Thank god they put a big red line otherwise you might get lost in that hallway

u/Routine-Arm-8803 19d ago

I fucking hate these pointless chases in the games .

143

u/Guilty_Ship_6799 19d ago

Yeah. Especially since there's usually no win condition. The target will always rubberband to be way ahead of you until you arrive at the destination you're supposed to be at.

55

u/PM_Me_FunnyNudes 18d ago

That’s why I appreciated the chase in AC2 (might be brotherhood) in one of the secret tombs where you can actually catch him and prevent him from warning the other guards if you do the chase quick enough.

Gives it actual stakes and a win condition and it’s way more exciting for it

u/xMaNrEbOrN7851 18d ago

Back when Ubisoft actually gave a damn about making good games🙄

Yeah that’s the worst part imo. There’s no stakes.

But but but, if you hit something a few times you have to start over?

Yeah which means it might as well be a cut scene.

Especially with how badly the person you're chasing is animated to where you can see the literal line the devs drew out for it to follow.

Was not a fan of the chases and races in Spiderman - same dev. They seem to love em

21

u/Im-on-a-banana-phone 18d ago

Spider-Man kinda made sense as a big focus was utilizing the very unique and well done traversal mechanics.

I mean wouldn’t it be a little disappointing if you had the iconic and extremely well-done web swinging mechanic and all you used it for was going from mission to mission?

As for here, this chase sequence was like 15 seconds and lead to a fight…. Idk why people are getting so worked up about it.

You already know its scripted to keep you a set distance from them at all times so you cant actually catch them.

All I ever feel during these is "is it over yet?"

I thought that was his senses. If it's just a handhold thing then that's dumb

67

u/That_on1_guy 18d ago

I think its hand holding but using his senses as a coat of paint to make it feel more natural

Like yea, what we're seeing in that red streak is probably a visual representation of the scent that is being left behind that logan is smelling, but its being used as a way to hold your hand incase you lose sight of the guy in red running 10 feet in front of you through what is essentially a 1 way hallway

22

u/Stephen2014 18d ago

Wolverine smell, Witcher sense, crafting view. It's all the same shit design that wore out its welcome 10 years ago.

Also, gotta slow down the chase sequence or players might get overwhelmed. Funny how wolverine jumps like he's on the moon but his sprint is the speed of a casual jog.

54

u/zeppelinism 19d ago

I think its supposed to represent his tracking ability as he has heightened senses like smell, but i get your criticism. A lot of games like to hold your hand with these scenarios.

23

u/JELLOvsPUDDIN 19d ago

I love how the scent trail almost looks like it's ahead of the guy running, like his stench is in front of him. So stupid

15

u/Guilty_Ship_6799 19d ago

his stench would be in front of him. It is still stupid looking though.

8

u/Sirromnad 19d ago

Developers have constantly stated that the red line and things like it are necessary because believe it or not there are MANY people who would 100% get lost, and then get frustrated.

Option to turn it off is the best of both worlds though.

Spoonfeeding the fucking game

3

u/-FalseProfessor- 19d ago edited 19d ago

I think it is meant to represent the scent trail of whoever he is chasing. It’s a narratively motivated mechanic.

It makes sense for him to be able to track runners once they are out of sight.

Ratchet chasing Alister in 2009 is miles better than this

8

u/Elcalibur_ 18d ago

goat reference.

3

u/Tigerwarrior55 18d ago

It helps that the level itself for thr Alistar chase is the yellow paint so you naturally follow him because the level design isn't that ambiguous on where to go.

u/Potato-baby 18d ago

Honestly the 2009 Wolverine game on Xbox 360/PS3 was kind of sick, I remember thinking the real time damage you see on his body and the regeneration of it was really cool. I feel like I haven’t seen a game that has really taken advantage of that kind of stuff, but I’ve always thought realistic looking wounds on where you’ve actually been hit in game as such a cool mechanic, I remember being amazed when it was done in Syphon Filter on PS1.

4

u/Dagigai 18d ago

My thoughts exactly. Looks like Assassin's Creed 1.

28

u/Zombii_Man 19d ago

AC1 at least has engaging movement mechanics lol.

26

u/KGB_Panda 18d ago

Also, weren't they actual chase sequences, like if you played well you could catch them early, and if you suck you fail? This chase sequence is just a walking simulator

13

u/Zombii_Man 18d ago

Yep! There's hella videos of dudes planning different, more efficient routes and stuff.

Like this dude goes in the opposite direction in order to cut the chase target off and catch him in under a minute. Great stuff.

The game may not look as pretty as modern games do, but it was designed to be rewarding for players who met the game where it was coming from and engaged with all systems.

Systems driven gameplay is one of those things I'm beginning to miss in these big AAA productions...

557

u/OverloadedSofa 19d ago

I mean, it’s also playstation only. Can’t say I’ll ever get it now

225

u/controldekinai 19d ago

So lame. I thought we were in a good spot once they started allowing PC release. Personally I'm way more upset about this vs the all-digital future they're selling.

92

u/Sloth_Monk 19d ago

New leadership at Sony is the reason for the change.

78

u/Exile688 19d ago

Amazingly short period between Sony claiming the console war victory and Sony panicking about Steam/Microsoft with no more PC ports and diving head first into digital only.

Like damn, the PSN/Helldivers 2/Steam delisting fiasco must have really upset Sony.

40

u/Atomic_Revival 18d ago

Which is hilarious because Helldivers 2 is one of the few times in gaming a studios incompetence actually made the game better.

The whole account linking thing was supposed to be mandatory day one. But because Arrowhead was struggling to work out bugs and the game had really terrible server issues starting out they were told to implement a bypass so Steam users could play. Their initial struggles are actually one of reason the game took off because the bypass allowed anyone and everyone access. If it stayed required? Nobody would have gave that game a chance on PC.

Meanwhile Sony knew all this. They knew the servers were messed up and Sony knew Arrowhead was struggling to fix things. They knew the game was benefiting from being able to be purchased in places PSN didn't exist. And yet there response was? Remove the bypass and force it on everyone!

Like that's tremendous big brain time right there.

13

u/Exile688 18d ago

It's hilarious to me because Helldivers 2 was one of the few gems in Sony's Concord/Marathon era and they still fucked Helldivers 2 with the PSN requirement.

9

u/Sp00py-Mulder 18d ago

Having seen Sony's attempts at movies and the executive leaks from before the pandemic...I genuinely just think the Sony leadership are stupid. Like, notable in any industry stupid.

3

u/Karkava 18d ago

They are stupid. Really stupid indeed. Even when they get lucky, they're still dumb enough to go back into the hole they just climbed out of.

15

u/controldekinai 19d ago

You mean price? That doesn't matter to me much, but I'm not going to buy a console to play its exclusives. If I want a game I dont mind paying full price. They can keep their game discounts. Better for customers to make them available. But they dont care about the customers, obviously

Why do AAA games all look the same?

31

u/xdoble7x 19d ago

Because the copy the formula that worked on the precious games that were successfull, after a few generations they all look the same

AAA games are just money investments, put XXX millions to copy the thing that made XXXX millions last time

11

u/HeldnarRommar 18d ago

Because they have to follow the formula so that the lowest common denominator of gamers can understand and follow the gameplay

u/ArvoNieR 18d ago

Most games these days don’t even make you start over if you get too far away from the person you’re chasing. Instead it’ll just automatically put up bumpers and give you a speed boost to catch up to em

3

u/Preeng 18d ago

That's not fair. Some games have the bad guy slow down for you a bit to give you a chance and if you somehow catch up to them they speed up.

Anyone else think this running animation looks janky? He looks heavy, slow.

89

u/Coffeypot0904 19d ago edited 18d ago

I think the biggest issue is that the shifts between the different animations looks really clunky for a next gen game.

33

u/liphttam1 18d ago

When he comes off the zipline he loses all forward momentum for a moment. Looks weird.

8

u/Ethanbrocks 18d ago

This just seems to be an Insomniac problem in general. The Spider-Man games have lots of momentum-retention issues and I hope they fix it for SM3

u/Far-Try5352 19d ago

But wolverine is supposed to be very fast

65

u/RenderedCreed 19d ago edited 19d ago

Always seemingly a tough choice for anyone adapting wolverine. He weighs something like 300 lbs. Balancing realism with comic book logic seems to be something they all struggle with regarding wolverine.

89

u/DatDiemDam 19d ago

just make him run fast and fall heavy, that will do.

54

u/Kneecap_Blaster 19d ago edited 18d ago

With the first gameplay trailer highlighting the "stealth" elements, of Wolverine crouching in a bright yellow suit walking silently on a corrugated metal roof up to an enemy in broad daylight, it's probably too late to turn back. That's probably a 3rd of the gameplay lol

6

u/SerowiWantsToInvest 18d ago

Then why can he leap 6 foot in the air but jogs like an unenhanced human

10

u/alex11chr 19d ago

Yes! Moved almost like the Hulk in Marvels Avengers

16

u/rondo_martin 19d ago

5

It does. I was thinking why does he run like that?

3

u/RecklessHusky 19d ago

Yeah. I get that he’s supposed to have weight, but It’s like his body movements are too slow to match the running speed, looks a little floaty.

7

u/ValkyrianRabecca 19d ago

Yeah if Wolverine was chasing someone that he needed dead or captured, I would expect his all fours running

because insomniac is behind it, and they have a pretty great track record with the Spiderman games, Im still somewhat open minded. But this clip alone looks terrible. I actually struggle to find something to compliment about it. Movement looks really stiff, guy ahead looks completely artificial and lifeless how they move, the graphics are super generic. And why are we still doing pointless chase sequences, is there really nothing else that devs can come up with? The fact they thought this would have been good promo material is very concerning.

But again insomniac has made some great games, so it's not like they dont know what they are doing. But damn.

I know this is subjective but this just does not look good or entertaining to me.

I recently heard most Sony games as cinematic action games and that really is true…and I don’t like it.

251

u/ma1butters 19d ago

Yep. Looks like something that's gonna make you start over if you're 25 feet behind him instead of 20 but then magically speed up if you get too close.

96

u/morsomme 19d ago

And the chase sequence is basically hard coded to last a certain time, so it's a running simulator

53

u/ma1butters 19d ago

Yeah. Might as well be another cutscene.

35

u/Dry_Departure_7813 19d ago

I always think, if the devs are so keen on me doing it "this specific way" why don't THEY just play the sodding game

11

u/karai-amai 19d ago

If you had the ability to flex your movement skills, maybe speccing into my different skills to transverse the world, and using the kit you built to solve the problem at hand.

This is just a lazy quick time event

Fair. I do think the game looks fun overall, but this is definitely a bad clip to suggest that. Agreed, feels too slow, no interesting flow in the movement like in the Spiderman games for example, Wolverine normally can wall jump and traverse on sides to pick up a distance when needed. Here he is just boringly running.

Your right this does not look good.

Not because it's cinematic action game.

But nothing in this scene makes it feel special. If you told me this was spider man with a Wolverine skin I would believe you.

They should have made Wolverine more of linear game in tight quarters or something to increase action and verocity. The open space and slow speed of Wolverine makes this look like a bore to play.

7

u/Paul_the_sparky 19d ago

The traversal in Spider-Man was fun though. Swinging through the city tailing an escaping car beats the on rails plodding on show here

Are we finally allowed to say this out loud? Everyone acts like Sony exclusives blow the Xbox out of the water and only idiots would buy an Xbox, but yet I can't seem to actually finish any of them.

Except ratchet and clank, I played through that twice.

3

u/Hour_Option_2439 19d ago

New Ratchet & Clank is good, but even that series has been watered down since the PS2 and PS3 games. Yes the graphics are better and the gameplay is tighter etc. but the stories in those games used to be genuinely interesting with unique satirical dialogue, now it's just the most sanitised quippy writing in all "kid's" media. The music used to be this electro-future-funk fusion, felt tailor made for the game with each planet having it's own sound, now they just have big orchestral scores. Shit even the UI lacks the originality of the older games

Video game companies have gotten so lazy with their wand-wavey "zipline" mechanics.

In Assassin's Creed (not implying that they started the zipline trope, just a notable example), you had to have a special hook for your blade in order to zipline. Nowadays it just seems like whatever the character is holding is adequate to be used to zipline across a map.

9

u/SevroAuShitTalker 18d ago

One of my favorite things in Deadlock (the valve moba) is that each character rides the zipline a but different to better fit the character model/style

AC Revelations: Hookblade

AC 3: Tomahawk

AC: Liberation: Whip swiming in lieu of zipline

AC Syndicate: Rope Launcher in Gauntlet

AC: Origins: Bayek uses his bare fucking hands

AC Odyssey: The Spear of Leonidas

AC Valhalla: A small axe handle, same animation as the Spear of Leonidas

AC Mirage: Basim uses his hands

AC Shadows: A grapple hook is used, similar to the Rope Launcher

AC Black Flag Resynced: Edward uses a random piece of rope

Assassin's Creed ziplines were trash ever since AC 3, but by Origins they totally gave up on even making it an interesting mechanic. For a game series defined by parkour, it is a massive shame they refused to iterate further on ziplines or even standard rope swings.

They were actually going to bring the Hookblade back for AC Black Flag, but they ended up scrapping the hook and ziplines caus they felt it was cartoonishly pirate like. Like come on Darby, the game is already nothing but pirate stereotypes!

In fact, the last the the Hookblade was even mentioned was in the novelization of the Assassin's Creed 2016 movie. Rip the Hookblade.

You see... The hook and the blade...

5

u/DonkeyGuy 18d ago

The true peak was when we had giant implausibly designed grindrails that bridges the gap between map segments.

3

u/Han-dem 18d ago

To be fair, Insomniac had already used ziplines on Ratchet and Clank where Ratchet had to use his wrench to traverse them, back in 2002

3

u/Airmoni 18d ago

In AC Origins, Bayek uses his bare hands for the zipline... They didn't even blther to put a rope between his hands...

38

They literally showed fighting and stealth gameplay, this is what THIS Redditor chose to post.

This is 10% of the showcase

37

u/LeaveMeBeWillYa 18d ago

Judging by the comments here, OP posting the chase part rather than the actual gameplay and your downvote, I'd say this sub has an agenda to make this game look bad.

Don't know why but it's rather sad to see bitching about a game looking bad when they are reacting to a single clip of a part that isn't the major focus of the game

24

u/DiggityDog6 18d ago

Yeah these comments are ridiculously judgmental for what amounts to 10% of the gameplay and probably one single mission in the entire game. Especially considering OP chose to cut off the video the moment that any combat popped up.

The rest of the showcase was also painfully generic and boring. Combat is a mashing and dodge simulator. Giant boss fight straight from the 90s. Clunky movement. No creativity or innovation. This game doesn’t look interesting

I just want to point out that the red line is clearly meant to be a scent trail mechanic that fades as the target gets farther away. It makes sense as a thing for Wolverine to have.

I’m probably going to get really hated on, but the content I’ve seen for this game in general doesn’t honestly look that entertaining to me, especially when compared to the Spider-Man games. But yeah, this video in particular doesn’t look that great and I’m really not trying to stir up anything. I love insomniac.

13

u/Hydra_Kitt 19d ago

I feel you. I think its because Wolverine as a character is more fun to watch than to play because of his ability set. A movie or comic can fast forward traversal but in a game he doesnt really have movement like that. Whereas Spider-Man is ALL traversal.

9

u/Johncurtisreeve 19d ago

That’s honestly exactly how I feel when I first heard it was announced. My first thought was what are they going to do with him? There’s considerably less concepts they can do with him then with Spider-Man in terms of gameplay.

4

u/pleasedtoheatyou 18d ago

Same. There's a reason developers keep going back to the well of Batman and Spider-Man for games, beyond their obvious popularity, whilst characters like Superman, Iron Man, Wolverine have seen far less success.

Ultimately they offer a lot of fun different ways to move about maps as well as fight and unlockable abilities, but with clear limits that don't make things trivial or mean you have to implement non-sensical boundaries.

3

u/Hydra_Kitt 19d ago

Right! I know Wolverine has animalistic tendencies in the comics but he still has no traversal and his personal villains aren't really that interesting.

3

u/Johncurtisreeve 19d ago

So like for real when that first trailer was shown off, all I could think was, I feel like they’re using the gore as the selling point and the distraction because when I actually sat down and just thought about the gameplay itself, I realize the only thing that sparked my interest was the Gore and realized that the gameplay wasn’t really anything too spectacular in my opinion

9

u/Nova225 19d ago

So far the only impressive thing they've shown is the gore mechanics

9

u/SilverKry 19d ago

Which if you played the old Wolverine Origins movie game game on PS3 or 360 it's nothing new at all.

You think you will get hated on for hating something popular on Reddit? Lmao

10

u/pratzc07 19d ago

I don't think you will get hated on the more I see the more drab, boring, uninspired and wait for deep sale this game is turning out to be especially for a stacked out September with Onimusha and other titles hitting around the same time.

Not going lie this doesn’t look that impressive, even the dedicated gameplay segment we had a few months back looked just okay. Sony games are really just starting to look and play all the same…

You're telling me you don't like massive stepdown from a 9 year old Spider-Man game from the same company, millions of dollars in profit later?

And you call yourself a gamer.

Meh. Scripted sequence. Spiderman had those too obviously but one of the draws of those games was that the traversal was largely up to the player to figure out and perfect.

4

u/VukKiller 18d ago

I absolutely despise chase objectives where the guy is programed to just be at an unreachable distance so you can trigger a cutscene near the end and never actually catch him.

18

u/JaronJ10 19d ago

Looks like a game I won’t be playing

6

u/Low_Boot_1426 18d ago

The red line trailing behind the guy so players don’t get lost and confused is killing me lol

Do we really need a bright red illuminated line when he's right f****** in front of you do we really need that kind of hand holding

12

u/throwaway4days484848 19d ago

This entire game is going to be one big hand hold, everything looks so easy and scripted.

12

Eh, this actually does look kinda bad tho. The rest of the game could be perfect and I’d still say this chasing sequence is odd lol

5

u/DiggityDog6 18d ago

Cool but people are acting like this is the entire game. A mission that most likely constitutes 1% of what you’ll be doing in the course of this game = garbage running simulator slop in these people’s minds. It’s actually ridiculous.
