Cool I created a site that brings in local government data
I created yourlocalwatch.com for a universal location of factual sources to find out what’s going on with your town/city.
It’s a work in progress and I’m adding new towns everyday.

NJ Eats I've never seen it called this in the wild before
Spotted this in my supermarket and it prompted me to post and ask exactly what part of NJ they call tomato sauce "gravy". You'd be helping me with a long time question about my state, because for my whole life I've pretty much just thought this was a Sopranos thing. I have never until this day seen or heard "gravy" uttered by anyone who wasn't about to whack a rat.
Does anyone actually say this? What part of Jersey are they doing this?

Advice What is Springfield, NJ like?
Right now I live in North Bergen, NJ. I like my area but my home has no garage so parking is a nightmare. Besides that I love the area I live in. My parents bought maybe 40 years ago because they said it was close to Manhattan. The homes there look affordable (800k is my max). I'd prefer Summit because of the downtown area, but 800k in Summit is a unicorn. Springfield is right there! Can anyone tell me more about Springfield? Thanks in advance!

Central Jersey Ren Faire meetup
Hey r/newjersey,
My (M) fiancee (F) and I are interested in going to the PA Ren Faire on a Saturday or Sunday this September and we’d love if we could meet some new friends to go with us. We’re 34ish and not originally from NJ, so we’re looking to meet some new friends in our age range and to maybe hang out in central Jersey as well. We went last year and had fun but we want to meet more people who like that kind of thing so I hope that’s you! We’re also wanting to learn DnD if any of you are interested in that. Send a message if you’re interested!

Interesting 4 Bobcats sighted in Tewksbury - Hunterdon
Caught these guys moving through the field behind my house this evening. Looks like an adult with a few kittens/juveniles in tow. The pictures are pretty distant and zoomed so it's grainy, but you can make out the ears and coloring pretty clearly. (yes, my camera is a potato)
Bobcats are still listed as a NJ state endangered species and sightings are rare, mostly reported in the northwest part of the state, so this felt like a cool one to share.

Advice Looking for software dev peer groups or coworking tips in JC/North Jersey
I work from home and sometimes it is really monotonous being stuck in the house all day. I still love the remote setup overall, but I have been looking for ways to get out and occasionally meet other software professionals. I have tried a few co-working spaces once or twice a month, but some cost $50+ per day and you do not even get an external monitor, which makes coding on a single laptop screen tough. I have also checked out local meetups in the city, but most rooms are overwhelmingly crowded with people just trying to find jobs. If anyone knows of North Jersey or Jersey City spots with better hardware setups, or smaller tech hangouts that focus more on building and less on networking, I would love to hear about them.

Advice Freehold vs. Matawan/Aberdeen. Making a moving decision.
My fiancé and I are having to move to Monmouth County. We’ve narrowed our search down to two options: a rental in Freehold around the Harding Road area and one in Aberdeen around South Atlantic Avenue/Route 34. Rents are close enough that location and quality of life could be the deciding factor.
I wanted to specify the areas since of course “Freehold” and “Matawan/Aberdeen” cover different neighborhoods.
For context: I work in Howell. Sometimes, I’ll work in the Manalapan/Marlboro area. My fiancé works in Highland Park.
For anyone who lives in either area, or has lived in both: How do you feel about the immediate neighborhoods I mentioned?
I’d love to know any advice you guys can share. Does either area feel like there’s more to do nearby versus having to drive elsewhere for everything. Are there any location-specific drawbacks that someone touring an apartment might miss? (road noise, flooding, difficult intersections, etc.?) If you were choosing between these two areas as a couple in your 20s, which would you pick and why? How frustrating is local traffic for normal errands and commuting toward the towns I mentioned.
I know both towns are generally considered decent places to live, so I’m especially interested in the smaller quality-of-life differences that might not be obvious from touring an apartment or driving through once.

Advice House hunting out of reach in Metuchen
We have looking for more than 1 year, but recently we saw a house in Metuchen that has 2 bedrooms on the first floor,.no HVAC, illegal kitchen in the basement for $700K. House listing says 4 bedrooms, but of which 2 bedrooms are in the basement with no closets, so is it norm to inflate bedroom counts ??? Has anybody else experienced this in Metuchen?

Fail Nothing says being proud of one's history than slapping AI slop on it.
If you can't tell, this is at Quakerbridge Mall. This was on a wall where people can display post-it notes from the decades the mall's been around (1970's-present). It's so painfully dumb and pathetic using AI for this, but there's NO effort hiding the lack of quality control.

Advice Does anyone know of a trustworthy employment lawyer?
I was sketchily terminated from my job, I have a lot of details that I will not share here but I’m seeking an attorney for general guidance. I have already filed an unemployment claim, and am waiting on approval/denial but upon sharing details with others, was advised over and over again to contact an attorney. I’ve never had to contact one before so I’m totally lost and at square one. From what I understand some do free consults.
I’ve already searched online, but it’s hard to tell what’s legit and all that. Im mainly asking here because I have always found that people who actually know people yields the best result. (“I know a guy!”)
Thank you for any recs.

😡 THIS IS AN OUTRAGE This new straw ban is so fucking stupid
Actually a ban would be an improvement, at least it would be an actual change instead of just relocating them to a place that inconveniences everyone involved.

Buncha savages Jury duty
I was summoned to jury duty for the first time this week and every day this week, so far, I haven’t had to report.
Everyone else I know has either 1. had to go or 2. Didn’t have to go.
So why is the county texting every day saying I don’t have to report tomorrow but I might have to report later this week? Is that for a different type of trial?

Advice What Local NJ Cases Should More People Know About?
Hi New Jersey! We’re Crime in America, a journalist-led true crime podcast focused on bringing more attention to local cases and the people affected by them. We are interested in hearing about cases that may not have received much attention outside of their local communities.
Are there any local cases from New Jersey that you think deserve more attention or haven't gotten the coverage they deserve? We'd love to hear what people in the community think is worth taking a closer look at.

Advice Car storage for 2 months?
Traveling out of state from mid September through mid November and am looking for somewhere to park/store my car during that time for a relatively low cost. Looking for anywhere between Newark and New Brunswick— if anyone has leads/suggestions I would appreciate it.
