Timline for Healing

3.0k Upvotes

I've posted this in dozens of comments, but it was suggested I make this a separate post.

(edit: I want to add that this was my timeline for my surgery. Mine was a DaVinci laproscopic total hysterectomy (kept my ovaries). That's about as "easy" of a hysterectomy as there can be, so please keep that in mind when comparing to your own.)

Here is the timeline my doctor gave me:

2 Hours, 2 Days, 2 Weeks, 2 Months. then 6 months, 1 year.

2 Hours - Immediate post-op, where the highest risk is and where the highest pain is. I'll be in recovery and closely monitored and attended to. This stage's goal is to get me awake and my pain under control. I may not even remember this stage.

2 Days - Next stage down of risk. Is everything healing? Is pain manageable? Has urinary function returned? This stage's goal is to be able to eat and get out of bed, then walk to use the bathroom. That's it. Absolutely nothing more.

2 Weeks - Major immediate risks are essentially gone. Pain should be down to discomfort. Bowels should be functioning. Movement should be slow, but frequent. Goal here is to rest and recover. Get up frequently, but spend most hours in bed. Swelling will be prominent. Hormones will fluctuate. Fatigue will be intense.

2 months - Now we're moving. Basically out of the danger zone. Keep active, but listen to your body when you need to rest. This stage should be the first that starts to feel like "recovery". Swelling, pains, and fatigue will still be present but waning. Spotting/bleeding should have stopped.

6 months - Activity levels can increase to pre-surgical levels. At this marker the goal is to feel as good as I did before surgery. Now, this is important to me- because I didn't feel great before surgery. Hence the surgery. But this is the goal post that was set for me. By 6 months I should feel like my pre-op self. Hormones should have stabilized, surgical pain should be gone.

1 year - Here's the real goal. This is where the goal is better. Better than before surgery, better than before the adeno, my better-best life. Activity levels are my own choosing and it's time to spread my wings and fly, it's in my court now.

That timeline really helped me manage my expectations. Anytime I got discouraged my husband would ask something like, "Where are we at? 6 months already?? Hmm.." and then I would remember that it had only been 7 weeks.. and how that isn't even close to six months... (and then I tell him to shut up and mind his own business, I'm trying to be dramatic and he's ruining it with "logic")

(Potential trigger warning ahead, I'm about to be graphic/gory for dramatic purposes)

They fucking shoved a tube down our windpipe, forced our breathing, jammed tubes into every other goddamn orifice, inflated us like a literal balloon, sliced us open in multiple places, rearranged our guts, and ripped out multiple organs. In some cases cutting and pulling out entire sections around our organs, too, to remove all the tumors, and damage, and growths, and scarring, etc. Then they jammed everything back in, mopped up our blood and we got glued up and sent on our merry way. And somehow, after all of that, just a few weeks later, we're all wondering why the zumba class just isn't hitting like before. (is there even zumba anymore...idk). I mean... we all need to give ourselves a fucking break

Take a nap. Put your feet up. Take a deep damn breath. Rest, rest, rest. Healing is a marathon, not a sprint. We all made it back from the other side. Take your time and enjoy the view. We have forever ahead of us.

edit: dammit typo... "Timeline... Timeline for Healing.

December 2024 Edit: Just a quick check-in. I'm so delighted to see that my post has helped so many of you in some way over the years. I thought I'd post a quick check-in to let you know that it's now 4 years after I made this post, and I feel amazing. I was early in that timeline when I shared it, and now that I'm on the other side I can safely say it was a wonderful guide over that year of recovery, and it held true. By one year post-op I felt better. Better than I had in many years. Four years post-op now, and it all feels like a distant memory. Keep your heads up, friends. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

You’d think I committed arson…

35f. 9wpo - had everything removed but the ovaries. Went private as I was told I’d get nowhere with the NHS. Had my first GP appointment post surgery today and prefaced it by saying I’d had a hysterectomy which could be contributing to my symptoms for the issue I was there for.

You’d think I’d committed the most awful of sins!!

His face just dropped and I got a barrage of questions…

You had a what done?
On the NHS?
Then what provider?
Why?
What were your symptoms?
What did they take?
How many children do you have?
What do you mean you have no children?
Have you been pregnant?
Do you have a history of issues with the uterus in your family?
What were your symptoms again?
Have you been pregnant?
You have, but you have no children?
Do you understand it’s a major organ?
And you don’t have children?

Dear lord! God forbid women have bodily autonomy. I said I am very, very happy with my decision and went on to discuss what I was actually there for. Hoping I don’t have to go through this every time I have an appointment now…

Surgery done, and she only weighed 52g!?

I recieved the official lab report today, and I just needed to voice my surprise that my uterus only weighed 52 grams. The organ responsible for ruining most of my life weighs the same as a couple of slices of cheese.

I dont know what I expected it to weigh, but this just seems insulting. HOW!? Hahah

16 months after my total laparoscopic hysterectomy update!

Upvotes

I had my surgery on May 6, 2025, and wanted to come back and share a positive update now that it’s September 1, 2026.
Before surgery, I had adenomyosis, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts, primarily on my right ovary. That ovary had a cyst on it when it was removed. I was bleeding for months at a time without stopping, dealing with horrible pain and cramping, and my quality of life had become pretty terrible.
Now, almost 16 months later, I feel better than ever. I’m pain-free, able to do so much more, and actually enjoying life without constantly having to plan around bleeding or pain.
My only wish is that I could have had the surgery sooner. For me, it’s been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I knew I wanted relief, but being on the other side has made me realize just how much I was living with before.
Everyone’s experience is different, but I wanted to share my success story for anyone who needs a little hope. I’m so grateful to feel this good again. ❤️

It’s the final countdown

has been playing nonstop in my head. doo doodoo doo, doodoo doot doodoo…

surgery is tomorrow!!!!!!

I have been so excited and so looking forward to this but also so full of anxious energy and I haven’t been sure why because I am not specifically afraid of surgery

and then I realized it’s because the last time I spent any real time in a hospital, especially with IVs and beeping machines and wheely beds and all that, was nearly two years ago when I was the hospice caretaker for my mom :((

ugh I can’t wait for this to be overrrrr

sorry, I just had to get this off my chest

I got diagnosed with a complex, solid, ovarian mass back in June. It’s growing. It’s doubled in size in 10 weeks. It’s secreting hormones. To the point that my blood pressure skyrockets, I feel like I’ve had 6 cups of coffee, and the feminine rage emanating from me would likely kill a man. For months I said something was off, before they found it. My husband said I was just over exaggerating. He FAFO’d.

Had repeat imaging, it grew again. Has its own vascular flow. O-RADS now a 4. This free loading bastard is good chance of malignant AF. It’s going to have to come out. And now, the doctor says safest bet is to take it all out. All the lady bits. Cause it could be aggressive, and the uterus be thicc, so it might be malignant too. Won’t know til they take it all out and do the final pathologies.

And here I am, just now realizing I’m a woman in my mid 40’s, with no children. I spent my life adamantly not wanting to give birth, or to raise another human. And while I think I stand by that decision, I’m now recognizing I never can. And it’s hitting me…hardddd. I’m crying into my feral dinner over babies I’ve never had, never wanted, but will now never even have the ability to have. I feel unbelievably inadequate and sterile. Like we’re all born as inherent mothers, and I’m losing that part. And also terrified of chemo taking my hair. Nor do I do well mentally with several weeks of downtime. Staying busy and outdoor exercise is what keeps me sane.

Anyways, I’d like to name the mass and the thicc uterus, before we yeeterus. Thoughts?

6 week (almost 7) post op tomorrow

I've had a pretty uneventful hysterectomy and recovery journey. I was back to driving/working by day 5, and was told I could do basically anything other than heavy lifting or inserting anything into the vagina by my first post op visit (it was somewhere around the 3 week mark).

My next post op is tomorrow (almost to the 7 week mark). Im very excited to hopefully get back to intercourse tomorrow. I'm a little worried because my boyfriend is a bit larger than average in size, but if I am cleared he has agreed to take it easy/slow. We had a very active sex life before so we are both eager to get back to it.

Any suggestions? Im excited and scared.

Healing is wonderful

Upvotes

Sharing for the women who are in the queue to have hysterectomy or have recently had the surgery. I just did a backpacking trip at 10 weeks post op. I followed the recovery guidelines, but kept moving as much as I could. I was cleared to go back to the gym (with weight, intensity, activity restrictions) at 2 weeks post op. Getting back to the gym was SO helpful. I had to modify, but my trainer worked with me to give me alternate exercises that fit my restrictions. I'm typically an avid hiker, and had to scale way back for this summer, but I didn't have to give it up completely.

If I can give you any helpful hints, it is to get moving as soon as you can. Let your body/pain guide you, and keep within whatever guidance your surgeon has given. Even if it is a leisurely walk around the block, your body will thank you for it.

Good luck fellow hystos. Best decision I've made.

Recliner or no?

Upvotes

We have a manual recliner I was considering moving into my room right by the bathroom but now I’m wondering if it’s necessary. I am a bed woman through and through, being in bed on my side is deeply comforting to me. But the other thing is I have a high bed that I cannot sit on and have my feet touch the floor. I got a step stool but I’m still afraid it’s going to be hard to get in and out of bed, but then I saw some people say they couldn’t operate their manual recliner to put the footrest down (for how long?)
Surgery is 9/18. It’s surgery month. Laparoscopic. Hi to all my September sisters.

I started my clear liquid diet today along with MiraLAX prep, I was worried about being hungry but I just got the call to arrive at 5:45am, surgery at 7:30am, I said oh thank goodness it’s early! “You’re the first patient”, yay! I’m set for outpatient but I’m still going to pack a backpack just in case it changes. I’ve got my set-up ready, going to be hanging out in my son’s room since he’s got his small bed in our room and I want to keep meds away plus protect my peace during recovery! Almost GO time 🙌🏼

Update: I’m home!! Thank you so much my official hystersisters/misters 🫶🏼 I’ll post an update later. Good luck to anyone waiting their turns!

Women's health needs an overhaul

Im 36. Had a hysterectomy last October. Left both ovaries. Ever since, I have been trying to discuss changes in my body with my ob and every time I got dismissed. In June, I went for my annual. And again, I tried to have a conversation. I told her I am hot all the time, I dont sleep well, Im tired all the time, Ive gained 30 pounds despite eating well and being more active than Ive ever been. My hair is falling out by the handful. My legs are restless and itchy. Im cranky and blah and just generally dont feel myself. I asked her about the possibility of trying hrt. She noped me immediately. Said I was young and had my ovaries and it's impossible that they've failed at my age. Its impossible, thats just not how that works. Then she doubled down and told me if I wasnt happy with my weight I should eat less. I thought she had to be joking and I laughed, but she was dead serious. I brought a whole body and mind problem to my doctor and she told me to eat less. End of conversation. I left feeling humiliated and crazy. Last week I decided to make an appointment with my primary. She listened. Shared some personal experiences and recommended a supplement that might help in the meantime/alongside hrt if thats an appropriate avenue. She doesnt really practice women's health so she researched what all labs should be done and ordered all of them. All the basics- vitamin b and d, ferritin, metabolics- came back normal range. Lutienizing hormone came back WAY high, which points to ovarian insufficiency or surgical menopause. Still waiting on the rest of the hormone panel to come back to confirm. Seeing that so high was really bittersweet. Im glad we can move forward treating it and I can feel better. But it sucks that it could've been solved way earlier, and it really sucks to be treated nonchalantly. Maybe one day we will be able to walk into our doctor's appointments confident we will be taken seriously!

Feeling super anxious and depressed the closer it gets

Hi all,

I'm 39, total hysterectomy but keeping ovaries. Sugery is scheduled for next Tuesday. I've been lurking here for the last few weeks and decided to post to the community to see if anyone else felt depressed before surgery? I understand that is a loaded and delicate question and all experiences are so very welcome if you are willing to share <3 I have seen some good tips and ideas and most importantly all the reassurances (thank you!) I bought a wedge pillow since I think that would have been nice after the open myomectomy a few years ago (it was supposed to be laparoscopic but the fibroid was too crazy and they had to switch to open). My partner is wfh and will be home all the time after we get back from the hospital, so I'm happy I'll have help. But I am overwhelmed with anxiety about this surgery and I think I've burned myself out with stress. I think it's helped kicked me into depression (along with all the other life stress). Yesterday I slept for 11 hours and felt so listless, and burst into tears throughout the day. I'm happy to be scheduled for a hysterectomy so I don't have to keep dealing with fibroids. I'm grateful I have a surgeon who didn't think twice or try to prevent me from having one as woman that's never had children in a red state (US). I'm grateful I have a better job and I get 7 weeks off of work instead of the 2 weeks last time. Life is going to be so much better, and the best place to have a medical emergency is when you're already in a room full of doctors. Logically I know all this. But I am SO anxious and scared. I have to have a colorectal surgeon present because of adhesions from the myomectomy. I have to get bloodwork and an EKG tomorrow maybe because of my venous reflux/lymphedema from an old leg injury? I have to stay overnight because I'm higher risk because of BMI is what it sounds like. This surgery is supposed to be laparoscopic but I'm worried it'll just turn to open again and it was such a long recovery last time and I lost a lot of blood during that surgery. I'm upset with myself for not knowing if I wanted a hysterectomy or not last time and wish I had just done it then. I have an extra therapy appointment today and we're just going to focus on the surgery and coping mechanisms. But golly I can't wait until this is over and to not have to worry about planning my life around heavy periods and anemia making me dead tired lol. Thank you for taking time to listen to me <3

I’ve stopped gaslighting myself…

Hopping on here to share that since I’ve started tracking my symptoms, I’ve stopped gaslighting myself.

I’m scheduled for a hysterectomy later this year and it’s been difficult for me to admit that it’s necessary. I think when you live with chronic pain it’s easy to tell yourself that what you’re feeling is normal or not that bad.

That being said, hysterectomy is the only way they can perform necessary pathology and treat my symptoms. I’ve had two failed biopsies, because of challenging anatomy and have suspected adeno and endo, yet I still question everything.

Anyways, my whole point is that I started tracking symptoms daily in my notes app. I’m talking cramps, bloating, GI symptoms, migraines, anything that keeps me from feeling like I’m thriving and when I start doubting the direction I’m heading, I reference that list of symptoms. It’s been a good tool to help me recognize all that my body deals with and acknowledge that I deserve a better health outcome.

Thought I’d share, in case others are struggling with their situation.

Extremely round belly and now an outie, 12 weeks after vaginal cuff repair

54f full laparoscopic hysterectomy in Jan with a repair of a complete cuff failure in June. I've always been slim and very active with a flat stomach. Obviously I'm not as active this year so it's no surprise that I'm softer in the middle. But lately I've noticed that my abdomen is very round and protruding in a self contained way, and also my belly button is almost an outie. Is this a thing? Could it be a hernia from multiple surgeries? It is not painful. I've got a note in to my doctor about it. My weight has been stable, and I've just restarted at the gym.

I had a robotic total hysterectomy, both fallopian tubes and ovaries removed, including a 10.6cm ovarian cyst, and deep infiltrating endometriosis excision. For me the worst part of recovery had been the co2 gas and severe postoperative nausea. I don’t think I was fully prepared for the pain of that gas!!!! It was brutal!!! I did a lot of walking because that was the only thing that helped me. I told my dr prior to surgery that I was worried about postoperative nausea and I wish they would have been more aggressive in dealing with it but it’s finally getting better. I started eating solids yesterday. My dr gave me prochlorperazine to help with the nausea. The side effects landed me in the ER, chest heaviness/pressure, racing heart/palpitations, extreme lethargy and confusion. I do NOT recommend taking that medication!!! I’ve looked into it a little since that trip to the ER but I had to stop because it was giving me crazy anxiety. As for postoperative surgical pain, it’s been minimal. If you have been living with adenomyosis or endometriosis or both, like me, your pelvic pain tolerance is most likely remarkably high. I keep waiting for the real pain to hit me but I’m guessing it already has. So far my take away is, the co2 gas will be your worst enemy, if you are prone to nausea, demand a proactive approach and don’t take prochlorperazine, and the surgical pain will be comically less than your preoperative pain if you have been living with adenomyosis and/or endometriosis.

Hot flashes 🥵

Upvotes

I’m 11 weeks post op, removed uterus and cervix. Only had one ovary and they kept it in there.

I’m pretty sure I’m having hot flashes at night. I wake up so hot and then I’m freezing (there is a ceiling fan on). It’s miserable and I’m exhausted from not getting enough sleep.

I’ve read the ovary can basically go into shock after surgery, and then start to work again. Has anyone experienced this? Not sure if it should give it more time, or talk to my dr.

Any suggestions in the meantime that could help?

Post oophrectomy issues advice

Upvotes

Hello I’m a 35 f and 6 weeks post op for a bilateral oophrectomy due to pmdd and outflow issues. I’ve had a horrific 18 months and was so pleased to finally get my surgery after all the gruelling health issues. I had a hematoma that seemed to heal itself by week 4 and was doing well with recovery. I was doing my recommended physio after examination etc and generally feeling optimistic and hopeful. The past two weeks I started feeling really drained, spotting and my swelling started increasing again. All my baggy tops are tight at the moment then on Friday I suddenly had extreme pain where I could barely sit or transition from belly button to my back on my right side. I went to hospital and I had bloods and bladder scan they were fine but I had blood and high white cell count. Took the antibiotics for a uti and my pain reduced but I’m still bleeding. He was worried my mirena coil has migrated but I can’t get it checked by anyone I’ve been on the phone to my gp and to the gynae team who did my op. I’m feeling really fed up and low at the moment and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and can share some advocation tips? I need hope desperately right now 🥹
