History On this date in 1971, the Pittsburgh Pirates became the first AL or NL team to field all-Black and Latino lineup

From the BR Bullpen:

The line-up was not the result of a stunt, but was a genuine attempt by manager Danny Murtaugh to field his strongest line-up that day (regular third baseman Richie Hebner, who was not black, was not available). The team went on to win the 1971 World Series over the Baltimore Orioles with all of the aforementioned players getting significant playing time.

He also has a 1 WPA lead over Pete Crow-Armstrong (5.4). Note that WPA stats are purely offensive stats. In the 2020s, only 3 seasons have had more WPA: 2022 Aaron Judge, 2024 Shohei Ohtani, 2023 Ronald Acuna Jr. - All MVP seasons.

Analysis Both new Seattle RH OFs (Ward and Refsnyder) lost ~100 points of wRC+ as soon as they joined the Mariners

In a year where everything has gone wrong for Seattle (worst pitching staff in the second half, Raleigh + Donovan + Crawford + Emerson + Raley + Miller playing through injury), this stands out as exceptionally cursed.

Teams stack their lefties to face Seattle, and the RH OFs the Mariners brought in to deal with this both lost 100 points of wRC+ the moment they joined the Mariners. That's... that's all the wRC+ there is. That's all 100 points.

Not sure what's more impressive, Ward getting traded during a good year and turning into a pumpkin on literally day 1, or Refsnyder faceplanting so hard he retired midseason.

Other Yankees’ responses:

Aaron Judge: “He needs to stay out of that and not be telling people to throw at players and injure players. That’s not what this game’s about. Not too happy hearing broadcasters talking about trying to injure or hurt players. He needs to clean that up.”

Carlos Rodón: “It’s stupid to talk about because you’re getting beat. Pitch better, This is not the pat-on-your-back league, and we’re going to be nice to you. Everyone’s coming to take the food off your table, and they’re coming to take your money. That’s how this game is played. There are no nice guys.”

Aaron Boone: “I’m an old-school baseball guy, I’ve been around doing this forever. I respect some of the unwritten rules. I really do. I think they’ve evolved and changed some. At the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s right for my team and try not to get so caught up in what the other team’s doing. I felt like we did the right thing.”
