Up until this morning, I thought the last time I was homeless was going to be exactly that the last time.
I was homeless from 16–22, and it was rough. Really rough. When I finally got out of it, I made sure everything around me was as permanent as I could make it because I never wanted to go through that again.
Back then, I did it mostly alone. I didn’t really ask people for help. I researched what support was available in my area, used what I could, and figured it out.
But I’m 33 now, and I don’t have the same body or mind I had back then. I know I can’t survive another six years like that, and I don’t want to try.
So this time, I want to actually ask people for help before I run out of options. Family, friends, even people I haven’t spoken to in weeks, months, or years. The problem is... I genuinely don’t know how.
How do you start that conversation? What do you even ask for? How do you reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a long time without it feeling like you’re only contacting them because you need something? What kinds of help should I even be asking people for?
I’ve already started going through the traditional routes, applying to places and reaching out to housing resources. I also have a couple thousand dollars in savings, but I currently have no income. My absolute last-resort plan is buying a cheap car and sleeping in it, so I’m looking into that too.
Right now, though, I want to make sure I ask everyone, everywhere, and explore every option I have before I get to that point.
So I guess this post is step one: How do you ask for help when you’ve spent your whole life making sure you never had to?
