Humor POV: Jmods are proposing a new wilderness update.

u/Bakugo_Dies 3h ago
Many players don't like content where the design is to be interrupted constantly. Surprise surprise.

u/SomethingWetAndMoist 2h ago
What do you mean players don't like being sniped by bots and PK'd seconds later by someone world hopping looking for victims????

u/spacepizza24 5h ago
Until the meta way to escape from and engage with PvP isn't world hopping I don't see how the attitude towards it will ever change.
If the intended way to engage with wilderness PvP is to logout and switch servers I'm sorry but that's not engaging with the game I like.

Without any context at all, having been away from the game for awhile now, I feel totally confident in assuming that it's entirely based on "incentivizing" non-PVP focused players with new resources and maybe clogs that are unobtainable elsewhere.
Perhaps they'll alter death or multi-combat mechanics in an attempt to give the victims a fighting chance - which of course we all know they'll never truly have.

Cat and mouse games are only fun if the mice vastly outnumber the cats
18
u/Magres 1h ago
Also when people actually willingly play as the mice. Being a slippery little weasel is fun, but not when it's an obligatory obstacle to something I'm trying to get done. I'm down to specifically go out and play a mouse role and be hunted and try to evade hunters, I'm not interested in being harassed while I'm trying to get my stupid mage cape quest done.

i love the idea of being a slippery little weasel

u/DivinumX 5h ago
I don't understand why Jagex can't understand that cat-and-mouse style gameplay isn't very engaging and fun for a lot of people. We tolerate it because they make the rewards too good to ignore. And the worst part being that fighting back is usually futile and leaves people, especially ones who are new with little wildy experience, vulnerable to skull tricks.

The funniest part of pkers claiming they’re pvpers is that whole dynamic. Most people run away cause they find pkers annoying. When they finally meet someone who can actually pvp most of them melt. Personally I just 3 item or rags. In places like zombies you dscim spec and watch them die to mobs. In other places? Just abusing sight mechanics til you can logout or trying to anti-pk them.
It takes a certain personality type to want to cat and mouse people in the wildy all the time that don’t want to play your game. Then you’ve got the pk clan aspect with discords, world hopping, and alert bots they run alts for. The whole area is lame because of that.
100
u/Level69Troll 5h ago
Single lamest thing of the wilderness is the alt account "flock cameras" I call them. I get why people do it and I dont know how they can effectively fix that, but it just kills a certain aspect of the idea of a PvP hotzone

This one is on Jagex for designing the bosses in such a way that any pker approaching has to go into the cave which gives anyone inside several seconds to teleport if they have a scout outside.
I'm not saying the old versions of the wildy bosses were good, but one upside was that they didn't have this issue at all.

I have never PvP'd in my life. I killed a dude ambushing me on the way to KBD the other day just by trying. I still hate the concept and wish they would clean up some of the cat and mouse loot pinata stuff but you are right, a lot of these guys just collapse.

I don't understand why Jagex can't understand that cat-and-mouse style gameplay isn't very engaging and fun for a lot of people.
I'd say it can be engaging. I have deeply enjoyed EVE online for example. But in Runescape wilderness is just so much worse because there's a lot of garbage mechanics like people hopping on you or projectiles being visible beyond character render distance, or even the ability to completely hide your power.
For example on Revenants you just dip (log, run or tele) every time you see ANY player, and that's simply because you have like one second to react. If you can't instantly tell where is the player and how threatening he is, you just don't risk it, it makes no sense. And that one second is all the difference between dying and losing everything and living.
In EVE you can see when there's someone coming and you can make a very educated guess on what's their power and intention. The time you have to react is far greater, and you know where they're coming from. I've been doing exploration sites in wormholes and hostile null for several years and I've had blast playing the mouse in "cat and mouse" game. In Runescape? Fuck no
16
u/LezBeHonestHere_ 4h ago
Even in Eve when someone decloaks right next to you, most cloaked ships have 5-10 seconds of targeting delay before they can even start locking you up, and then it takes longer after that to lock onto you. Then if they're still in range they can "teleblock" you. In addition to that, if they aren't cloaked, with d-scan your range of vision to see who's around you in the same area is (random example) as if you could see as far from crazy arch to bandit camp. Maybe even to ferox enclave honestly. 13 AU is a big % of some systems.
In osrs it's 1 game tick as soon as they appear on your screen before you get tb'ed and your range of vision is like 15 tiles lmfao.
I don't mind the wildy myself because it's basically 0 risk compared to playing in Eve, but you can really tell the pvp mechanics are not up to date with how the game actually plays right now. People are way way faster and more dangerous than they were in 2007.
13
u/superfire444 4h ago

And that one second is all the difference between dying and losing everything and living.
This also means you have to teleport every 1-5 minutes. It's legit insane how often you encounter other players.

u/Airtwit 5h ago
As someone who has won eve online i have very similar thoughts.
The type of ffa PvP you have in the wilderness, is in many ways very similar to the ffa PvP of eve, with similar consequences.
But in the area of mitigation/counterplay eve is a whole game designed around this core mechanic.
In osrs it only exists for historical reasons, and the whole combat system has really outgrown PvP (as evidenced by all the niche interactions)

u/Magres 4h ago
The way you have to flee instantaneously is also a bummer because it kills the possibility for POSITIVE player interactions in the Wilderness, too. Environments where players can fight or cooperate are fertile grounds for great stories. When I was doing Wildy bosses for my diary and pop down the hole to the scorpion boss, before I could even write "friendly, lets duo the boss" the other person was getting the fuck outta dodge as fast as possible. I don't blame them, either, it's the correct play, but I think it'd certainly be more fun if there was any room for us to have a little room to play Prisoner's Dilemma with the boss loot.

Genuine question, but are players getting skull tricked even with the skull prevention setting? I can understand if they're so new they don't have the setting on, but shouldn't the average joe be totally safe to attempt fighting back?
16
u/M3rktiger 5h ago
I saw a post a while back about someone almost getting skull tricked into the abyss before catching on before it happened.
So yeah, can still happen, which is crazy.

8
u/M3rktiger 4h ago
Abyss gives you a skull when entering unless you wear the abyssal bracelet. I don't remember the exact details of the post/the idea but I do remember the abyss was involved. If you die of poison/venom inside you lose everything for example.
8
u/steele578 5h ago
No. You cannot get skulltricked with skull prevention on. Anyone who says otherwise is making shit up or doesn't know what skulltricking is.
You CAN get lured, and a lot of people do. But you cannot get skulltricked. The average Joe is completely and totally safe to fight back when they have skull prevention on. I fight off or anti-pk 90% of the PKers that come for my iron at Calvarion. Spindel PKers are fuckin tough though.

That is solely on the carelessness of those players and nothing to do with jagex or "incentives" or pvp dynamics.

it's a pretty iconic part of 07 RuneScape I guess. But it is miserable. Doing wilderness content efficiently involves using alts with plugins to basically act as a security camera so you can avoid pkers altogether. It's incredibly tedious and annoying
PKing is also disproportionately punishing to inexperienced players. The whole system basically preys on noobs who don't understand what's going on. Anyone who knows what they're doing won't risk enough to make it worth pkers' time
I don't really get it because people who actually want to PVP can, and do, just use PVP worlds to fight each other. If you actually love PVP there is plenty available. Wildy is mostly just a noob trap or extremely tedious pvm area
→ More replies (1)2
u/Unlikely_Bank73 1h ago
they probably understand it, the issue is that its the only thing that works in a way that isnt abusable. the one thing they know works worse is creating areas for pvp specifically with decent rewards. so until we find something better then this is all we can reasonably expect
→ More replies (38)6
u/BlueSentinels 5h ago
The cat and mouse gameplay could work if they were willing to compromise on the item drops. If you only lost all your food/runes/arrows in a wilderness death (without a skull), people would be much more willing to go in and do the content. Yeah you could get killed but you wouldn’t lose the items you worked hard for and you could legitimately fight back.
But such a change would never pass because PKers don’t want a fight, they want a loot piñata.
You could also still incentivize PKing with bounty keys which have a value equal to the bank value of the PK’d individuals gear.
When PKing came out it was pretty much entirely voluntary for any side as there was very little content locked within the wilderness.
17
u/joncrompy 5h ago
A huge problem with trying to change the reward structure is that Jagex wants it to be rewarding to Pkers, but if the reward doesn't come straight from the victims pocket then the reward system can easily be abused.
Early versions of bounty hunter were abused like crazy and it took Jagex years to design a better version. Even then, the current version of bounty hunter is still getting abused using bots in low population worlds. They're in a lose-lose situation so long as they prioritize the profitability of PKers.
6
u/Far-Cookie2275 3h ago
You're right, but the sad thing is your suggestion won't work because people will just game the system to make money.
PKing never used to be an issue back in 2004–2006 because the risk was maybe a few hours of work, a dragon weapon and some rune. It was simple and fun, and you weren't scared to die. There wasn't much outplay involved and almost anyone could do it. You could join a clan, have a war or just have fun at Mage Bank.
Nowadays, to even stand a chance against any decent player, you have to risk millions in gear, know your switches and have really good game knowledge, including how the tick system works. It's easy for players who are already used to it, but for new players or players trying to learn, it's a minefield.
The amount of game knowledge you need is insane. You need to know how all these newer weapons work, and which specs can suddenly hit with a different attack style, like the Voidwaker. It's just not appealing to a lot of players anymore and the fact that most people are there to do pve so your really fighting a fully equip player with less due to fighting a boss or having box traps or bones or whatever activity you are doing. The game has went from pvp to this monstrosity it was never high risk the duel arena was for that.

Not even close to true. When pking came out the hardest content in the game was kbd and kq so if you wanted to do anything other than that you were pking and it was very popular. Content creators got RuneScape didn’t make PvM content back then it was all PvP.
4
u/Person_of_Earth Bring back Funorb 3h ago
Back when PKing first came out, the concept of a Runescape content creator didn't exist, nor did the KBD or KQ.
- The Wilderness was released in August 2001.
- KBD was released in September 2002.
- KQ was released in September 2004.
- YouTube didn't launch until 2005 and Twitch didn't launch until 2011. What platform are you imagining Runescape content creators using in 2001?

Honestly, the only wilderness update that I’d really be behind would be something that could get edgeville PvP going again. Specifically like med-low level PvP in edgeville.
42
u/Srcunch 5h ago
I always said they should find a way to emphasize F2P PvP. RSC’s F2P wilderness was as packed, or more, than anywhere else in the game. Dying fully geared in F2P would be like 100k. The combat is easy and straightforward. You give people trying the game out another lane to explore. Alts are free. Edgeville is packed and we all win.
48
u/Maleficent_Ad_5763 4h ago
Game is understood and meta gamed to death. Edgeville pking as a kid was awesome, but its gone and will never be back. Thats just reality.
8
u/JunVahlok 3h ago
Yeah the dynamic is just totally different. We were 8 year olds playing in computer labs, people still argued about whether maces were better than scimitars & a guy in warrior helm with a dds was the most intimidating sight north of the Jolly Boar. That's not really replicable nowadays where you're still a noob if you haven't invested 1000 hours.

I vote no to any wilderness/ PvP content that involves needing pvm stuff or dropping pvm related uniques.
I vote yes to all PvP updates that are for the pk end of the game, involve bh, PvP only rewards or mobs that drop only gp/resources that I can get elsewhere. It’s simple.
No pvm related uniques in the wilderness, it should be for pvpers, better xp training methods, or resources at accelerated rates but otherwise obtainable outside of the wilderness.
If it meets that criteria I vote yes, if not I vote no.
11
u/Serious_Tradition269 4h ago
Even if I think wildy might deserve its own unique like the voidwaker, I full agree with this just based on the idea that pvp is forever stuck at an impasse now. There is so much outrage against the "being forced into the wilderness" concept that anything even tangentially pvp-related is getting spite voted forever.
No non-pvp uniques in the wilderness, just high xp or gp/hr, get rid of the idea that you're ever forced into it for any item, and then you can actually work on pvp again without that tainting every discussion

The wilderness problem is that its main purpose is for max level rich tricked out skilled PVPers to ice barrage people 30 levels lower than them who are wearing nothing & have 1 knife & a spade on them.
The gameplay here is just.. hope no one sees you or you instantly die.
It's like this in all MMOs that have PVP. If you're playing WoW, PVP on just means that max level characters in endgame gear spawn kill you while you are a lvl 5 until you quit.

My issue with the wildy as a pvm player is largely the same as a lot of sentiments already expressed in this thread. For the people coming to pk me or others, it is so clearly largely not about having a pvp experience. When someone pops in wearing rag ass gear to kill players doing chaos altar as an example, they're pretty explicitly doing it just to ruin someone else's experience. They aren't in a pvp gear setup, they're just standing there with an addy crossbow "pking." They aren't looking for a fight, they're just being rude.

It's so funny seeing this reaction having watched the podcast because Ayiza suggested two things * Removing all clue steps from the wilderness and having a dedicated "wilderness clue" (which he was non-specific about the implementation of) * Disabling PvP in the wilderness on a large number of worlds and substantially reducing the drop rates on those worlds to compensate.
It was TPapa who suggested outright disabling the wilderness entirely on a large number of worlds which is what people are reacting negatively to (because it would only make the problem worse)

I just want PvP in boss arenas to really involve the boss. My favorite Gielinor Games fight was two people murdering each other in the middle of Huey's Arena which was a really fun twist. Change Wilderness boss fights to hyper-aggro on skulled people to change the dynamics of the fight instantly, giving the PvM-er more of an ability to fight back. You wanna fight people in the bear lair? You better be ready to deal with the bear.

There can be systems built for a minority of players that are good
(though wilderness depends greatly on an unwilling prey being coerced for the sake of the predator. that's why its bad for people who don't want to engage but "have" to)

u/Emotional-Station153 4h ago
Not if it's at the expense of the rest of the players, which PKing is. Parasitic game design is always bad game design.

Not a bad shout compared to all the crying about being scared to die occasionally while going to high reward content. Wildy only clues that if you get a clue in Wildy, all steps are in the Wildy and you get higher chance of rares or just simply extra rolls on the clue. And then all non Wildy clues don’t have Wildy steps. I don’t know any pker that is interested in killing clue steppers, they don’t risk shit except for the super rare times they have tonnes of law runes on them or something

World of Warcraft did it for world PvP and it worked well. So less xp and worse drop rates seem good. It balances out anyway because you don't need to be afraid of losing items so can bring best gear to speed up kills.

u/Mortress_ 4h ago
And since you don't really lose anything by dying you can just play with pvp toggle on and engage in PvP once in a while, if it gets annoying you can go back to a major city and toggle it off. Its the perfect system

Idk why jagex are so obsessed with the pker vs pvmer dynamic. If you want to pk then go to a pvp world, LMS, or bounty hunter

Yup. Too many clue steps, achievements, bosses, etc are available In the wildy for no reason besides to incentivize becoming a victim to pkers. Wildy was great content back when people would actually fight eachother. Nowadays it’s just dead content. Go to pvm worlds if you really want to pk

I hope the new wilderness is to allow pvmers to turn off pvp. Why is pvp dead? Well there is only a small portion of the game who actually enjoy pvp.

Well Emir's Arena is dead and bugged out still with almost no rewards that should be fixed first. Fight pits also badly needs an update

PvP has potential, dead man all stars is a sign of that. But the wildy is an anchor, nobody wants to engage with it. Jagex should look outside the wildy imo

As long as PKers have blighted supplies, no worldhopping cooldowns, singlecombat+, and the ability to unskull themselves, I will vote no to anything that could benefit them.

I just vote no to all wilderness content. Two times getting harassed by a group while doing wildy slayer (slurs included btw) is all it took. No content for yall.

I remember when people would complain about wilderness PvP/ PvM updates on this sub they would just be told “There’s a warning when you cross the ditch” or “If you don’t like it, don’t go into the wilderness”, or something else along those lines. Interesting to see a 180 on this from such a renown “conservative” community.

I love when PVPers say "if you dont like it, dont come here" and most ppl dont, and the wildy is dead, then they go real quiet. Or they say stuff like "you can fight back as a pvm-er, we risk more stuff than you" nobody wants to fight back, my dude, thats why the place is DEAD. Also if my only counterplay is freeze and log out and walk away from the game, now thats REAL GAMING right there... They made an extraction shooter called Arc Raiders. Its kinda strugling right now, cuz majority of the ppl are not doing pvp. And it was literally advertised as PvPvE.

It kills me that players act like the wild is the only PvP in the game, and its extreme hate has infected all aspects of player vs player, to the point that even PvP worlds and mini games get almost 0 attention. Jagex threw in the towel when they just added rotating pvp worlds so now the few players that do want to engage in PvP (not cat & mouse) get unreliable worlds every other week, or in some players cases pretty much never.

People in this thread are begging for an edge-style PVP mode and don't even know about Bounty Hunter.
Yeah, Jagex could update the wildy and fix it. But a bigger problem is people don't even know about other PVP modes. Jagex could easily do weekly events at BH or weekly events at PVP worlds to bring in new players and show them that not everything is "cat and mouse".
Instead, Jagex does nothing and now we have a thread full of these players saying "I'm voting no to every PVP update." It's so sad, man. OSRS PVP is so fucking sick.

If they made it so you cant hop while logged in the wildy that would fix a lot of hate for it. If you’re logged out for 5mins you get booted to the border.
Boom fixed a lot of ambushes for ya and maybe revived border pking

Good luck finding a world for wildy bosses, enjoy the run back every time someone is there. I'd personally skull but this comment section reminds me why most people won't.

Yeah I'm good. I started doing the Wilderness Agility Course and logged in on my train ride home from work looking to get a few laps in. Not even a second after logging in I get PK'd. I'm not mad because I got killed (I didn't lose any real loot, just food), I'm annoyed because I didn't even get a chance to click past the initial screen after logging in before getting killed (I keep a low health bar to reduce the damage taken by failing obstacles)
If there's any changes to be made to the Wilderness, make a 5-10 second grace period after logging in where you can't get attacked. Feel free to make it where you can't world hop or log out immediately as well but at least let me see I'm about to get fucked before I get fucked

You really should keep full health, you get a free food every lap if you have an open space so any damage you take should be healed and fish is replenished each lap

Adding PvM content to the wilderness does not add new PvM content. It adds new Pk'er content.

On a positive note, I do like that there's always at least someone fighting the Wildy fight at Jagex. Y'know it's a small community but there's still someone who's going to bat for them. I just find it fascinating that it seems to be the hill they'll die on. It makes me curious how much income PvP content actually brings to the game, if they're still trying to sway people towards it.

u/EdumacatedRedneck 5h ago
A lot of pkers have multiple accounts to pk in different brackets. You'll be fighting a pure clan and after they get cleared, they'll immediately log in with their mains right after to attack you.

The wildy approach has always been flawed. Its not PvP, because that already exists. This is PKing aka not a fair fight for the person they are trying to lure to the wildy to do content

This is the truth OSRS pvper's desperately do not want to hear. PVP in OSRS is equivalent to smurfing below your rank in real competitive games and ganking STV on a 60 in wow. The entire game mode is based around only looking for an unfair fight you can win and running THE SECOND it looks like you might not win that fight. Its genuinely pathetic.

Emirs arena requires you to click through 12 menus every time if you want to find a match.
I wish some basic qol could come to the pvp scene and then i might engage with it. Currently its easier to hop worlds then have to navigate that ui.

Genuinely, what's so hard about going the route of RS3 here with the Wilderness rework? If it's about the reward but getting no risk, why not just tune them since lets be honest the Wilderness is not for PvP, it's for PKing.

I absolutely despise the freeze mechanic in pking. I think it makes pking so damn boring. With that being said, the freeze log is the most satisfying way to escape lol
12
u/Frick_KD 5h ago
The duration of it is so frustrating

u/Mossieoak 5h ago
It really needs a counter of some sort. I think I would actually engage in pking if that existed.

dd to log is not fun and is just rolling dice to land a freeze before you get frozen - you can't even run unless you can lose LOS within 10 tiles which is impossible in most places in the wilderness.

Honestly I think the only bad part about the Wildy is multi. I might have a chance in a 1v1 to either kill or escape, but I have got 0 chance in anything higher than that. Especially when u get those 10 man groups killing you for your 50k risk repeatedly.

When the biggest PKer's post videos of themselves talking about camping multiple worlds all day long to stack someone out you wonder why nobody likes to go to the wilderness.
