I really want to know how the chaotic/lawful spectrum would work here and what true neutral looks like

21

Lawful would be more "conventional" identities like simply "non binary", while chaotic is shit like xenogenders and such, the things that make anti-woke/sjw people stay up at night.

Assigned female at birth and assigned male at birth

But you'd only ask that to a non binary person and... Well if youre asking that chances are you wanna mentally assign them the label of "masculine" or "feminine" which is the opposite of what labels they wanna use

2

u/MajorBootyhole420 7h ago

there are some contexts where it's reasonable to ask, but they're usually pretty self-evident, and often more applicable in person - like checking before you womansplain periods to someone who knows how they work, lmao. then again, in person, you usually don't need to ask bc it's often just kinda obvious.

so yeah it's often a sus question

wait yeah I'm not a transformers fan so idk but why are there both male and female ones? surely they don't reproduce sexually

51

u/the_RiverQuest you should play TRANSFORMERS: Fall of Cybertron 11h ago edited 10h ago

Simple: the Transformers brand was made by humans who do have the concept of gender.

If we're talking in-universe, then "gender" doesn't really exist as a concept and "male" and "female" are just what a cybertronian uses to refer to themselves as to make it easier for other races to understand.

As for their amount, believe me, there HAVE been attempts at explaining why there's so little female transformers compared to male ones before without giving any of them a gender but that's a whole other can of worms and all of them have been.... Let's just say really really bad.

15

u/Assassin-49 7h ago

Short answer is more men than women enjoy transformers. Not saying its 100% but id say its like 60% to 70%. At least thats how I put it. Could be wrong though.

Imo it's specifically weird if you say 'men and females'. Otherwise in some contexts 'female' does make sense.

232

u/beaaaaaaaans 17h ago

It's usually weird when used as a noun more than as an adjective. If you heard someone say "look at that female over there" or something you'd probably find it weird

87

u/TheLuminary 14h ago

YES! This is it. Its weird when female (or male for that matter) is used as a noun. Using it as an adjective is fine.

3

u/charizardfan101 5h ago

I feel like we really should separate "human" from "people" though, as one is describing a species, and the other a societal thing

All humans are people, but not all people are humans

All known fully accepted people are humans, but there are some humans who argue that animals such as Orcas and Dolphins are intelligent enough that they should be considered people despite not being human

And that's not even getting into the possibility of intelligent aliens and how we'd also have to refer to them as people despite them not being humans (I'll admit to being unrealistically optimistic here)

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Dragonssssssssssss 16h ago

Why tho? If you're a science guy you know Male and Female refer to the reproductive biology of most species. You don't interact with the things that make a person Male or Female on a regular basis. You interact with the social aspect of being a Human Male or Female, for which we have alternative words.

I still think saying "my boss who is a girl" is still weird cus it implies she is younger and childish, kinda saying you are still above her even thou she is your boss

Just say "my boss, she did this and that", context clue is fine, if they didn't caught that just say "she, not he". Idk, even saying woman boss is still weird cus it implies every boss is a man if not said otherwise

13

u/sulleyandmike 13h ago

I have always said that when people refer to a woman as "girl" it is not done so in the "boy/girl" sense but in the "guy/girl" sense (no one uses gal). Obviously context matters and some people do use it to infantilize, but I would say that most uses are not done with that intention.

5

My biggest pet peeve is when people use the words male and female as nouns when talking about people. I understand it in a professional context like a hospital, but in basically any other it just sounds dehumanizing.

7

u/Asbjoern135 13h ago edited 13h ago

Are you a native english speaker, because as a non-native one it somehow sounds better to me to say "female prime minister" than "woman prime minister" even though it might be less correct

9

u/Haarunen 13h ago

The first example you gave sounds better, because it’s the only one of the two that is grammatically correct, because it specifically uses the word “female” as an adjective, where as the word “woman” is exclusively a noun.

I am not a native English speaker, but I am fluent and use it as much as my mother’s tongue.

They don't though. Incels call women "foids"  or "holes" way more often. Go on /pol/ or /r9k/, you're not seeing anyone say female

32

u/CoupDeGraceTyson 16h ago

Those are hardcore weirdo incels. I find that the people who use "females" are the soft incels: they don't use the terminology or make 4chan posts about how they saw a woman and got SO ANGRY, but you can frequently tell there's a bit of a tilt in the way they view gender equality.

Female, as a noun, is often used to dehumanize women.

Female, as an adjective, is a descriptor for a noun and not dehumanizing but it can be with certain tones.

"Female doctor" is not inherently dehumanizing but "oh great. A female doctor" can be.

10

u/JamiCatalyst 15h ago

Cus it kinda dehumanise the woman you are talking about, reducing her into her reproductive organ and making her seem like an animal (cus we usually say female when describing other animal species). It also implies that her thoughts and emotions are animalistic, so her opinion doesn't matter as much

Example: female, amiright? cue laughing track

3

u/Loqh9 5h ago

"She's a female" is weird but "I have female friendships" isn't to me?

I used to never use the word female before but I've heard a bunch of women around me use it in the second way which made me pick it up eventually

Am I right in that understanding? I'm not a native English speaker

→ More replies (1)

7

u/TheLuminary 13h ago

The issue is when you use the word female or male as a noun it can be demeaning or dehumanizing. Like referring to someone as it.

The confusion is that using the word female or male as an adjective is totally fine and people who get upset about this are either confused or are just looking for rage bait.

Consider:

Look at that female over there, by the males.

Sounds like you are talking about a bunch of animals or something. But if you change it to an adjective instead:

Look at that female lumberjack over there, by the male dancers.

Totally fine.

6

u/Quincy_Hater 13h ago

I don’t use male and female in dehumanizing ways, and I still also use man or woman and girl and boy. Whenever I use one, I use the other, I don’t go “man and female” or something like that.

But I do now understand how it can in fact sound bad

Honestly this thing confuses the hell out of me as a non native, I hear WOMEN (see I did it right) call themselves female all the time, in my own language we also have of course female and woman and its really interchangeable, so sometimes while I'm speaking quickly it does drop.. but theres never any particular intent behind it!

At the same time though I do also see the classic manosphere chuds using it to belittle women, so I understand why it would be an issue, I just wish words in general weren't so finnicky, it should be more about the context and intent, but its not that simple I'm sure

12

u/MajorBootyhole420 7h ago

tldr use it as an adjective like "female friends" or "male teacher" or whatever. or like "the patient was female."

but using it as a noun, like "i don't talk to females" is the weird-sounding part. that's how you talk about livestock, not human beings

4

u/DubbyTM 6h ago

Yeah I agree, seeing some examples people are doing its absolutely something I never said even by accident, so perhaps I just miss-understood what people complained about, because what you said there would instantly sound wrong and weird to me even as a non-native

The rule for using Male and Female is: if you could just as easily be talking about an animal, it's a way of dehumanizing the subject of the statement.

"Those females over there": Female what, Sheep? Oh, Female Humans. Luckily we have a word for that. Just say Women, dawg.

"Female Teacher": animals can't be Teachers, so you're fine.

"Females" is used more colloquially because misogyny is baked into society, but it goes both ways. Being called "a Male" is gross. I am not interchangeable with a Ram.

so i'm a a tad neurodivergent (slightly autistic, adhd, ocd lmao) and i almost exclusively used male and female tags for whatever reason in a casual setting. think of me as the slightly odd guy that pronounces words painfully correctly, has a wide vocabulary, and doesn't get sarcasm at face value.

i only just recently got told by my gf how weird that was, in the nicest way she could haha. i still think in terms of saying male and female, but my friends have told me they can "see my brain churning" everytime i correct myself and opt towards saying man, woman, girl, boy etc.

i'm not sure why i have that particular "thing" with those tags, but it's been with me ever since i was a kid (read lots of books i suppose) and it's kind of amusing now when i catch myself mid-sentence.
