6
u/YourEvilKiller 19h ago
It could be sarcastic.
Or it can be saying that he's the type to ride high and have lots of fun, but gets bored quickly and jumps to the next girl after that.

u/catsflatsandhats 19h ago
Because he’s going to love bomb her for the first weeks. As this kind of person usually does.

u/confused_being02 22h ago
The guy is complimenting the girl with the most cliché line and the girl asks how many girls he has said this to before so the guy accepts the accusation bcoz it's true and tells her to concentrate and play along bcoz this is her turn to hear it.
That's it.

Because he could be an ass and ask her, "How many men have you asked to cum in you, pull your hair, called daddy, took birth control/plan B for, sent nudes, etc etc etc". Dating is a dance, and as you age you're well aware your partner has had other dance partners. So you just concentrate on the fact those partners didn't work out for whatever reason. The important thing, is figuring out if your new partner can match your rhythm, teach you a new jig, or will step all over your feet.

She changed the subject from them flirting to an accusation of him being sleazy.
He countered the accusation by admitting he has used this line before.
At this point the conversation is about him being a pig, so he says "it's your turn to hear it" to bring the conversation back to flirting, and then "concentrate" to advise her to focus on the flirting more than accusing him of things.

7
u/Lopsided_Inspector62 20h ago
He says it as a bit of playful comedic relief.
If he had just left it on the previous text it may have come across rude or expectant. Far too cocky.By saying concentrate he is leaving the door open for her to playfully flirt back. If she is not about it then she will likely shut it down. Either way she knows now that he is really just wanting the fun and not necessarily looking for a strong commitment.
3
u/PyJacker16 20h ago
Yeah I don't know why people on this thread are so riled up about it. Your analysis is right; adding "Concentrate." there dilutes the brashness of the earlier text, recenters the conversation, and keeps things light-hearted.
Can't say I see any indication of his level of commitment though. It's just good banter.

The girls finally arrive and tell the guys that they want to take a bath and they would like them to rub their backs.

People without confidence often mistake confidence for asshole behavior too. I think this is much more common than women falling for people who act like assholes.
53
u/Cvpakke 21h ago
I actually think that assholes in general are more common than not, by some small margin, at least in the US. Our culture promotes it. I'm not saying other cultures don't, but I can't speak to that. The incentive to not be an asshole is lower every day, while incentive to be an asshole never faces a downturn.
I also think that people in general are terrible judges of character. You see an asshole or you see confidence, because that's what you want to see. To be able to properly read another person, you have to be accountably introspective, which most people find revolting. People don't want to think, about anything, too hard. Whatever is easy and instinctual is what the truth is, as far as we can tell.
Women falling for men who are assholes, which is not uncommon at all, is an example of this. However, an even better and even more common example is men falling for women who are assholes. Last but most of all, is assholes falling for each other.
Confidence is overrated. Give me someone who is uncertain. Someone who feels like they don't know or understand anything as well as they need or want to. It means they're looking for truth instead of just using it like the nearest blunt object.

I relocated to Japan, and have been here for many years now. I was thinking the other day about the contrast between the way Americans act when meeting new people versus how Japanese people act. I recall that it always felt like a lot of Americans defaulted to a certain type of "outgoing" personality when meeting new people. This always seemed like people acted in a way they think it means to be extroverted/confident, and it came off as slightly obnoxious and always talking. Although I think the reception to that was positive, and thats why people act like that. Perhaps American's just tend to prefer that sort of archetype over a more humble/meek person.
11
u/OddBranch132 19h ago
Somehow the loudest person in the room is "right". Confidently incorrect is too common, and too often rewarded, in the U. S.
5
u/Commander_Syphilis 17h ago
It is one thing that's always struck me as a none American.
I remember covering cultural distance and various business cultures around the world at uni, and one example we were given was British people interviewing for American firms and vice versa.
Broad generalisation but British people when interviewing for Americans come off as weak and unconfident candidates because they don't stress their skills enough, whereas what American candidates see as confidence in their skills the British find arrogant and slightly inauthentic.

Nothing is less sexy than someone with no self confidence. Well, almost nothing. When you can't even advocate for yourself, how do you advocate for your partner?
18
u/GalaXion24 21h ago
Confidence is situational and many people do find other people being shy or anxious or vulnerable to be cute.
It's also quite normal to be perfectly able to stand up for yourself, perfectly willing and able to stand up for others, and still be nervous about relationships, approval, rejection, etc. It is deeply vulnerable in different way.

Women who get into non-permanent relationships tend to repeat the "type" of their partner, a LOT. Not 100%, but it's a strong pattern. Doesn't matter if the past partners are, good, bad, kind, mean, clueless, smart... the pattern can be broken, but while dating you're more likely to run into "the pattern" of relationships that don't last.

Most everyone is vaguely attracted to confidence- especially women seeking men, as there is still an element of hoping the partner will provide safety and stability that the reverse scenario doesn't quite look for.
Unfortunately and inevitably, the people who have the most confidence are often the most stupid and/or selfish. And those with poor experience or esteem fail to avoid them

I read it the same way, but it might be because french is my first language and « concentrate » can also mean « focus » in french and it’s a common saying to say to someone « concentrate toi » as on « pay attention to what I’m saying ».

I fear this would work on me. My husband was this level of cocky (although he never mentioned other women, just cocky in a different way). Of course, that facade faded eventually, but it was kind of a nice contrast to the man I dated before him, who had the personality type of Eeyore.

u/dibbiluncan 20h ago
Lois here.
This is probably the beginning of a short-lived but steamy situationship. I dated a guy like that once (okay, five times, maybe six), and I can confirm this type of man will rock your world… for a limited time only. He’s not looking for something serious, but it’ll probably be fun while it lasts. Intense. Passionate. Romantic on the surface, but shallow.
He’ll make her feel sexy and special, but as soon as she catches feelings, he’ll move on to the next girl. He’s asking her to focus on the moment and stop worrying about the past or future. This one is at least being pretty upfront about his intentions, but she’ll probably get her heart broken anyway. C’est la vie.
