Message from the Moderators Non Supportive Comments Are Out Of Control.

I understand we've been going through the holiday session and that it's one of the harder times of life, post loss, however... this is a support sub. It really is upsetting to see people (people who have used the sub for their own emotional support) to talk down to others, judge others, gatekeep others, attack others, question others, and worst of all, telling others they can't be here or post here.

If you have nothing supportive to say, move on.

If you see something that is a rule breaker, report it to the mods, Do not tell someone they don't belong or can't post.

If you disagree with how someone is grieving, keep it to yourself and don't break reddit's golden rule of "Don't be a dick". Move on.

If someone is talking about their loss, please don't challenge them or ask for proof of their ordeal. I've seen some of this lately and it's not cool. If you think it's somehow a scam, how bout dropping a line to mods and letting us check things out and discusses it. If we feel we need to act... we will.

Be nice to each other. If you can't be supportive, move tf on without being a dick. If you can't do that, we can help you move on.

We've grown as a community this Christmas season. If you're new here, please read the rules in the sidebar before posting. Use the drop down arrow on each rule to expand it to get the whole rule. If you've been with us for an extended time, drop a modmail if you are seeing something wrong. Help us maintain a safe space for grieving, processing, venting and supporting each other.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Grief Support Wiki

Hi everyone,

I've noticed an uptick in people asking for resources on grieving and supporting others through grief. As posts here do not always get a ton of feedback (a given, as we are a community in mourning) I want to give a gentle nudge toward our wiki.

We've compiled articles, videos, support groups, phone numbers and books on all kinds of grief and loss, supporting others, and taking care of yourself through such difficult times. This is a community resource - if you have something you've found helpful or would like to see added, please submit it to modmail for consideration.

A reminder, also, that if you need to chat real time, we encourage you to visit us in our active Grief Support discord channel.

Mom Loss Funeral

Today is my mums funeral and I don’t even know how to react or feel. I’m tearful and anxious, but I also feel completely disassociated. I love this special bean so much and I can’t believe she’s gone- it was so unexpected and she was only 52. I can’t wrap my head around not seeing her again, she was my best friend and I feel completely lost. Although I’m 30 years old, since we lost her I’ve felt like a 7 year old that is lost in a supermarket 💔 but I want to share her- Penny Cunningham, the funniest, silliest, goofball with weird little food obsessions and her intense love of her kids and pets. She always said she wanted to have 4 children (2 boys and 2 girls) and a load of pets- she definitely achieved both of those things. I’ll miss you forever mum 💜 I love you to Pluto and back

Comfort I cannot believe this is happening.

I have been married for 29 years. About a year ago I started going to our kids house (the two youngest share a home) every Sunday to chill, watch movies, hang out etc. my husband stays home with our dogs.

I went last night and had a great time. Came home this afternoon and the dogs were so excited to see me. I started calling my husband and he didn’t answer me. I figured he was taking a nap. I walked past his office and he was sitting in his chair.

I went into give him a kiss and I could tell right away he was dead. Oh my god my heart broke instantly. I feel so horrible. My husband is a heart transplant recipient and I have been with him always when something has gone sideways and this time I wasn’t. Why didn’t I stay home. I could have seen something was wrong and called 911. I feel like my life is over.

It’s time to go to bed and I sit and don't want to get into bed without him. What am I supposed to do? Despite his health problems he always made it through. He always survived. He was my world. I want my husband back. Please just let this be a nightmare - I just want to wake up and he is here. This time last night we were snuggled in bed together and now he is just gone. Oh my heart is broken.

Vent/Anger - Advice Welcome so fed up with people feeling “awkward” about grief

so my (28f) mom (70) died in december 2025 and my dad (73) died in july 2026, about 7 months apart. mom was expected, dad was sudden. it’s been destabilizing to say the least. i’m doing okay, and have a lot of positives to focus on. i’m therapized, medicated, I have an incredible gf and support system, my job is good, stable, and understanding. waves of grief and magical thinking are still happening and will for a while.

I took a grief-moon for the two weeks after his death (I had coincidentally had a vacation scheduled and my gf and I started it early, highly recommend after losing someone), and then took a week of bereavement for the funeral arrangements. last week was my first week back at work, and i’ve been slowly resuming “normal” life as best I can.

last week we had some friends over to watch a movie. one of these friends had already been awkward about my dad being in the hospital (he had a stroke so she thought it was a good opportunity to pivot the topic to her 14 year old crusty white dog who had just had surgery lmfao), so I had low expectations to say the least. I’m not close with her so I don’t really care.

she unfortunately arrives first. she comes into the apartment. sits down and says nothing about my dad. then proceeds to rant for about 10 minutes about how her gf of 6ish months broke up with her. thankfully our other friend arrived pretty quickly after that and we were able to change the subject.

schadenfreude aside, the fuck? being put in a position of having to pretend that I give a fuck abt someone who can’t put on her big boy pants and say “i’m sorry for your loss” is so wildly inappropriate. my partner was pretty annoyed on my behalf. it took every fiber of my being to not say, “you’ll be okay, you won’t die.”

I don’t want people to have to experience losing a parent while they are in their 20s, let alone both. it sucks. the day my dad died, we got home from the hospital and I cried so hard i was scared. I just wish people could tap into empathy without comparing the death of a parent to a fucking medically fragile dog or a break up.

Dad Loss I lost my dad today.

I’m devastated and so heartbroken. My dad tried so hard to be here longer and get better. He fought for us until the end. AML took him so quickly and his doctors were so useless.

My dad was brave and beautiful and loving and generous. He was kind and caring and so intuitive. He was my foundation and my everlasting support in this shit world and I’m feeling so lost without him.

Dad Loss I just want to tell you about my dad. ❤️

My father, Peter, died on August 11. We were all with him - my brother, mother, and I. We were holding him and telling him we loved him, and his favorite music was playing. After three difficult years with dementia, he got to go with love and support all around him.

And I just want to tell you about him. I got blessed in this lifetime with a marvelous, marvelous father. He was kind, emotionally aware, present, and loving. He was wise beyond belief, and was who I turned to for comfort and understanding. Even when dementia clouded him, he was still so full of love and joy. When I would call, I'd ask, "how are you?!" and he'd reply, "the better for talking to you!"

My dad was a professor for 30+ years, and married to my mother for 43 years. She was his caregiver until the last and he loved her fiercely. He spoke five languages (a total polyglot!), loved African proverbs, classical music, and Gordon Lightfoot, and deeply believed in this world and the beings on it. He was curious, generous, and deeply spiritual. He passed much of this on to me - which I cherish.

My grief has been vast and enormous and wide, but I also see him in me and everywhere. Once, when I asked him what I would ever do when I lost him, he replied, "we live on in you!" ... I am doing my best to carry that with me.

We laid him to rest with countless people around. He was a beloved and cherished member of his community, my family (which spans generations, cultures, and continents), and his loving church of almost 50 years.

I will miss him with my whole soul and already do, but I know I was so lucky to get to have him in this lifetime.

Once I asked, "what do you think of death, dad?" and he replied, "why, it's the next great adventure!"

So I hope you're having a good adventure, daddy. I will love you forever and see you in the sky and stars. Love, your pumpkin pie.

Thoughts on Grief/Loss And the days without crying resets 😥

I know that it's still "new" (only about a month, I'm trying to stop keeping exact count) but I can't believe that I can't make it more than two days without crying. And I'm not talking shedding a few drops, I haven't managed a more than a few hours with that, but the sobbing-crying...I thought I would be dealing better with that by now😔 and I just walked across the room and started sobbing. I'm going to look like an idiot when it happens in public and law of averages...I feel like I need to make a sign to carry around that says "I'm sorry I look like an idiot, I'm grieving" 🙄

Vent/Anger - Advice Welcome I(21F) have to pay over 2 grand to visit my mum’s grave and I’m finally processing the betrayal.

Upvotes

I lost my mum when I was 17 years old, and before then it was me, her and my older brother living together. After she passed away my grandparents immediately wanted her body brought to her birth country (in Africa), and being 17 and my brother being 21 at the time our protests fell on deaf ears. At the time I was emotionally paralyzed and to this day I barely remember flying to the funeral and the days afterwards, but almost four years later I’m coming to terms with how hard it is to not be able to visit her grave here.

I’ve never had a strong relationship with my grandparents, as they never came to visit my mum here in the UK, but to think in a decade and a half no one will be able to constantly maintain the upkeep of my mum’s gravesite drives me insane. I understand that my mum is also their firstborn daughter and they are grieving just as hard as me, but they also went against her wishes to be cremated when she passed.

I’m considering buying a headstone to at least have something that can bring me comfort, but I’m still heartbroken. If anyone has gone through anything similar or could share some kind words I’d greatly appreciate it.

Thoughts on Grief/Loss Be careful of who you let into your life after loss

I dodged a bullet with a man who tried to come back into my life after my mom passed away this summer. Please be careful of narcissists or other manipulators who think you are desperate after loss. He also knows that I'm from inherited money so maybe he had motives besides sex.

More details here. Basically I had a crush on an attractive and charming coworker. I lost my job due to funding and I asked him out after I left. I'll admit he showed signs of a drinking problem on the date, so I was thinking this isn't going to be serious. It was an enjoyable night. I decided to pursue other guys who wanted more serious relationships this summer.

I went out of town to visit my mom with cancer and she started declining. She passed away. I think he heard through old colleagues at work. He messaged how I was doing, seemed concerned how I was, said take care of yourself. Him reaching out surprised me and made me think he was empathetic and liked me.

After like 3 weeks, I decided to message him. It was more friendly at first and then he said he wanted to see me when I get back to town. I'll admit I was a little down and thought oh maybe he will be fun to date. I already knew we had chemistry. He started messaging me one night. He mentioned something he claims that we did together in April. I said I didn't remember that but I was pretty tired that night. He started freaking out and said I had a rotation and was confusing him with another man. Basically you could see his insecurities. I was able to calm him down and convince him I wasn't. And he was like "don't treat me like a tool" & I promised I wouldn't . But I awoke to a serious of nonsensical texts sent at 3 am like " transactional to you." He tried to spin it on me and say the night mattered more to him than me.. I apologized and he accepted it and said he just wanted to see me soon. Then again he continued with trying to sext me so I was thinking this man may not be serious and potentially has issues.

I finally got approved a group where women ask about local guys. He was on there a lot with women giving warnings. I spoke to 5 women and got similar stories. One woman said they thought they were in an exclusive relationship for 2 years. Turns out he cheated on her with at least 16 women and 3 said he was abusive. A number also agreed with the drinking problem and started fights about little issues. His ex wife got a restraining order when she filed for divorce (I found the public records).

Anyways I'm gonna figure out a way to end it without blocking him and him figuring out something is up. But be careful about who tries to come back into your life after loss!

EDIT: another man that I politely texted "i dont feel a romantic connection" 2 weeks ago tried to call me today too! Be careful of these energy vampires

Dad Loss This past Sunday was 5 years.

Hi everyone, this is my dad, Ken. In 2021 he lost his battle against GBM brain cancer at the age of 72. He was an iron worker, a runner and a lifelong rock hound. His favorite movies were “Blazing Saddles” and “The Princess Bride.” He became a local legend in our hometown known as “The Peace Guy” by going on long walks every day holding up a peace sign to every passing car. His favorite color was royal blue. He taught me how to tie my shoes. When I did color guard in high school, he volunteered to help build the props. I owe my love of cheesy 00’s cop shows to him.

I don’t know if I believe in a heaven in the traditional sense, but I hope wherever he is he’s surrounded by friends, family, nature and peach cobbler with vanilla BEAN ice cream (which he tried convincing my brothers and I was healthy ice cream).

He was 49 when I was born. I was 22 nearly 23 when he died. I so wish he could’ve been a part of everything that’s happened in my life since then, good or bad, and that he could be there for the milestones yet to come.

To quote his favorite book, “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran:
“When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”

RIP Dad

Advice, Pls My kids’ grief counselor just died

I lost my husband (their dad) 2 years ago after a brutal 6-month battle with cancer. This therapist helped my kids so much, esp my son who struggled (struggles) with suicidal ideation. Last week he didn’t show up to an online appointment, which was totally out of character. I feared the worst. Today I found out my fears were right. I‘m hiding this from my kids- they just can’t handle more right now. Maybe I’ll tell them some day. He was a wonderful person and a literal lifesaver. What the fuck is going on.

Ambiguous Grief 13m. my friend is dead and i talk to her everyday.

Upvotes

Im 13m she was 13f as well her name was myanna. We were friends since pre k. I have been into spirituality and she was too. She was really nice and always very selfless. We'd never be apart once. A few months ago back in march we were going to a local band concert because we were saving up for it. More of her because i made her. She didn't really want to go but i think she wanted to make me happy so she did. and when my mom was driving us there we got hit head on by a truck. Myanna wasn't wearing a seatbelt. When we got hit myanna flew straight into the windshield. I saw blood literally gushing out. My mom also died. I always blame myself. I lost 4 fingers. To cope i started sh. I decided to get a owigi board. I used it and tried to talk to her but she always answers in short words. I tell her how im sorry. I keep trying. No luck. Will update.

Dad Loss My dad died last night

The titles says it all really.

My dad was diagnosed with cancer back in Covid. He died last night after a month long stint in hospital with heart failure (a complication of his cancer).

I’ve been at the hospital most days for the past month and stayed with him for 10 hours yesterday. I read him a couple of chapters from the book he used to read us as kids and just stroked his head, held his hand, and told him how much I loved him. Eventually though I decided to leave because I knew he wouldn’t let go while I was in the room. He wouldn’t do that to his kids.

I’m just absolutely gutted for him. Nobody wanted to live more than he did. He also wanted to die at home but we couldn’t make it happen for him because he was too poorly to be moved. I just can’t bear the idea of him being sad or frightened in those final moments. He died with his wife at his side so he wasn’t alone, and she’s been the embodiment of a dutiful, loving wife throughout this whole time. I don’t know what I need to hear, I just need to share my sadness and anxieties I guess and know I’m not alone.

Message Into the Void Did you hear me today?

Upvotes

Hi girl did you hear me when I was humming the tune of Taotao series? I just checked that it's actually quite old tv show it was made like 40 years ago so much older than us but not quite as old as mom. Maybe you know everything now, or you have easy access to all knowledge or something idk. I bet you even understand English! Yeah I know you knew a few words! You had VERY good memory. I can't believe that the disease that's supposed to make you a lot less intelligent didn't have that effect on you😂 badass. I'm not doing too good here. It's boring without you, and I still haven't met anyone who has your sense of humor. And confidence. Guess what I actually haven't read stories to anyone else. That was our thing and I think I wanna keep it that way. Now I can say some things so yeah I actually got quite attached to you when you were a baby. Sometimes I wanted you to be MY baby and not our mom's xD. I had no idea how powerful mind you would have. And although you became blind, you saw more than most people see. I'm so grateful to have known you, you literally taught me how powerful a woman, or a human in general, can be. Thank you for being you, showing that you can say no I don't like that or ewww or that's stupid or he's/she's stupid. There are so few women who are as unapologetic as you, and most of them learn that very late in life. Anyway THANK YOU BADASS BITCH ROCKSTAR!!!💝🧚🏻‍♀️

Sibling Loss Feeling so alone

I’m feeling so alone. My brother left us four months ago. This week has been extremely hard. I cannot focus on my work, I used to love my job but now I just like don’t care. I really miss him so bad. He always balanced somehow my life. Today I got home and my husband was a bit upset and it somehow made me react so badly, I just started to cry because I have realised there is nobody out there anymore for me who truly cares. I have noone to call or visit when I feel alone. I do have my mum but she struggles with the grief too, we will never be the same as we were before when my brother was alive. The family we had is ruined. My niece is traumatized. Everything is collapsing. I really have a feeling I don’t want to continue although I don’t plan to leave. But it would be so easier to leave. Nothing matters anymore. No colours in my life anymore, no taste. All is numb.

Child Loss We should have seen it coming

Shaun was struggling. More than two years before his death, his mental health declined to the point where he asked me to get him help. I did, securing a counselor for him within two weeks and sitting in on a few sessions to offer any support I could -- even a few apologies for some of the stupid, stubborn missteps I made with Shaun throughout the years. I can't recall the entire process, but he must have seen a psychiatrist at some point because Shaun took medication for his anxiety. It didn't seem to make much of a difference, though, based on his continued erratic behavior.

About 18 months before he died, in December 2019, a suicide attempt finally made me and my wife, Shannon, aware of the depth of Shaun's problems. On that day, he skipped school and took a handful of his medication, washing it down with beer from our refrigerator. Shannon and I were both at work when it happened and were made mindful of Shaun's distress only because he had been ticketed for trying to steal alcohol from the local grocery store earlier in the morning. The police called Shannon to inform her of the incident at the store, and a subsequent call to Shaun, who was still conscious after ingesting the pills and beer, confirmed our fears: Our 17-year-old boy was in grave danger.

Shannon and I both rushed home from work and then hurried Shaun to the nearest hospital, where they pumped his stomach and monitored him for several hours. Behind the scenes, they searched for an open bed at pediatric psychiatric unit as close to our hometown as possible. About 10 p.m., they told us he would be transported by ambulance to a facility an hour away.

All of it was brutal. None of it seemed to help.

Shaun remained in the unit for four days, his mood alternating between disdain and despair. When agitation hijacked him, they gave him Klonopin, a potent benzodiazepine and central nervous system depressant, to calm him down. He returned home just before Christmas, promising to do better. I think he meant it, too, but broken brains often cause broken promises. His struggles continued and then intensified with the isolation of COVID and a broken relationship with his high school sweetheart.

You could feel the heaviness when you were with him -- could smell the alcohol on his breath when he came home at night.

His pain must have been unbearable. Alcohol, marijuana, and eventually other drugs became his way of dulling it long enough to get through another day.

Looking back now, I can see Shaun was already in a death spiral; however, at the time, my mind simply wouldn't allow me to believe I could lose my son.

I think that's because the death of a child is so profoundly unnatural that a parent's mind refuses to accept it. Even when the warning signs are staring you in the face, hope has a way of drowning out fear.

Advice, Pls All their stuff

Has anybody ever just hit a point after years where you think "why have I got all this stuff?" and/or "I don't want these reminders any more"

When my parents died I took so much stuff, things like 3 hair brushes, clothes ornaments, that suddenly feels so pointless.

I'll never use them, I wouldn't want them if they were still here, and tbh they'd go wth are you doing?

I don't mean anything keepsakey of family heirloom. I've filled my house with things that arent my style and serve no purpose other than getting in my way and genuinely being a storage fire hazard.

I don't know, guess I just need somebody to say it's ok to get rid of it? I know they would so why am I lingering?

Mom Loss Coming up on 1 year and grief has gotten heavier and more consuming over time

I know everything in grief is normal, and at the same time nothing is. I guess I just didn’t expect that 10 months would hurt more than 10 weeks.

I didn’t expect the more time passes, the more real it gets. The more you can feel they’re not coming back.

I still replay every moment in the hospital all day long, before I go to bed especially. I actually procrastinate laying down in bed for as long as I possibly can because I know how it goes now.

People don’t care about it anymore, they’ve actually in many cases forgotten about it and said very tone deaf things, when to me it feels so obvious like… don’t you understand my mom died, and this is such a huge part of who I am now…

I play pretend a lot, at work, with family, with friends, even with my fiance lately. I’ve never felt more alone, and I’ve never wanted my mom more.

I’m actively distancing myself from social media because it hurts to see the normalcy, people living the lives I feel my mom and I deserved to. I’m distancing myself from people too. My circle has shrunken, and it wasn’t very big to begin with.

I thought I’d have all of this motivation to live in the moment, not take time for granted, I’d say I almost romanticized my mom’s death in the early months to try to make it make sense. Like it was somehow going to make the time I have now that much more special or important or something, and that’s not the reality. The reality is it hurts. There’s a huge void in my life and I don’t feel seen the way I used to. I don’t recognize myself the same. I miss her, terribly. And all the time I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Watching my mom’s dad’s health deteriorate this year, and my mom’s mom not only just lose her daughter, but preparing to lose her husband too. Knowing I won’t have my nan for much longer, and I won’t have my mom to comfort me when she passes. My dog developed a heart murmur this year, my nieces entered their tweens and I’ve had to grieve that relationship even, the one with when they were young. Everything’s changing for me, and the world doesn’t feel like mine anymore.

I just wish everyone understood how big this is and the hold it has on me. Yet I don’t want to be pitied, I don’t want platitudes. I just want my mom.

Mom Loss Mom grief

Upvotes

I’m 22 and lost my mom last year, and my sister is wanting to have a wedding and is starting to plan everything. I know I should be happy and excited for her, and I know it’s unfair to her, but I honestly can’t help but feel miserable whenever the wedding gets brought up.

I’m just so fucking angry and upset that my mom isn’t here and won’t be at the wedding. She won’t get to see my sister get married or be there for any of it, and I can’t stop thinking about that. I don’t even want to talk about the wedding because it just makes me think about her not being there.

I’m also really struggling with the fact that I’ll never see my mom again. Like, ever. The only thing that brings me some comfort is thinking that maybe when I die I’ll see her again, but even then I don’t know what happens after death.
I know my sister deserves to be happy and I don’t want to take that away from her. I just genuinely don’t know how to handle all of this.
