Thought I’d introduce you all to my foster cat, Purrcy

Purrcy is 7 months old and is basically a walking bundle of sweetness. He genuinely doesn’t seem to have a grumpy bone in his body.

His morning routine is particularly adorable... he’ll come looking for his humans, climb into your arms (or under the blanket). During the day, when he’s not busy doing important kitten business, he’s usually either cuddling with his mum or flopping around next to his humans looking for attention.

Of course, being 6 months old means he also has A LOT of energy 😂. He loves to play and would absolutely benefit from humans who are prepared to help him burn some of it off. His mum does her best, but frankly, she is no longer keeping up with the kid.

He’s met children aged 5+ and loved playing with them, particularly with a cat teaser. He’s also very respectful of other cats and would likely be a fantastic companion for another young, playful cat.

He hasn’t been tested with dogs yet, but given how sweet and easygoing he is, I think he could potentially be introduced to a dog with the right slow introduction.

Purrcy's ideal home:
• Indoor only
• Happy in an apartment or smaller home, provided he has toys and some things to climb
• Would love people who are home reasonably often, although he can be left alone
• Would do particularly well with another young, playful cat
• Older/experienced kids who know how to play nicely with cats would be great

Honestly, Purrcy is just a really lovely little dude.

baby’ on board sticker on a car but that ain’t a baby

Hey everyone, I know there’s nothing that anyone who’s not involved in this situation can probably shed much light on with any certainty. But I’d love to know if anyone has had a similar experience/if this is considered normal? My best friend’s das has been in the Alfred for the past few weeks in the end stages of cancer. On Thursday she was told he had 3-4 months left to live, and that they were setting in motion the process of moving him into palliative care (still in the Alfred). Then on Sunday they said he actually only has weeks to live and that they were still working on getting him a place in palliative care. Yesterday they said he actually could die any day and they would imminently be moving him to palliative care. This morning they said they’d be moving him to palliative care today but that he might not even make it into palliative care. He’s now actively dying, expected to die any moment, and they still haven’t gotten him into palliative care. They’ve now cleared out a procedure room for my friend to have privacy with him in what are presumed to be his last hours. I totally understand that our entire hospital system is under strain and palliative care beds aren’t necessarily abundant, but how can it be that one of our supposedly best public hospitals can’t even find a proper place for someone to die and receive the appropriate care required during the dying process? Is this normal and simply to be expected with the way the hospital system works?

Any ideas. Funny is okay for a laugh but id like the honest answer too.

My neighbour, let's call him M, drives the wrong way up our street (a one-way street) either on his motorcycle or car on an almost daily basis. He does this because his property is situated two doors up from a side street which he uses to get to the main highway a short distance away. Basically, he is driving up the one-way street (illegally) and then going into the side street.

I have witnessed him almost get into a collision multiple times, and he seems to have no intention of stopping despite me querying him on the matter.

How can I prevent this from happening? I am concerned I, a member of my family, or someone else is going to get into an accident with him because of this.

Wanted to do a bit of a self contained adventure. This seemed as doable as any. I made a point to not trespass nor intrude into any fragile conservation areas, but otherwise kept as hard to the coastline as possible.

Plenty of highs and lows. Plenty of lessons learned.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely the fuck not.

Ask me anything. Or don’t, I don’t really mind.

Heard a massive bang around 10pm tonight but ignored it because, well, Melbourne.

Went outside later at 11pm to get something from the car and found this trolley blocking our driveway and part of the street.

Apparently someone near the shopping centre decided to strap two old cabinets onto a tiny Coles trolley with ratchet straps and take it for a joyride down our street. Inside were 2 stickers saying “Love 66”, 4 large Allen keys and some sort of plastic pipe (hookah/siphoning pipe? Who knows).

My dad and I had to drag the whole thing up the street and leave it on the walkway where it couldn’t roll/blow back onto the road. There used to be a trolley bay there, so seemed like the safest option.

Dad gets up at 5am for work, I get up at 6am, so needless to say we’re both not thrilled (particularly funny given Dad is a cabinet maker).

We constantly have abandoned Coles/Woolies trolleys around here. Is this worth reporting to council/Coles, or do we just accept that trolley hooliganism is part of living near a shopping centre?

Also slightly concerned someone could’ve driven into it tonight if we hadn’t moved it.

Is this the slowest upgrade in history? I swear they have been being upgraded for years at this point…

My sister needs some help, she can't post because new account stuff, but here's her summary:

I'm 32y and have struggled with hairdressers all my life. Usually good at masking, but something about being placed in front of a mirror and realising how awkward and fat I look just makes talking extremely difficult for me. The small talk feels like torture and have just had bad experiences with hairdressers telling me how quiet I am, which makes me want to crawl into a hole and makes talking even more difficult. I also have a hearing loss and find it difficult to hear when people are talking to me in a noisy environment with my hearing aids out (which they will be during the appointment).

I've never professionally coloured my hair before, so have no idea what to book when looking at online booking pages. I have used 2-3 box dyes in my life, but essentially just to cover my greys. As I'm getting more greys now, looking to get it professionally coloured as I don't think I do a very good job. I'm also in desperate need of a good cut and re-style as my fear of hairdressers has made me avoid them for years. I'm now looking very pentecostal with long unstyled hair down to my waist/bum.

I'm looking to get a good chop (1/3 -1/2 length off), curtain bangs/short face-framing layers and an all over dye/colour in a very dark espresso brunette shade. My hair is naturally very dark already, but I want it all to be the same shade.

Hoping to find an understanding and nice hairdresser that can accommodate me and isn't too demanding when it comes to talking. Fairly open to location, but I'm based in the West side. Preferably online booking as well, though again not exactly sure what to book for!

Any recommendations very appreciated!

Lightning McQueen is making an appearance at Westfield Fountain Gate on September 1, good one if you've got little ones who are obsessed. Melbourne Museum also has Tiny Tours running the same day for the younger crowd.

lygon st Italian restaurants are a joke and after visiting the area countless times over the last 15 years I’m yet to eat at one that’s not packet ravioli and total shit. I love proper Italian food and would be keen to know if anyone knows of a genuinely good place on lygon that serves actual good food

In the new construction on the eastern freeway there seems to be many new cameras pop up on poles with blue and white lights flashing and they also seem to have little dome cameras with them.

Why the flashing lights and what are they detecting? Phone usage, traffic conditions, speeding, construction progress?

Some of you may recognise some of these kitties 🐱 from posts I've shared here before. These are 9 cats I've fostered through my local shelter. They're all now happily adopted, and a few of them actually found their people through Reddit.

So, thank you Reddit :)
 
But after fostering these kitties, I've also been thinking a lot about something that I feel gets overlooked far too often.
 
We talk about how cute cats are, we have slogans like "adopt, don't shop" and "desex your cat", but we don't seem to talk nearly as much about why there are SO MANY cats needing to be rescued in the first place.
 
And I think that's the more important conversation (though much less of a dopamine hit).
 
Somewhere along the way, an un-desexed cat had kittens. Those kittens grew up and MORE kittens. And before you know it, you've got a colony of cats.
 
I've also changed my mind about something since becoming a foster carer: Feeding stray cats.
 
I understand why people do it as they’re merely trying to “help”, but they may very well be enabling this vicious cycle… because cats reach reproductive age quickly, and can reproduce so quickly.
 
I also understand why some people are reluctant to involve shelters. There's a genuine fear that taking a stray cat to a shelter could result in euthanasia. This leads to another conversation I think needs more nuance.
 
I've seen people say they won't support organisations like RSPCA or Lost Dogs' Home because animals are sometimes euthanised. Nobody wants that outcome.
 
Shelters didn't create the overpopulation problem. They're dealing with the consequences of it.
 
They have finite space, money, staff, vets and foster carers. There's an uncomfortable imbalance in how different rescue organisations are perceived.
 
A smaller, strictly no-kill rescue can sometimes have the option of saying "we don't have capacity for this cat" or limiting which animals they take in.
 
Meanwhile, organisations such as RSPCA and Lost Dogs' Home are often the ones left dealing with the animals that have nowhere else to go, and consequently receive the criticism when they have to make difficult decisions.
 
I'm not saying no-kill rescues are doing anything wrong. They do important work too.
 
I'm saying that we shouldn't judge one organisation's outcomes without considering which animals they are actually able, or required, to take in.
 
The fundamental problem remains:
Animals needing homes > suitable homes available = a problem no shelter can solve alone.
 
We can't keep increasing the number of cats entering the system and expect shelters to somehow absorb all of them.
 
So, if we actually want fewer cats ending up in shelters and on the streets, prevention has to be part of the conversation:
·       Desex your cats.
·       If you're feeding stray/community cats, look into getting them desexed.
·       Microchip and register your pets.
·       Adopt or foster if you can.
·       Support organisations and programs that work on desexing and community-cat management.
 
None of this is as satisfying as rescuing a kitten, but preventing the next litter from being born might be the most important rescue of all.
 
In an ideal world, I wouldn't need to be a foster carer because there wouldn't be so many cats needing someone to rescue them. 🫶🏻

Hi Melbourne fam, seeking a room with a bar for 40-60 people in the CBD or inner city (Richmond/Fitzroy/Collingwood/South Yarra/Prahran etc) that will allow a DJ. It's a mostly hard-partying crowd so preference is to contain the damage to a private room!

Having a bit of trouble finding a good mid-sized spot. Most places I've looked at are either sprawling (100-plus guests) or a bit tight. Was looking at Polly in Fitzroy upstairs but it's unfortunately booked out. Have short-listed the downstairs Vault at Caz Reitops' DS but it looks a bit claustrophic. Grace Darling's downstairs room also looks OK but a bit bland.
