Hot flashes 🄵

• Upvotes

I’m 11 weeks post op, removed uterus and cervix. Only had one ovary and they kept it in there.

I’m pretty sure I’m having hot flashes at night. I wake up so hot and then I’m freezing (there is a ceiling fan on). It’s miserable and I’m exhausted from not getting enough sleep.

I’ve read the ovary can basically go into shock after surgery, and then start to work again. Has anyone experienced this? Not sure if it should give it more time, or talk to my dr.

Any suggestions in the meantime that could help?

Healing is wonderful

• Upvotes

Sharing for the women who are in the queue to have hysterectomy or have recently had the surgery. I just did a backpacking trip at 10 weeks post op. I followed the recovery guidelines, but kept moving as much as I could. I was cleared to go back to the gym (with weight, intensity, activity restrictions) at 2 weeks post op. Getting back to the gym was SO helpful. I had to modify, but my trainer worked with me to give me alternate exercises that fit my restrictions. I'm typically an avid hiker, and had to scale way back for this summer, but I didn't have to give it up completely.

If I can give you any helpful hints, it is to get moving as soon as you can. Let your body/pain guide you, and keep within whatever guidance your surgeon has given. Even if it is a leisurely walk around the block, your body will thank you for it.

Good luck fellow hystos. Best decision I've made.

Post oophrectomy issues advice

• Upvotes

Hello I’m a 35 f and 6 weeks post op for a bilateral oophrectomy due to pmdd and outflow issues. I’ve had a horrific 18 months and was so pleased to finally get my surgery after all the gruelling health issues. I had a hematoma that seemed to heal itself by week 4 and was doing well with recovery. I was doing my recommended physio after examination etc and generally feeling optimistic and hopeful. The past two weeks I started feeling really drained, spotting and my swelling started increasing again. All my baggy tops are tight at the moment then on Friday I suddenly had extreme pain where I could barely sit or transition from belly button to my back on my right side. I went to hospital and I had bloods and bladder scan they were fine but I had blood and high white cell count. Took the antibiotics for a uti and my pain reduced but I’m still bleeding. He was worried my mirena coil has migrated but I can’t get it checked by anyone I’ve been on the phone to my gp and to the gynae team who did my op. I’m feeling really fed up and low at the moment and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and can share some advocation tips? I need hope desperately right now 🄹

Recliner or no?

• Upvotes

We have a manual recliner I was considering moving into my room right by the bathroom but now I’m wondering if it’s necessary. I am a bed woman through and through, being in bed on my side is deeply comforting to me. But the other thing is I have a high bed that I cannot sit on and have my feet touch the floor. I got a step stool but I’m still afraid it’s going to be hard to get in and out of bed, but then I saw some people say they couldn’t operate their manual recliner to put the footrest down (for how long?)
Surgery is 9/18. It’s surgery month. Laparoscopic. Hi to all my September sisters.

Diagnosis x3 plus surgery 6 weeks later.

• Upvotes

I’m having a robotic assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy plus bilateral salpingectomy and endometriosis excision next week on 9/9.

Six weeks ago I was just a 35 year old mom of two on a four-year journey of trying to figure out the source of my constant pelvic pain and other symptoms. Now I am diagnosed with endometriosis, adenomyosis, and POTS.

Physically I feel basically the same (though my symptoms have worsened in the past 6 months) but emotionally/mentally I have a lot of complicated thoughts and feelings.

A sense of validation, relief, fear, and so much hope for the future. Also a lot of confusion - who even am I if the pain and exhaustion I’ve always used to define myself are not proof of my weakness but actually…my strength? My surgeon called me an ā€œendo warriorā€ and i felt major imposter syndrome. I’ve always struggled with my identity outside of being a wife and mother (two roles I absolute adore). With these diagnoses, I am even more confused.

Anyone else relate? Also happy to find surgery buddies as this will be my first ever surgery.

ETA: plan is to keep ovaries.

Nervous, grad school during recovery

• Upvotes

I'm nervous, surgery is next week, so it's feeling more real now. Classes start tomorrow. I've reached out to my professors and will be able to attend lectures online for a couple weeks, and they're all great about giving assignment information well ahead of due dates, so I should be able to stay on track. I don't have a regular job, but I am a research assistant and will need to continue that work through recovery as well. It's just feeling like a lot all of a sudden, and I'm not sure how to handle it. Four classes, all with group work, and 10 hours a week of coding survey responses.

I've had two other laparoscopic gynecological surgeries--endometrioma removal and then removal of the offending ovary a year later. My recoveries were extremely easy, but they were 6 and 7 years ago when I was still basically a professional athlete (circus performer). I'm in shape, honestly probably a lot healthier than I was then, but I'm 38 now and it feels different.

It feels like I should be blase about this, I'm going back to class, not hanging upside down by one hand 50 feet from the ground. But I'm worried that I'm overestimating my post surgery abilities.

I was single for those earlier surgeries, so I could just hang out alone in my room without worrying about anyone fussing over me or worrying about feeling responsible for another person's wellbeing. We're both neurodivergent. When I don't feel well I don't want to be perceived. My partner knows this, but I know that he's going to have feelings about me wanting to be ignored that are going to be hard for me to deal with. It's ridiculous and he's great, but I don't want to deal with his disapproval of me not wanting any of his electrolytes drinks or spending a lot of time on the couch with him. He's going to try to do all the great partner things, but I'm going to feel like it's an intrusion. The way it was scheduled, he would have been able to pick me up from the hospital after work, but he scheduled the full day off anyways, and that just makes me anticipate the feeling of intrusion. But like, he's just being a good and helpful partner.

And I'm just nervous in general.

I guess I'm just venting

16 months after my total laparoscopic hysterectomy update!

• Upvotes

I had my surgery on May 6, 2025, and wanted to come back and share a positive update now that it’s September 1, 2026.
Before surgery, I had adenomyosis, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts, primarily on my right ovary. That ovary had a cyst on it when it was removed. I was bleeding for months at a time without stopping, dealing with horrible pain and cramping, and my quality of life had become pretty terrible.
Now, almost 16 months later, I feel better than ever. I’m pain-free, able to do so much more, and actually enjoying life without constantly having to plan around bleeding or pain.
My only wish is that I could have had the surgery sooner. For me, it’s been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I knew I wanted relief, but being on the other side has made me realize just how much I was living with before.
Everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to share my success story for anyone who needs a little hope. I’m so grateful to feel this good again. ā¤ļø

15 weeks po, spotting and pain

• Upvotes

I had a total hysterectomy back in May, left only my ovaries. Healing hasn't been a particularly linear journey, but I had been progressing well, back to enjoying my life without restrictions. Last Thursday i began spotting -old coffee ground looking blood- no fever, but an ever growing fiery pain in my pelvis which has expanded to include my abdomen. My pelvic floor muscles are on guard and I genuinely feel like I have just gone through the trauma of a vaginal birth.

I was able to see my surgeon today and there is no issue with the cuff, it felt fine on examination, not torn or tender. There was blood present, but they could not identify the source. Ultrasound is scheduled for tomorrow...

I am spiraling, catastrophizing that it's probably an endo flare up and I am just destined to feel this terrible for the rest of my life.

My doctor said its unlikely endo would have returned this fast and extreme - but what else could cause this feeling?

What are your experiences? Tell me your stories Internet strangers!

6 week (almost 7) post op tomorrow

I've had a pretty uneventful hysterectomy and recovery journey. I was back to driving/working by day 5, and was told I could do basically anything other than heavy lifting or inserting anything into the vagina by my first post op visit (it was somewhere around the 3 week mark).

My next post op is tomorrow (almost to the 7 week mark). Im very excited to hopefully get back to intercourse tomorrow. I'm a little worried because my boyfriend is a bit larger than average in size, but if I am cleared he has agreed to take it easy/slow. We had a very active sex life before so we are both eager to get back to it.

Any suggestions? Im excited and scared.

Extremely round belly and now an outie, 12 weeks after vaginal cuff repair

54f full laparoscopic hysterectomy in Jan with a repair of a complete cuff failure in June. I've always been slim and very active with a flat stomach. Obviously I'm not as active this year so it's no surprise that I'm softer in the middle. But lately I've noticed that my abdomen is very round and protruding in a self contained way, and also my belly button is almost an outie. Is this a thing? Could it be a hernia from multiple surgeries? It is not painful. I've got a note in to my doctor about it. My weight has been stable, and I've just restarted at the gym.

You’d think I committed arson…

35f. 9wpo - had everything removed but the ovaries. Went private as I was told I’d get nowhere with the NHS. Had my first GP appointment post surgery today and prefaced it by saying I’d had a hysterectomy which could be contributing to my symptoms for the issue I was there for.

You’d think I’d committed the most awful of sins!!

His face just dropped and I got a barrage of questions…

You had a what done?
On the NHS?
Then what provider?
Why?
What were your symptoms?
What did they take?
How many children do you have?
What do you mean you have no children?
Have you been pregnant?
Do you have a history of issues with the uterus in your family?
What were your symptoms again?
Have you been pregnant?
You have, but you have no children?
Do you understand it’s a major organ?
And you don’t have children?

Dear lord! God forbid women have bodily autonomy. I said I am very, very happy with my decision and went on to discuss what I was actually there for. Hoping I don’t have to go through this every time I have an appointment now…

I had a robotic total hysterectomy, both fallopian tubes and ovaries removed, including a 10.6cm ovarian cyst, and deep infiltrating endometriosis excision. For me the worst part of recovery had been the co2 gas and severe postoperative nausea. I don’t think I was fully prepared for the pain of that gas!!!! It was brutal!!! I did a lot of walking because that was the only thing that helped me. I told my dr prior to surgery that I was worried about postoperative nausea and I wish they would have been more aggressive in dealing with it but it’s finally getting better. I started eating solids yesterday. My dr gave me prochlorperazine to help with the nausea. The side effects landed me in the ER, chest heaviness/pressure, racing heart/palpitations, extreme lethargy and confusion. I do NOT recommend taking that medication!!! I’ve looked into it a little since that trip to the ER but I had to stop because it was giving me crazy anxiety. As for postoperative surgical pain, it’s been minimal. If you have been living with adenomyosis or endometriosis or both, like me, your pelvic pain tolerance is most likely remarkably high. I keep waiting for the real pain to hit me but I’m guessing it already has. So far my take away is, the co2 gas will be your worst enemy, if you are prone to nausea, demand a proactive approach and don’t take prochlorperazine, and the surgical pain will be comically less than your preoperative pain if you have been living with adenomyosis and/or endometriosis.

Feeling super anxious and depressed the closer it gets

Hi all,

I'm 39, total hysterectomy but keeping ovaries. Sugery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I've been lurking here for the last few weeks and decided to post to the community to see if anyone else felt depressed before surgery? I understand that is a loaded and delicate question and all experiences are so very welcome if you are willing to share <3 I have seen some good tips and ideas and most importantly all the reassurances (thank you!) I bought a wedge pillow since I think that would have been nice after the open myomectomy a few years ago (it was supposed to be laparoscopic but the fibroid was too crazy and they had to switch to open). My partner is wfh and will be home all the time after we get back from the hospital, so I'm happy I'll have help. But I am overwhelmed with anxiety about this surgery and I think I've burned myself out with stress. I think it's helped kicked me into depression (along with all the other life stress). Yesterday I slept for 11 hours and felt so listless, and burst into tears throughout the day. I'm happy to be scheduled for a hysterectomy so I don't have to keep dealing with fibroids. I'm grateful I have a surgeon who didn't think twice or try to prevent me from having one as woman that's never had children in a red state (US). I'm grateful I have a better job and I get 7 weeks off of work instead of the 2 weeks last time. Life is going to be so much better, and the best place to have a medical emergency is when you're already in a room full of doctors. Logically I know all this. But I am SO anxious and scared. I have to have a colorectal surgeon present because of adhesions from the myomectomy. I have to get bloodwork and an EKG tomorrow maybe because of my venous reflux/lymphedema from an old leg injury? I have to stay overnight because I'm higher risk because of BMI is what it sounds like. This surgery is supposed to be laparoscopic but I'm worried it'll just turn to open again and it was such a long recovery last time and I lost a lot of blood during that surgery. I'm upset with myself for not knowing if I wanted a hysterectomy or not last time and wish I had just done it then. I have an extra therapy appointment today and we're just going to focus on the surgery and coping mechanisms. But golly I can't wait until this is over and to not have to worry about planning my life around heavy periods and anemia making me dead tired lol. Thank you for taking time to listen to me <3

Would writing a blog about my experience be beneficial?

Hi everyone,

Following on from the title, I would like to make clear my intentions for writing the blog; being to give back in someway to these communities on Reddit, that have given me comfort, a sense of safety and validation, in what has been a wild ride over the past 2 years due to Endometriosis and Adenomyosis. (My symptoms started around 11 years old, but in the past 2 years became unbearable).

I had my hysterectomy 3 weeks ago, and go on this group everyday, I genuinely don't know what I would do without it.

My idea is to share my hysterectomy journey, with one blog post per day, detailing how I feel mentally and physically and looking to end the daily blog post after my 1 year hysterectomy anniversary.

For some background, I'm 33 years old and had a radical hysterectomy (although managed to keep my right ovary), after having two surgeries in 2025 for endometriosis and PID. My journey is a little unique in that my two surgeries last year were in China, as I was living there and have some stories about my experience there.

I could be totally off the mark here, and my inner critic is like 'wtf do I have to add to this conversation' but since the first surgery, I've had a lot of time to reflect and made some huge life changes due to being chronically ill and (what I believe to be a factor for me personally) spending most of my life in chronic stress, being a people pleaser and generally being walked all over.

Overall, I feel as though having a hysterectomy and being chronically ill, is part of a wider conversation around misogyny in medicine, navigating being childfree in an increasingly misogynistic world with violence against women rising (I'm thinking the tradwife trend online) and in general how fucking hard it is to be a woman.

I'm waffling, but yeah I am thinking about writing the blog, but I only want to do it, if it would add value to this community. Goodness knows there is enough rubbish online.

Please let me know your thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated x

New here with multiple health issues

Hi everyone ,

I've been lurking ... to kind of prepare myself as I do know I will be having a total hysterectomy due to my problem. I suffered from endometriosis and pcos what feels like since I started me period at 9 yrs old. Im 47... without going onto a long story on how i got to where I am now.. ill spare the details of medically struggling to be heard all these years

..decades even. Fast forward to now upon discovery I had an 10 centimeter mass on my left ovary and 2 cm hemmoragic cyst on the right and riddled with scarring ... thos was 8 weeks ago..since then mass has grown to 11.5 .. I talk with my oncologist gynecologist on the 3rd ... Hopefully he will say its a go and soon. But today I go for contrast and noncontrast MRI assuming they want a closer look to see if anything is entangled with any other organs and etc. Please wish me luck?!?!? And bravery because MRI ' s terrify me ..( claustrophobic and am i the only one ) can I ask for some calming meds before I go in ?? Anyways .. upon all this they found out I have liver failure ..no alcoholic..noncontagious hepatitis cirrhosis.. happens that I won't the "lottery" in the dept as to 20 out of 100,000 people are diagnosed. Autoimmune disease that attacked the red blood cells of my liver since God knows when.

Im afraid of thos hindering him operating... has anyone else had multiple issues that paused surgery ? Or prolonged it ? This mass is growing and I feel taking it out will help me deal with the other side more efficiently... we do not know if its benign or malignant because I asked them once they take it all out then they can test it ... (why suffer with biopsies and such when its all coming out) he did however say it will not be done laproscopic but "old school" way is the term he used .. thanks for listening and any given insight...and luck and prayer you send my way.

Much love ā¤ļø

Surgery done, and she only weighed 52g!?

I recieved the official lab report today, and I just needed to voice my surprise that my uterus only weighed 52 grams. The organ responsible for ruining most of my life weighs the same as a couple of slices of cheese.

I dont know what I expected it to weigh, but this just seems insulting. HOW!? Hahah

surgery is tomorrow!!!!!!

I have been so excited and so looking forward to this but also so full of anxious energy and I haven’t been sure why because I am not specifically afraid of surgery

and then I realized it’s because the last time I spent any real time in a hospital, especially with IVs and beeping machines and wheely beds and all that, was nearly two years ago when I was the hospice caretaker for my mom :((

ugh I can’t wait for this to be overrrrr

sorry, I just had to get this off my chest

I’ve stopped gaslighting myself…

Hopping on here to share that since I’ve started tracking my symptoms, I’ve stopped gaslighting myself.

I’m scheduled for a hysterectomy later this year and it’s been difficult for me to admit that it’s necessary. I think when you live with chronic pain it’s easy to tell yourself that what you’re feeling is normal or not that bad.

That being said, hysterectomy is the only way they can perform necessary pathology and treat my symptoms. I’ve had two failed biopsies, because of challenging anatomy and have suspected adeno and endo, yet I still question everything.

Anyways, my whole point is that I started tracking symptoms daily in my notes app. I’m talking cramps, bloating, GI symptoms, migraines, anything that keeps me from feeling like I’m thriving and when I start doubting the direction I’m heading, I reference that list of symptoms. It’s been a good tool to help me recognize all that my body deals with and acknowledge that I deserve a better health outcome.

Thought I’d share, in case others are struggling with their situation.
