I’ve just finished watching the series.

I started watching it back in 2008 when it first came on TV in Germany and followed it for a few years, but never got round to finishing it.

I always meant to, and actually managed to avoid spoilers for over 15 years. I had no idea who the mother was, let alone what happens at the end.

WTF

It was worth the wait.

I get the gay dreams idea that Ted had was obviously better to create a psychological warfare between Barney and Marshall, but I dunno, when I watch that episode sometimes I wish we got to see their reaction if Ted went with Robins idea and told them he only had three months left to live.

Even though Barney often comes across as completely self-centered, the fact that he secretly went all the way to San Francisco to bring Lily back proves he is truly a great friend. However, one detail bugs me: hadn't Lily already returned to New York by the time Barney started stealing chicks from Marshall at the bar?

In my opinion, the writers bent the continuity a little just to add emotional depth to Barney’s character arc.

Aside from that, it was refreshing to watch Robin in scenes independent of Ted; the awkward vibrator gift at the bridal shower and the bachelor party stripper scenes made this episode thoroughly entertaining.

I completed himym months ago, and I thought then that I would compile my thoughts for the show and write about it , but me being me I didn’t do what I thought I would do. But today I am finally writing about it. I don’t know how or what style do I want to write so for now I am just gonna ramble what I thought about the show and lets see how it goes.

I am a serial sitcom watcher. For context I have watched and completed friends, big bang theory,  the office, modern family , Schitt's creek , you’re the worst, four seasons of young sheldon(I was not not in a good state), and am 3 seasons into 30 rock which I have been avoiding and rewatching friends instead which is more enjoyable ; apart from himym which I have watched in full.

If I wanna give a one sentence I mostly loved the show. But the infamous ending has of course led a mostly great show to scrutiny. So let me talk about it in parts.

 First coming to the comedy in the sit-"com". It was a little juvenile and a bit repetitive( look at me dissecting comedy like I am some comedy legend). I never thought it was incredibly funny like some other(friends, office, modern family). While it had a few funny moments, the deciding a bar scene , the Canada jokes, and the general banter between the group but overall the comedy is not what led me to watch 9 seasons of this. They tried to make a lot of things iconic by giving them names like the "olive theory", "the mermaid theory", "nothing good happens after 2 am" ,"lemon law", "cheerleader effect" etc. (I had to google these which even more so emphasizes my point). But this try hard approach was a little on the nose and worked only occasionally(The yellow umbrella , the "major catchphrase" worked for example).

The things that actually became iconic and quote worthy for me which I'll come to later were when they weren't trying so much and it was actually subtle and weaved into the dialogues more.

Now lets skip to the good part. The romance. I thought this show did romance better than any other sitcom I have seen and is up there with some of the best romances I have watched on screen. While other show did have iconic romantic pairs — ross and Rachel , Jim and pam, David and Patrick. Most of these had one partner for the same character that had made them iconic which is not the case for himym. There was only ever chemistry between ross and Rachel and they didn’t have that level of love with anyone else. And while some might argue that Monica had chemistry with Richard before chandler,  I say fuck Richard. Coming back to himym Ted had great chemistry with not only a single partner. There was Victoria, Stella , Zoey(and while I didn’t love that story line but there was something to it) , Tracy( for the grand total of nothing episodes she appeared in) , and of course the most with Robin. Robin too had equally good even though different kind of relationships with Ted and Barney. And while we view Barney as the womanizer he was, I loved him with Nora and Robin. 

 Also apart from the romantic plots and pairs, himym had the most remember worthy romantic moments. The rain dance, the two minute date, stealing the blue French horn, ted seeing robin for the first time, the la vie en rose scene just to name a few.

I think calling just the romantic moments iconic would be injustice, the show did emotions very well on the whole, and a bunch of scenes hit me to my core. A few which I can think of are "look around ted you're all alone" (oh my god how hard that hit me, and continues to give me goosebumps every time I come across that scene), Marshall's dad dying ( how well did that misdirect for the episode called "bad news" worked) left me in tears , Barney's confrontation with his dad. Am I seeing a pattern here ? Well its probably nothing.

And a few others like robin finding out she cant be a mother, and lily feeling the weight of motherhood were really good as well. 

And these moments were the core reason I loved the show so much. 

Coming to that ending, yes they did fuck it up. If I am not wrong Ted meeting Tracy at the platform to her getting sick and dying to Barney and Robin divorcing to the group not being together even for the special moments to Barney having a daughter to Ted going for Robin again happens within the span of 15-20 minutes. I mean genuinely what the fuck. But if you think about it, they had dug themselves into a hole from the start. The whole big reveal was supposed to be how Ted met his wife. But where would they go after they did meet ? It would be senseless to carry on a few seasons with Tracy and keep calling it how I met your mother, when we already know that. While doing that could have worked better the writers chose elsewise. Those few extra seasons where Ted ends up happily ever after with Tracy could have fully changed the social narrative of the show from having a horrible ending to a "what could have been" between Ted and Robin. And excuse me swearing , but what the fuck was that ending with Barney, they spent 3 fucking seasons developing his character from a womanizer to a one woman man who loved her very much , and fucking all of that up in one episode basically saying old habits die hard and trying to redeem him by him crying on his daughters birth where we have no idea of the mother. No a big FUCK YOU to the writers for that. 

At one point I was even ready for a sad ending, where Tracy dies and Ted lives single for the rest of his life because he had found the love of his life and so what if she is not with him anymore , he will live with her memories and the children she gave her. I was fully ready to form the conclusion that even if we have seen these guys being friends for 9 seasons , its not how it works in real life. Friends get separated. The hopeless romantic doesn’t get his happily ever after in the real life after all. The fever dream is over, come back to the real life. I would have been depressed sure, but it would have been better than whatever they did.

But in the end it was a good enough show to extract so many emotions and opinions out of me. I will keep revisiting the romantic and emotional moments of the show via reels and keep being happy and sad. I will keep listening to La Vie en Rose and I will keep loving Robin.

Found this in one of my coaching modules

For me, it was the scene in "Shelter Island" (S4E05), when Robin tries to talk Ted out of marrying Stella. Just to be clear, I do believe that Robin was right in the sense that Ted was essentially rushing to the end of the book, and that despite Ted claiming to be a "romantic", he is settling down too quickly with a woman he ultimately doesn't know that well. In Ted's eyes, Stella is just a "good enough" option to fulfill his wishes of the white picket fence family happy ending, similar to Maggie Wilkes in "The Window"(S5E10).

I think this message would've been much more impactful if it had been delivered by Marshall or Lily. It kind of pissed me off how Robin essentially tells Ted, that she liked him being single, just in case maybe, just MAYBE, she would change her mind about him some day. In this moment, it seemed as though Robin was more than happy to string Ted along and keep him as a back burner option. So what? Is Ted supposed to just sit around and be miserable just on the off-chance that Robin might change her mind about him, eventually?

This fanbase treats Ted like the devil in human form, but here, Robin is not exactly squeaky clean herself. Having said all of this, Robin was completely right that Ted should not have been getting married at this point, because as she put it, he was "Disappearing into someone else's wedding without a second thought." Like I said, this message would've been much more powerful if delivered by Marshall or Lily.

Like the title says, "Right message, wrong messenger". Are there any other examples of this?

Maybe they should’ve left the the lowest and let Ted stop chasing Robin, would’ve been the right thing to do

I don't understand how Victoria had Robins necklace. Ted would not have given it to her, did she just see some random locket and think hey that's now mine?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but…every time I rewatch the series I’m a totally thrown off by that weird saxophone early 90s sounding music when they go from one scene to another.

Glad they moved away from that in subsequent seasons. Anyone notice it or annoyed by it?

I just finished it, and tbh i DID know the ending (it was spoiled), but wow. all i can say is WHAT A SHOW. Multiple times throught the show, i felt like i was apart of the show if yk what i mean. i was so sad when it ended and i wish it wouldve went on. heres a review on every part:

S1: i feel like it was a beautiful introduction, i loved the charechter of ted, just a hopless romantic, however i didnt rlly like barney ngl, he just felt super annoying.

S2-3- Sm amazing moments tbh, i loved how they started the development of Barney and Ted and the rest of the cast. AMAZING

S4-6- THE BEST seasons of the whole show, it was comedy while playing with our emotions, it was back and forth and i loved it!

S7-9- here i felt like it started to switch, from comedy to just pure emotion and tbh i didnt mind it, i felt like it was the emotional side of the show we needed.

The ending- When i first heard of the ending, i thought it was amazing, but after all nine season, i am proud to say i no longer like it. i feel tracy deserved much more! and they rushed WAY too much in the end!

Other notes:

The slap bet/slutty pumpkin/ducky tie. LOVE IT never seen shows which implement ideas like this and keep them long going!

I also LOVE how it was so emotional, so much shows just felt fake and missing, but this was different, i mean it was DIFFERENT. It had rlly deep emotion, which i loved!

I was mad at robin and barney consedering how they ended, it was just so messy! and how the group just grew apart, i felt that spark was just missing in the last episode, it was uncomforting, almost awkward.

I also heard about sm ppl saying lily was a bad charechter and tbh, i have mixed opinions. I mean she ruined ALOT and felt selfish at times, like breaking up teds GFs and the argument with marshall about Italy, it just felt selfish. At the same time, that added an effect to the show, it added reality, which i loved.

I also loved how they had side charachters WHO MATTERED pppl like stuart who kept coming back and appearing.

overall rating is 9.2/10

Honestly I loved it, it made me laugh extremely hard. I didn’t hate a single member of the main cast, as controversial as it is Lily was my favorite Ashley Hannigan did a wonderful job playing her.
I think one of my favorite jokes was Weekend at Barney’s, I laughed so hard the last time they brought it up and obviously the slap bet and Robin Sparkles were iconic and hilarious. Although I didn’t like the last slap that much, it just wasn’t as funny as the others.
As for the ending I knew how it ended and was prepared for it but I still didn’t like it, I really liked Tracy for as short of a time we got her and she played off Ted really well.
All in all I loved this show and has made me interested in going into architecture for a career path when I graduate.
But yeah I’d give the show an 8/10

This is my current ranking of the season as I am watching along with the podcast, though I have seen the show many times over. I want to be clear, all these episodes are great to me and it's actually pretty hard to rank these. Seems like a combination of the status quo change of Marshall & Lily finally being married and the fallout of Ted & Robin's breakup mixed with the urgency of the creatives to come out swinging following the WGA strike of that year, but almost every episode feels like a classic of the show in some way.

Here's my honest opinion on ending

The ending that aired would have made since if the show ended in 2007 or 2008 but not in 2014 after 9 seasons of character development. the biggest mistake the show did was throw away all that character development and stories for a pre planned ending intended for the seasons 1-3 versions of the characters by season 4-5 the characters were no longer compatible with the pre planned ending. The lesson: don't write your characters to match a Pre-planned ending, write your ending to match the characters they are at the end.

It's a small easter egg, not big! I thought I should share this, HAHA

Even though Ted and Robin’s relationship seems to be going well, the moment they decide to move in together, they both realize deep down that it’s a mistake. In my opinion, they just aren't meant for each other.

Barney’s storyline in this episode was genuinely entertaining, and what I loved most was the extra depth added when Ted realized he didn't actually want to move in with Robin.

Also, Barney didn't even know how to drive in previous episodes, yet here he is driving a whole moving truck ahaha.
