He was scummy with the St Louis Stuff but hes objectively a very good owner for the teams he owns. Wish the Giants had an owner like him to be honest. Ill bet the Angels will be back to being a playoff team fairly quickly
As much as I hate defending this dude, at least the teams he owns have won shit. Arsenal, Avs, and Rams have all won a championship in the last 10 years.
Right? Angels haven’t made the playoffs in over a decade. Even for teams I despise (not the angels), I acknowledge that’s far too long for fans to go with being in the playoffs of any sport. You just feel bad at some point
Rams, Avalanche, Arsenal, Nuggets all relatively stable and winning organizations. He has a pretty wide track record of success across multiple leagues. If I’m an angels fan I’d be ecstatic. He stays out of the way and gets them rolling.
This is coming out of nowhere right? I didn't think Arte was actively trying to sell at the moment. I know he had tried in the past, but decided to hold onto the team. Were there recent developments I had missed??
I don't think that applies to sports franchise. No one wanted to get rid of a team faster than Mark Walters wanted to get rid of the Lakers and he still managed to get $2.5B more for the team than he paid less than a year prior
I randomly met met someone this summer who's actually related to Arte, and as we were talking, he kind of hinted that because he's in that stage of life where he's getting things in order for the family, etc, he probably going to move on from ownership in the not too distant future.
He had already considered selling the team once before. Even though he ultimately didn't, you had a feeling this day would eventually come. It's just still a surprise when it actually does.
Sources are telling me last night shirtless college frat boys TPed and dingdong ditched his house while yelling "sell the team.", and that was the final straw.
All the major teams in his portfolio are healthy and have won recently. SoFi is a spaceship, regional sports network infrastructure. On paper this is as good as it gets. Must be nice..
This is probably the best news for Angels fans since they won the WS. Rams, Nuggets and Avalanche have all won titles within the last 5 years and are among the elite teams in their sports year after year. Angels will be legit within the next 5 years.
Funnily enough, 9 years ago Kroenke specifically said he didn't buy Arsenal to win trophies and was hated by Rams fans as he moved them from St. Louis back to LA. Kinda crazy how he's gone from one of the most hated owners to one of the most successful.
Congrats Angels bros. Kroenke may be a bastard but more in the Steve Cohen sense so hopefully he'll actually spend. Trout deserves at least one serious playoff push before he retires
Unfortunately this is probably too late for Trout. Arte actually did spend quite a bit on splashy quick-fix attempts that failed miserably. The franchise needs ground up infrastructure redevelopment that probably won’t pay off until the very tail end of Trouts career
I will always defend Moreno. Lots of owners don’t spend. Moreno spent plenty and the Angels were consistently in the top 1/3 of MLB payrolls in his tenure. He’s just an idiot and ran the team exactly the way the Angels FB comment section would.
I guess I’m not defending Moreno, but he’s a different breed of bad owner compared to the Jerry Reinsdorfs of the league.
I mean its ok to defend the fact the he was willing to spend money, unlike a lot of owners. It was just on some really poor player decisions especially in the Ohtani years.
John Fisher had offers for the team in the bay area but decided he didnt feel like appeasing his fans. I hope hes forced to sell so he can avoid bankruptcy
As a Rams fan…you wont hear from him. He stays in the background.
I understand people don’t like him, but he absolutely supports his teams, and he does it while letting the professionals handle everything.
Id go as far as to say he might be one of the more underrated owners. His business moves draw a lot of criticism (like moving the Rams out of STL), but he doesn’t meddle in the day to day.
Ok woah that's big. The Kronke's spend a ton but actually have championships to back it up. The Rams have a championship this decade and are the favorites for this year, the Avalanche have a championship this decade and are now constant contenders, the Nuggets have a championship this decade and are still in the fight for more, and Arsenal finally won the Premier League this past season and are going deep in the Champions League.
To my knowledge stl did receive the settlement money. It was in the 700m range though. Regardless, he’s 1 of 2 people who I’ll be celebrating their eventual departure from the mortal realm.
Probably an unpopular statement but Angels fans probably should hope the Angels are more valuable playing second fiddle in Anaheim in their old stadium because if they could be worth more in say, billionaire friendly Nashville in a new stadium.... Well we know what Kroenke will do
Kroenke is a terrible person but genuinely a great sports owner. He wants to win and he is willing to spend the money to do so. And he’s smart enough to get out of the way and let the smart people run the teams.
If he wasn’t such a genuinely terrible person and screwing the rams he’d be viewed as one of the best owners in sports.
Legit all 4 teams he owns have won atleast 1 championship since 2021. (Nuggets, Avs, rams, arsenal)
They only ban ownership of other sports in cities that host other NFL teams or are potential NFL cities.
So he had to transfer the Avalanche and the Nuggets to his wife and have his son run them as a loophole but since the angels are in market he can just buy them
Good for them, Angels are such an underperforming franchise that could be so successful with the right people. Shame that Trout or early Ohtani couldn’t benefit from this
