Family: Scarpanidae

The usuba is among the more formidable airborne predators I have encountered. Its broad wings allow it to remain aloft with surprising stability despite its considerable mass, and it possesses two distinct defensive adaptations that make approaching a specimen exceptionally hazardous. When threatened from the front, the creature expels a concentrated stream of flame, apparently produced by igniting volatile compounds stored within its respiratory tract. A large group of Pikmin can be reduced to a panic stricken mob in moments if caught in the blast.

Its elongated abdomen is equally dangerous. When surrounded, the usuba swings its tail in a broad arc while releasing a powerful electrical discharge. This attack can pass through densely packed groups of Pikmin with alarming efficiency, making the usual tactic of overwhelming a large creature with sheer numbers particularly ill-advised. I suspect the conductive tissues running through the tail function much like the electrical organs of certain aquatic species, accumulating charge before releasing it upon contact.

Yellow Pikmin are exceptionally well suited to confronting this creature. Their natural resistance to electricity renders the usuba's most effective crowd-control mechanism largely harmless, and their exceptional throwing height makes reaching the airborne beast considerably easier. The creature's flames remain a serious danger, of course, so even a squad of yellows should be directed carefully.

It is tempting to regard such an extravagant combination of fire, electricity, and flight as excessive. Nature, however, seems entirely unconcerned with moderation. Perhaps I should remember that the next time I complain about carrying both a spacesuit and a repair kit.

Question Should I pick up Pikmin 1+2 or Pikmin 3 Deluxe?

Since the free upgrade was announced for Pikmin 3 Deluxe yesterday, I wanted to check out the game for myself, but at the same time I thought about playing the first and second Pikmin games on my switch 2 for quite some time now. It's hard to decide so which ones do y'all think I should start off first? Ive already finished Pikmin 4 in case if y'all are wondering.

Is pikmin 4 worth playing?

Huge older pikmin fan here, was born in 2000 and played 1 and 2 when I was a kid and over the years did a play through of each every few years. Absolute die hard fan of pikmin 2, so much so I don’t use purple pikmin at all when I play as I feel they ruin it. Anyways I’ve seen people say that pikmin 1 and pikmin 3 are similar, and how 2 and 4 like that as well. I’ve seen that pikmin 4 brings caves back but I also hear the dog makes the game way too easy. Has anyone tried playing the game without the dog? Is it worth it to play as an older fan?
Thanks

Discussion First Time Playthrough

To all long-time pikmin fans who played Pikmin 1 around when it was originally released in late 2001, what was it like on your first playthrough without any prior knowledge of the game beforehand and with only a far slower or more limited Internet (compared to now) to turn to if you got stuck?

Yellow Bulborb

Yellow Bulborb

Grub-dog family

Olimar’s Notes

This enormous relative of the bulborb is among the most obstinate creatures I have encountered. Fully grown Yellow Bulborbs exceed even the Jumbo Bulborb in size, yet curiously display almost no predatory behavior. Instead, they seek out narrow passages and crevices, wedge their tremendous bodies between them, and fall into an extraordinarily deep sleep. No amount of whistling, bodily impact, or sustained attack seems capable of waking one. After several increasingly undignified experiments, I began to wonder whether the creature is capable of waking at all!

Its peaceful disposition should not be mistaken for harmlessness. Even while asleep, each exhalation from its nostrils produces a surprisingly powerful gust of air, scattering nearby Pikmin much like the breath of a Puffy Blowhog. More troubling is the powerful electrical current coursing continuously through its body. The precise biological mechanism responsible remains unclear, though specialized tissues beneath the hide may generate and store electrical charges. Consequently, Yellow Pikmin appear to be the only variety capable of safely making direct contact with the creature.

Even with a sizable group of Yellow Pikmin, removing one is an exhausting undertaking. The Yellow Bulborb possesses an almost absurd degree of physical endurance, and its thick hide can withstand punishment that would incapacitate most members of the grub-dog family many times over. When attacked, it rapidly shakes its body, throwing Pikmin off almost as quickly as they can latch on. Remarkably, even this violent defensive response does not wake it. The motion appears to be entirely reflexive the equivalent of brushing away a bothersome insect while remaining sound asleep.

I hesitate to classify the Yellow Bulborb as an enemy in the conventional sense. It does not hunt Pikmin, pursue intruders, or consciously defend its territory. In practice, it functions more like a living gate. By sleeping between rocks, walls, and other narrow openings, a single specimen can completely obstruct an otherwise traversable route. Defeating one therefore feels considerably less like hunting a dangerous predator and more like dismantling a particularly stubborn piece of the landscape.

I must admit, however, that I find its ability to sleep through absolutely anything rather enviable. If only I could achieve such peaceful slumber when the President begins calling me before sunrise...
