there was enough to make extra profit even with the "losses".

Is that a big deal? I did that too. Better to give people more than to waste all those pureed chicks (chickens are egg-laying adults at like 16-20 weeks but get slaughtered at 5-6 weeks). Be kind to others. Even if it means serving bad food, because as long as people explicitly ask you for it, it’s okay to them. (Whether it’s okay for their health, the climate or the economy is a different matter.)

I worked at Whole Foods during Covid and everybody got 1 thing for free, or produce would get misrung to be something stupid cheap. It was a lot of fun!! In general, people were INCREDIBLY honest and would say "I don't think xxx scanned." And I'd always say, "I think it did, but you can check the receipt after you leave." Covid was a WILD time to work anywhere.
