this is sad, of course, just as everything he's been allowed to do falls somewhere on the ever-expanding scale of sadness
but the bitter, dark, canadian part of me is glad he's leaving physical marks on the landscape as a record of his brutality. he won't be forgotten in 2029 (he might even still be in office then)
he's making sure his mark is permanent. i just hope americans remember it the next time they're voting for the leader of their country
his presidency wasn't some accidental, one-off fluke. it happened twice
That’s VERY true. Trump has zero power without 100% support from every single Republican congressman and senator. The whole party is rotten to the core.
That's what more people need to understand. If not Trump, some other MAGA candidate will be president. Through 3 elections we've shown that this is what America is right now. We need big societal changes before we become something respectable again.
He is a symptom because this didn't start with him and unfortunately it won't end with him because the people and policies that got him in office will insure of that.
He is the representation of everything wrong about America and that it's been recently that more people are realizing this. The depravity and greed has been integral for America since its inception (the genocide of Indigenous people, the Atlantic slave trade, etc.) to form a hierarchy that rewards straight white wealthy men and that is by design.
I am an American who voted against him 3 times. We had 77 million racist greedy morons who voted for him and additional pathetic 90 million who didn't vote at all. So, yes, you are 100% correct. You cannot trust the US any longer.
as an american who also NEVER voted for him, i suspect that (at the very least) the last election was stolen. and we are watching as they are trying to do the same thing this upcoming november.
Same. I’m in a deeply red state and I don’t keep company with only dems. I know all of one person who did not vote for Kamala. The repubs I know either also noted for her or didn’t vote.
I'm American, I concurr and I also apologize to all Canadians on behalf of those who fought to keep him out of office. We exist, we tried everything, and it wasn't enough. I'm sorry.
We didn't try hard enough. The first time around we thought there was no way. The second time we pushed back just hard enough. The third time... there's no excuse for that.
There were people here that gave it everything. Depressing, really. To think that they gave their heart and soul to the fight and so many Americans shrugged and said it wasn't their problem.
It's telling that he won when running against women. Fundamentalist Christian misogyny is woven deeply into many Americans' identity and thought processes.
Never forget the dems that wouldn't get off their asses and vote for the one candidate that would have defeated him. To this day they blame anyone but themselves for this BS. I will never forget or forgive those fencesitting POSs.
I'm still fighting. I go to every protest I can, I help my candidates campaign, I help write articles in the newspaper, I attend every political event I can, I speak with every candidate I get the chance to as well. My mom does all that and more too, she's an old hippie and I'm proud to work with her through all this.
But it never feels like it's enough. We do more than most and there's always more to do, and it never feels like it's enough. But still we fight, because how could we not?
As an American and as a Canadian, I cannot and will not stand idly by and watch this country go into the shitter without a fight.
I work in political tech and I just want to tell you how much it matters to the folks working in politics seeing folks like you show up and work hard for this country. The day to day stress right now is almost unbearable and seeing folks turn out for their communities is sometimes the only thing that keeps me going. We deserve a better country and it insoires me to see folks out trying to make that happen.
I worked really hard organizing and it’s WM who were shrugging their shoulders and doing jack shit. If you wanted to find a way to help- you’d likely have a woman trainer or organizer. So now men insist no one worked hard. We did and you refused to even engage.
I had to stop and think about this— you’re absolutely right. I’m mid-30s and I’ve only ever voted on one presidential ballot without Trump’s name on it, and with the way things are going, his name might be on the next one as well.
Idk if anyone else feels this way, but I’ve never believed we’ll ever be a non morally corrupt country. There’s no agreed upon way to deal with the learned hatred and apathy that’s systematically built into our society. Humans don’t like change or outsiders, our brains will target people we feel threatened by(even if there is no genuine threat)
Hillary Clinton got almost 3 million more votes than him in 2016, we are just held hostage by an electoral system that does not take the will of the people into account
I sobbed when he was elected the second time because I know what it meant. Voted against him twice (wasn’t old enough to vote the first time around)
I volunteer at polling places as a poll worker and this year is the first year where my friends/family are genuinely concerned for my safety and don’t want me to do it.
Im still doing it, because I will do anything in my power to make sure people have access to exercise their right to vote
I'm not one either but I firmly believe the team they brought in to investigate the 2020 election, The Cyber Ninjas, were not looking if there was fraud, but how to create fraud for 2024.
Whilst I saw the claims, the terrible turnout was a bigger cause. Which is equally as bad as voting for trump. But the lack of wanting to vote is also a symptom of the failure of the social contract.
Let us all remember that the GOP has been ratfucking elections for decades through things like polling place closures & voter roll purges. Many of the people who "didn't vote" simply couldn't vote.
He didn't win the first time it's because we lived in a flawed democracy that he got in office over Hillary Clinton even though he did not win the popular vote.
The United States does not have a democracy when it comes to selecting presidents.
Every country has a similar share of fools. Among other things, a robust society should be designed to contain and channel them. Unfortunately, not in today's America.
So, I'd rather blame America's intelligent (but way too greedy) people, past & present, for the way they've designed and corrupted America. I also blame good Americans, for being too lazy/distracted to successfully unite, organize and resist their intelligent but greedy elites, these past 80 years, (at least since 1947 and the Taft Hartley Act which gradually crippled unions, thus giving the wealthy elites and their corporations unchecked and excessive power)
And I've voted against him. Three times. Generalizations are nasty things brother, they dont reveal truth, and create deep seated divisions especially when applied to people.
Did they though trump said In a dementia rant that Elon rigged the election. As did one of the many baby mothers of elons. Also how did they win every swing state just above the recount number. It was rigged so will be the next one. They keep saying stolen election so anyone who calls them out sounds as crazy as them.
Only about a third of this country voted for him. The majority either did not vote or voted against him. I hate that that third has elected such a fraud to represent us.
Lmao, I think you’re the one lacking clarity. Depending on your state, sometimes your vote for president just doesn’t matter. I live in the most liberal state in the country. While I did vote, the decision of where our electoral votes go was pretty much decided before the ballots are even printed. The electoral college actively disincentivizes many individuals from voting.
Yes the vote is added to the tally, but it doesn’t actually matter.
As someone who’s lived in both California and Florida, people feel very discouraged to vote in a state where the influence of their vote is essentially already determined for them bc of electoral college. You’re 100% right.
I keep seeing this message but again, I cannot find any legitimate sources from independent outlets e.g. Bellingcat. It just all seems like an easy way to wash off the responsibility of your countrymen and women.
I haven't trusted Americans since they reelected GWB.
As soon as Trump came down that dumbass elevator, I said " mark my words: if Americans are given the choice, they'll vote for him." I hate that I was still surprised though.
Between 2020 and 2024 every demographic shifted towards R. White men/women, and Hispanic men voted R, everyone else voted D. But point remains that every demographic shifted R for 2024, except white men/women, which stayed identical.
Black Americans when from +86 D to +64 D. Hispanic went from +25 to +3 D. Asian went +40 D to +17D. White stayed the same at -12 R.
So something about Harris vs Trump after 4 years of Biden convinced Americans across the board that more Trump is what we need. That shift across the board is what we need to address. Yes obviously white men are the majority of R voters, but that's ignoring the glaring problem that EVERYONE started going towards Trump.
For the most part yea, but the pool of Trump voters actually got more diverse last time around. I’m from an area with lots and lots of conservative Latinos—really can’t assume someone’s politics based on identity around these parts.
Tbf it's not really insane when you look at how stripped away education has been (eg no child left behind) and how tech companies have captured people's minds in the algorithms which instead of challenging ideas, reinforces their terrible beliefs.
He's going to hijack elections and the democratic system as long as he breathes, and his wealthy lapdogs will help him. It's not 100% on US people, but they sure as hell helped him get there.
Well said. Even when Donald passes, the (shit-stained and gold-plated) mark he’ll leave will have irreparably tainted US/Canada relations. Doesn’t matter who replaces him, the equation has changed.
Glad to see that the majority of Canadians have recognized this and are keeping their elbows up.
(Unless you’re a follower of the traitorous Premier Smith of AB…)
his presidency wasn't some accidental, one-off fluke. it happened twice
I always feel like while a part of my love for this country was extinguished in 2016, a much, much bigger part was extinguished in 2020. I could have moved past a single election, told myself it was a fluke, people trying to shake up the system, whatever. But when it happened again, and when I knew this time that we (collectively as a country; I wasn't an active participant) put him back into office intentionally, knowing what a shit show it was the first time around, something fractured in me that I don't think can ever be repaired.
I'm gasping in European here! But yeah, it's pretty much par for the course (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?!!!) in "fascism 101" to tear down every reminder of the past and turn it into monuments for Dear Leader.
It's extra wild seeing him being busy with renovations on top of all the other shitshows and during the same time as the US debt is at an insane spiral - and he decides to spend money building another golf course.
I have to admit I've been lax in my news consumption to not go depressed too fast but I just saw a couple of youtube vids about how Europe is getting rid of their US bonds as well as, of course, moving closer to Canada. Meanwhile corporations are fleeing the US and moving operations, on example was American car manufactoring moving to Canada. These things CAN'T be undone and they'll probably be lost American jobs forever even if the next president rolls everything back politically.
Americans apparently suck at learning, since we voted for this guy a second time. I don't know how much we have to hurt ourselves and others to get the hint.
Americans are stupid as fuck, so no, it won't be remembered by a majority of voters and there will probably be another Republican in office in 10 years
No, it's understandable. The more shit he does the more will go in the history books. But not in the way he wants. Guaranteed PoliSci will be referencing him for years.
I agree it is sad, and it's going to be what he does from now to the end of his time in office. No one is willing to stop him, no one is willing to stand up to him. The Republican Party will not stop him and the Courts only embolden him. By the time he's out of Washington D.C. it will be in ruins.
Our country foolishly allows full blown propaganda to be broadcasted 24/7 with no limits. This allows our citizens to be made to believe whatever is most convenient for those in control of that propaganda machine. We will only learn from this if it somehow benefits the 4 people who control that massive machine.
